It is callled......(5 minutes of digging through the halo books later)...................hmm, well I guess it doesn't have a name, but at the end of The Fall of Reach, they call it a gas giant if that helps at all.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't see the other posts.

The large Gas Giant is Threshold, it's moon is Basis. A couple Singleplayer levels take place in a Forerunner structure on Threshold. Colossus, a Multiplayer map, has a similar setting on Threshold. Also, Burial Mounds takes place on Basis.

The Halo 1 manual says the AR's integrated compass points toward the gas giant, Threshold. I don't know where I heard this, but I think Basis is one of Threshold's moons, or the only one.

Does anyone know who exactly named these planets? Keyes maybe?

Threshold, the planet next to the first halo and the planet that the Heretic Space Station in Halo 2 orbits.

I am...whimsical today.

An uncharted system...with named planets?

Alpha Halo occupies the Lagrangian point between the two bodies if that helps :)

When I read this I thought you were asking about the Planet that Delta Halo is close to, and then realized that I didn't know. Does anyone else?

And the Library or The Maw would have been better forums to put this in.

actually that isnt completely right

Cortana had a rough idea where they were going. She picked up the coordinates off a rock that Hunters were placing in a particle beam. Technically it was a non-definate jump, but it wasnt COMPLETELY random

You should of made up your own instrument. You could have named it the PolarLighting -a-phone. People would buy it and they would all be like "Awh, He's so cool for inventing the PolarLighting-a-phone."

Well, we've established that the name of the gas giant is Threshold, and the moon is Basis, what about the planet the Delta Halo is near?
