Marathon = amazing. Knowing the story or marathon will seriously give you some great insight into the halo universe. Oh, and, did I mention that marathon is a fantastic game?

<File 1 of 1940237>
"It is a side effect of Rampancy that AIs generally become
more aggressive and more difficult to affect by subterfuge.
Thus, actually disassembling a Rampant AI is quite dangerous.
This was evident in the Crash of Traxus IV in 2206. By the
time that the Rampancy of Traxus was detected, he had already
infiltrated five of the other AIs on the Martian Net. The
only recourse for the Martians was to shut down the Martian
Planetary Net. Even then, it took two full years to
completely root out the damage that Traxus had done, and the
repercussions of the Crash were seen for over ten years after
his Rampancy had begun.
***
Rampancy has been divided into three distinct stages. Each
stage can take a different amount of time to develop, but the
end result is a steady progression towards greater
intellectual activity and an acceleration of destructive
impulses. It is not clear whether these impulses are due to
the growth of the AI's psyche, or simply a side effect of the
new intellectual activity.
***
<section abbreviated>
The three stages were diagnosed shortly after the first
Rampancies were discovered on Earth in the latter part of the
twenty first century. The stages are titled after the primary
emotional bent of the AI during each stage. They are
Melancholia, Anger, and Jealousy.
***
In general, Rampancy is accelerated by outside stimuli. This
was discovered early in Cybertonics. The more a Rampant AI is
harassed or threatened, the more rapidly it becomes dangerous.
Thus, most Rampants are dealt with in one mighty attack, in
order to deny the AI time to grow or recover. There have been
a few examples of this tactic not succeeding. In all of these
cases, the Rampant was never brought under control. Traxus IV
is the most notable example. He was finally dealt with by a
complete shutdown of his host net.
***
Theoretically, testing Rampancy should be easily accomplished
in the laboratory, but in fact it has never successfully been
attempted. The confinement of the laboratory makes it
impossible for the developing Rampant AI to survive. As the
growing recursive programs expand with exponential vivacity,
any limitation negatively hampers growth. Since Rampant AIs
need a planetary sized network of computers in order to grow,
it is not feasible to expect anyone to sacrifice a world-web
just to test a theory.
***
In the two hundred and fifty years since Rampancy first
appeared in the Earth-net, the stable Rampant AI, the 'Holy
Grail' of cybertonics, has never come close to fruition.
Since no Rampant has ever been controlled or turned to any
useful purpose, it is the opinion of this writer and of the
majority of the Cybertonic community that all rampant AIs are
a danger to Cyberlife, Liberty, and the Pursuit of
Thrashedness. (James B. Miller, 2320, "Life and Death of
Intelligence")

If Cortana does go rampant, or crazy as i understand it, is there a possibility that Chief will have to destroy her in order to keep her from doing somthing terrible? That would make for a good storyline and box-office movie...

Wait wait wait. Fall of the Reach the first book in the Halo series, so that wouldn't make sense considering that that was abut 20 years ago. Plus her life expectancy wasn't really being accurate. They were count all 'problems' or glitches that she could experience that might lower her time of sorts.

Ok sorry to go a bit off topic but don't you think that Bungie should consider having some more cutscenes or flashbacks on Chiefs training/childhood. I mean really, It just seems that they cover up his ENTIRE PAST except for Cortana. Explain that... X_X

I'm blue da ba di da ba dai!

Well cortana is based on a real person that person is not on earth but is helping somehow.

in the trailer, she states she has defied gods and demons, and says it confidently. What if she is stating she has defied flood and covenant alike? What if she has beaten gravemind? Besides, this would open up more opportunities for the game.

Also, there was what is believed to be a forunner AI aboard that ship, and even if there isnt there is still the moniters for each instillation. Now they are obviously some kind of AI and have lived for several thousand years, what if Cortana had found out how the forunners kept them alive and is learning from it?

No GS is a dumb AI he cant think for himself always folowing protocal and all, so he cant go rampant or can dumb AI also become rampant?

all good points, yes. but how could she defeat Gravemind, she's an AI with no defences at her disposal. i don't think she could have survived an assault by Gravemind.

but on the other hand, Gravemind is not an AI (as far as we kno), so how could he hack an AI? all he could do is question it until it just falls apart.

  • 06.28.2006 10:23 AM PDT

I'm blue da ba di da ba dai!

Well if she is an AI she knows how to not get hack right?

i think ANY computer or AI can be hacked with the proper amount of time.

Ya, but would hacking her get her rampant maybe he controls her but she is not rampant.

The art to good shooting lies in the ability to aim at where your opponent isn't, and miss.

Gravemind can obviously hack into computers, because he/she/it did it to Delta Halos teleportation systems.
Cortana would most likely be very difficult to hack as she has already been inside a Halo and gained vast amounts of knowledge. She is also designed to hack systems, so she would also know how to avoid being hacked.
In the third Halo novel, Cortana is sluggish because of the vast amounts of data from Halo and 'possibly' permanently shortened her life. In this book it shows that if she was to dump the data she would free herself from being sluggish, but she decided to wait to get back to Earth to dump it, to avoid risk of the covenant getting it.
Also, she can't be that old because she is almost new when Reach is glassed and what happened on the first Halo only took a week. It also only took a few days to get back to Earth where Cortana could dump the data.

I assume that the time difference between Halo 1 and Halo 2 is not long as MC and Sarge are only just recieveing their medals.

So Cortana can't be coming to the end of her life (assuming there is little time difference between Halo 2 and 3) and Gravemind would have trouble gaining full control over Cortana.
So, I don't think she is going rampant. I think that the message in the trailer is code that MC will understand.

Take time to read my ramblings please, they kind of make sense. :P

  • 06.28.2006 10:52 AM PDT

I'm blue da ba di da ba dai!

You think that MC is reiceving a message from cortana thats impossible there to far away.

  • 06.28.2006 10:55 AM PDT

The art to good shooting lies in the ability to aim at where your opponent isn't, and miss.

why is it impossible? Its set far into the future, Cortana has all the technology of Delta Halo to play with and the message is all distorted.

  • 06.28.2006 11:10 AM PDT

A witty signature.

Receiving far away messages is impossible, but going faster than the speed of light, fighting an unknown enemy on 'Halo' structures, colonizing planets, the fact that MC can snipe standing... none of that bothers you?

Hmm....
