Rep systems, even ones that are only positive, are rife with abuse. This is such a cop-out response... explain to me exactly how a *like* button would be just totally abused.
People farming likes is the first and foremost challenge of a like system. People seeking approval from others and getting that like button clicked changes the nature of their posting. This would be akin to quoting a mod and brown nosing someone because of their text color. Fawning for social praise is not something that should be a pillar of an internet videogame forum. The quasi anonymous nature of our posting is what gives us a sense of honesty.
Secondly, this rewards people who use alts, or create circle of people liking eachother's posts. One of my first experiences with a rep system was on &totse. Many of the positive reps one would receive would come with the comment 'rep me back.' Eventually the rep system was taken off of the website because it wasn't accomplishing anything.
Finally, as others have stated in order to keep the thread alive you have to post in that thread. A like button may deny the post. The lack of post means the thread starts to die off, and also no longer gets the contribution that would otherwise go into the thread. If you agree with someone, quote them or the part of their post you agree with, add your own feedback, and actually help the conversation along. A like button does even less than quoting someone without adding anything, because in that case the thread at least gets a bump.
