(Evidence Provided Below, courtesy of My God, It's Full of Stars, and Waiting for Destiny)
It's a bit of reading, but it's broken into theory and evidence.
The year is 2734 (total guess).
Humanity had spread to the stars, become a galactic society, but in 2500 (total guess) an alien race decimated them. Scouring their Solar Systems for resources, wiping out humanity's advanced technology and moving on. Earth was not spared.
Before Earth was attacked, humanity hid much of their technology from the invaders. One such item was the colony-class ship Per Audacia ad Astra (It means "By Daring, to the Stars") hidden in the Phillipines.
200 years after the destruction of Earth's major infrastructure. Humanity has rebuilt.
(Names used below are placeholder, based on Waiting for Destiny's guesses. Locations are also pure guesses).
A faction calling itself New Monarchy has formed in what was Australia.
A theocratic faction calling itself Osiris has formed in India, heavily influenced by refugees from Africa.
A faction named Dead Orbit(I certainly hope not, but it's what we've got so far based on Bungie's purchased websites), is formed by the remnants of Earth's government located in California.
The antagonist, the FWC or Future War Cult, has existed since the fall of Earth. It is a cult-like nation pledged stop at nothing to rebuild humanity and eradicate the aliens that reduced humanity to ashes.
The Seven Seraphs, an elite caste of warriors from the FWC. The best of the best, as it were. (Not really sure how to fit the Seven Seraphs in, I'd appreciate ideas).
The FWC has recovered data indicating the existence and general location of the Per Audacia ad Astra: The Philippines. Their activity in the region has alerted New Monarchy, Osiris, and Dead Orbit. Enough technology has been recovered to allow for advanced land, air and sea travel, even orbital space flight, but Faster Than Light Technology has been lost. The FWC knows it could obtain the resources it needs and conquer the new nations of Earth if it could get this tech, which it believes can be found in the Audacia.
The other factions aren't aware of the exact intentions of the FWC, but they know something's up and each sends a substantial military force to set up base in the Philippines, figure out what the FWC is up to and stop them.
Method of story-telling: What I've proposed presents a difficult problem to story telling. How can you design a campaign around three factions (assuming the player can pick one of three)? The answer: the campaign for each faction will be fairly similar, but how the characters in each faction react, and how the other factions themselves react to new developments (i.e., Osiris and New Monarchy ally after learning Dead Orbit has obtained valuable intel on Audacia's whereabouts) will change. Resulting in different cutscenes and great replayablity.
Random:
Imagine this scene where unknown actor hands Jen Taylor something and she looks up at it, and imagine her saying, "My God, it's full of stars." as she examines it.
That's my theory, what's yours? Read on for evidence (my above idea is based on a lot of conjecture, but not without reason).
The Beginning
The Destiny Map
This thread has identified the Earth location of the infamous Destiny map as Puerto Princesa located in... the Phillipines?
Due to the frequent use of the map (Bungie flaunts it like Marty flaunts his air-violin), I'm assuming that it is where we will be playing. This assumption is somewhat justified by this screenshot showing a large scale area of land being created, indicating a large investment into world development.
The Phillipines isn't exactly a go to spot for an epic video game, so that brings us to the question, how did it come to be the epicenter of so much (hopefully) carnage?
That question is answered by windmills. Look at what's coming off those windmills: power lines. Now, those are are a far cry away from Reach's futuristic wind-mills things, and in other screens, you see a ruined structure. Using cruddy windmills to power something? Ruined fancy looking stuff? One conclusion: Post-Apocalyptica.
Rising Action
Per Audacia ad Astra: By Daring to the Stars.
Registered New Logo: Be Brave.
Destiny Sigil: (Worn look supports Post-Apocalyptic theory) Resembles an "on" button.
This is the one fairly solid thing I've got. I was thinking, using a latin phrase is weird as a Game Logo (compare to Believe, Remember Reach, ect) and it's already taken by "See You Starside." and "Be Brave." So what could be it's point?
It's a great name for a ship. Why is a ship important? What brings people to the Philippines? What if the ship were in the Philippines? Why do people care about a ship in the Philippines? An apocalyptic event has put a premium on technology, particularly on FTL technology.
Finding the Audacia would be like pressing an "on" switch to explore the galaxy and retake it. Think Humans invading Aliens in Destiny 2.
Why Aliens? Well, my logic is fairly unsupported. Bungie. Sci-fi. Gotta have aliens.
