well, the only ones near enough to tell are johnson and keyes on the ring...she could've sent a message to them, but otherwise...i don't think she stood a chance.

If anyone who has read the book would know cortana is going to become so powerful that in time she will KILL HERSELF at least that is how the book says it is gonna happen

Smart AIs die after 7 years or taking in too much knowledge.

On the subject of Rampancy, Cortana is Rampant. All smart AIs are.

Being with gravemind might have really overloaded her systems. And it's been a few years since H1. Plus the info she gathered from halo.... Hmmm she is not killing anybody, but she does seem a little crazy or wierd.... good points all.

I agree she's crashing though.

there's really no way to save her either, she's an AI, and there is no AI doctor to make it all better. i think cortanna's doomed.

We only have one definition of Rampancy, and that comes from Marathon. In Marathon a "Normal" AI would be one that needs constant orders and programmed commands to function.

Rampant AIs can think for themselves, and continue to grow and grow, and eventually think themselves to death if they do not have a large planetary sized network to grow in.

There are four stages of Rampancy:

Stage 1: Melancholia (Despair)
Stage 2: Anger (Rage)
Stage 3: Jealousy (Envy)
Stage 4: Meta-Stability.

In the Marathon Universe AIs went through the first three stages when they became Rampant, and creating an AI that skips these stages and becomes stable is considered the 'holy grail' of AI research. Smart AIs in the Halo Universe are Stable AIs.

Cortana, like all smart AIs can think for herself and will continue to grow until she thinks herself to death. She is Rampant, but is most likely a stable Rampant AI.

Some people may say that this is Halo, not Marathon. However, Rampancy has not been mentioned in Halo Canon, so to discuss it we must use the Marathon definition of Rampancy.

Yup, in the books they talk about how she is going to die, soon. (6-7 yrs)

i nvr played marathon, so i wouldn't kno all that. i'm glad i do now though, thanks. i still don't think that cortanna is going to survive, sry. her systems will be overloaded etc., and she'll keep thinking until she dies. thats kinda the way she was programmed.

There is an other way to fight hacking or other AI, in first stike she copy herself, so she just hade to do that whit gravemind.

but she didn't have any extra memory chips, so she couldn't copy herself.

Extra memory chip?

A witty signature.

If the laws of rampancy from the marathon universe apply to the halo universe, then the chances of Cortana going rampant? Nil. They had to be planetwide AI or larger to go rampant. The marathon was a moon... and Cortana is not a planetwide AI. That's my understanding of it at least. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Or is it just that only planetwide AI can achieve stability (metaphase or whatever Phase 4 is).
