I was the first Spartan. And I will be the last. Mythic on 9/1/2012 never forget
PAX 08, Third Team against Luke and Shishka, AR dual to
the Death, won by one point... Assembly hasn't changed.

urk: "This is a bad idea."
DeeJ: "Hold still..."

Not reading 5 pages to see if this was suggested yet:

How about...to like or dislike something...you have to post? You know...Gotta post to have the ability to like or dislike? Would also help provide better clarity to the message if it could of been taken sarcastic, but a like would suggest it wasn't.

And then anyone who just goes "like" to get a like could be banned....Because why not.

Intolerance is the highest level of stupidity and inbred thinking.

I'm with jyrine on this. I am not going to read all these posts because I can sum up the entire thread in one phrase: "BNET IS NOT FACEBOOK!!!!!!"

A +/- rep system is something I believe would strongly benefit Bungie.net. Yes, the system can be abused, but so can spoons. A system like this could very easily cut down on the "I agree" or "Good Post" posts. But that's my two cents. Heaven forbid we integrate a successful feature from a successful website.

I'm sorry. Maybe you heard me wrong. I said proof, not ways this feature works on a site that is not in any way set up like BNet.

Facebook is fundamentally not like BNet. "This isn't Facebook" is an argument that can actually be used when not done so ignorantly. True, both are mediums through which people can interact socially. True, in this hypothetical scenario both would have a like button.

Untrue, people utilize both of these mediums to socially interact in the same ways. Untrue, the like system would be utilized in the same way through both sites.

On Facebook, the Like is a legitimate form of communication. People like stuff all the time. This is why you typically see more likes on a picture, status, relationship change, etc. than you do comments. This is because Facebook is strictly about social interaction and, since the Like is the most basic form of social interaction besides the poke, it's the most utilized.

BNet is about discussion, and therefore the likelihood of the ratio of likes to posts becoming overwhelming in terms of the former is slim to none. The fact that you're using Facebook as an example of ways that the Like system would work on BNet is stupid. It's not relative. It's not relevant. It's not valid.

Proof? No? Cool. Thanks.

Nah I'd rather not.

You act as though you know it would be used differently.
You have no more proof of this than I can provide of my own assessment.
Giving people a like system does not mean they will ever utilize it in the way that you proclaim.
Why? People are stupid and lazy. If you believe that they will just magically change over night, well keep dreaming.

Social interaction by hitting 'Like'?
Please.

Proof? No? Cool. Hardly.

I can be just as condescending as you.

Join SIP today! We smell good. Promise.

It's like a gigantic snowball, rolling down a mountain, eating kids on the way.

I'm completely against this idea. Every forum/site that has this "feature" implemented that I've seen, is just a big "POST FOR DA KARMA/LIKEZ" mess. Without it, you have people who aren't just posting to get likes or thumbs up, and are actually thinking about they are saying.

The fact that you cannot recognize the fundamental difference between the setup and means of interaction of Facebook and BNet is fairly ridiculous. Posts on Facebook are one-offs and often don't promote discussion.

They're statuses. They're meant to express your current status. People like your current status to express a mutual sense of agreement, enjoyment, endearment, etc. Comments are additional ideas added to something which is already not meant to encourage discussion most of the time. Therefore liking the status is the most common and accepted way to communicate with that person via said status.

Forum threads on BNet are meant to encourage discussion. In fact, that is the basic requirement of each and every forum thread outside the Classifieds. Therefore they are much more likely to incite discussion even when a like option is presented.

My ideas and points are backed up by logical explanations. Yours extend as far as putting words in my mouth ("change over night", suggesting I even said a way in which people would be likely to use a like system, etc.), anecdotal "evidence"* ("People are stupid and lazy.", etc.), retorting entire points with one word that offers absolutely no context, response, or ideas ("Social interaction by hitting 'Like'? Please.", etc.), and not having any substantive reasoning behind your logic.

*While my points about the purpose of the majority of statuses were anecdotal in nature, never did I say something as outlandishly unprovable as a basis for an argument of mine as "People are stupid".

No you didn't. I did.

You will learn in time that this statement is irrefutable.
And no, I am not excluding myself from this either.
