I don't want bnet to turn into a "thumbs up if..." cluster. The system has more downsides than advantages.
me neither, but don't you think those threads wiould quickly be replaced by new ones? Threads in which members actually engage in some sort of a discussion, that is.

  • 10.21.2012 12:27 PM PDT

I've been here a decent amount of time to know you're all crazy

I feel as though it would be used in a wrong way. Now everyone only focuses on that particular comment, and unless it really does contribute to the thread or idea, could completely derail many threads wherein a discussion could have occurred.

1. Clearly that would be spam and be worthy of a ban. 2. People could just say "repost this post if...." now, and they don't. So you don't have a lot of evidence to back up your claim. And don't say YouTube or Facebook because they are structured in a fundamentally different way that gives way to posts/statuses/comments like that. 3. How can you say that "[it] has more downsides than advantages" when you've only named one downside that isn't even a legitimate claim?

What I would like to see is that members who post, rather than liking a post with a button, add something to the conversation or at least try to.

I would love to see this feature here, where people have the ability to like a post. That would make it much more enjoyable seeing that typical witty reply on the flood getting 50+ thumbs up.
I believe I have posted this before and almost everyone liked the idea. I don't see how it could harm the community, I think it would make it better. Then again, I am not in control of any websites or in any job related to PR.

What do you guys think?

Bungie is one of the few communities that doesn't have this feature, why are you bringing facebook up?

Well then, I believe you have your answer.
The like button is the same as that post.
No, I could see what you were trying to do a mile away when you asked about whether I thought the post was spam.

To clarify, the result of clicking a like/rate button is not the same as making a post. I do not believe you can easily compare them. Furthermore, because I was expecting this kind of reply, I made sure to include an extra point about useless posts clogging up the forum/post page. A like/rate button clearly does not do that (again, because it's not a post), but you didn't address this.

Well, if it is a good feature, there is no harm in implementing it.

Progo, Shrew, Chryso, all are the same.

No, it would ruin the point of arguing if a bunch of people just went around 'liking' stuff without bothering to jump in, there would be fewer posts, and if someone is clever in the way they phrase their argument they can get massive likes from people who don't understand what the poster is really saying.

Bottom line is - Like buttons add nothing to the discussion.
I had no intent to mislead you in any way. I was merely pointing out the fact that if anyone posted that '*like*, *dislike*' as a comment, it would be viewed as spam. Both, like/dislike posts and like buttons leave no real merit for a forum's purpose - to discuss.
That said, they would never aid in a thread's longevity, for no bump is attributed to the thread, same as a poll vote (which I feel is wrong, votes should bump threads).
Again, it is a thread / discussion killer.

Had we a like / dislike button in place, you and I would not have had this little stroll down what ifs lane now would we?

Your point, however true, is invalid and irrelevant.

The point of a Like button is to express mutual agreement or satisfaction in an inconspicuous manner, not to add to discussion.

Would you like to know what else a Like button doesn't do? Make cookies. Does that mean it shouldn't be implemented? Nope.

Also, Again, it is a thread / discussion killer.Proof? None? Cool. Thanks.

ctjl96 and I made a working script that allows users to like/dislike posts - and hey, it worked.

It never took off sadly; I'm sure you can find it in the script thread, somewhere.

There are a large number of elements of this forum you could similarly argue have no purpose. Avatars, timestamps, titles, usernames, quotes, etc... All of these are useless if the bottom line is simply to "discuss" (which I completely disagree with). In fact, why not get rid of the website altogether and go back to using Usenet? Serious question, by the way.

It doesn't seem to matter to you that all of these elements and features in some way enhance the usability of the site for members here. So what's so different about a like/rating feature existing?

I mentioned a way of being able to apply filters and sorting earlier in the thread. If such a feature were implemented to complement the like/rating button, that makes it infinitely more useful; I could look at the most highly rated posts within a topic, the most highly rated topics within a forum, etc... or do nothing at all!

When I grow up I want to be bitter and spiteful.

"i liked the reality where everything was on fire better"

daza if you only want to read the highest-rated posts then why are you a moderator whose responsibilities clearly require one to assess the lowest-rated of posts?

seems somewhat contradictory

First off I want to point out I see nowhere in the OP where he discusses the addition of a dislike button. Simply a "Like Button."

Obviously a dislike button will get abused and lower the interaction on the forums blah blah etc. A dislike button should never appear on here.

A like button on the other hand doesn't hurt anything. It can only help.

You get:

- Less chance the thread is going to be derailed.
- Less people complaining about stupid posts.
- Less pointless posts.
- Less off-topic posts.
- Less bumping.
- A method for the lurkers to contribute to the discussion by way of rating it.
- Cleaner forum.
- More exposure to the posts that are "good" and on-topic due to the pointless posts not being there to clog your view.

Looking at the bigger picture, you have the (possible) option(s) to:

- Sort by rating.
- Filter by rating.
- Have a better chance of finding a decent topic.

From here.

Lets get a like button already. Lets be able to do it on every individual post. I'm not saying when you like a post that it bumps to the top of the thread (or forum) so every thread has a witty response at the top. It's a forum so you should read through it all, discuss, and like any of the posts you agree with.

Implement it and lets see what truly happens.

LAWL it's funny because Facebook statuses are incomparable to BNet posts in both format and function.

Proof? Ok.
Look at a site like FB that obviously has this.
Your friend posts 'I ate a sandwich'.
/ typical FB post

To which you for some reason hit the 'Like' button.
Does the conversation continue after that moment?
No.

If that were to happen here all that anyone could comment on as discussion is 'Oh, so someone liked that'.
Again - discussion = dead.

There is your proof. Cool? You're welcome.

So I can not be both true and invalid / irrelevant.

Are we here to be inconspicuous? Lurkers maybe, and they don't post. They wouldn't 'Like' anything either.
Why? They're lurkers.
