Subject: The Didact.

-bow chicka brown cow-

So this is about Halo 4 and the Didact in the expanded universe.

As a lot of people think, the Didact might be the main antagonist of the upcoming reclaimer trilogy. This does not make sense to me as:

-In the Forerunner trilogy, he works with humans

-The humans pose no threat to him or the rest of the "Prometheans"

-the Librarian, his wife who may or may not be in the new trilogy, would vehemently protest it, and he is deeply devoted to his wife

-Edit: Hell, he turned Chakas into an AI, why would he do that if he hated humans?

Now understand this, these are just my reasons as to why I don't think the Didact is the antagonist of Halo 4. He is portrayed in every way as a noble, moral hero, as his name implies. I can't possibly imagine why 343i would want to place him as a villian, unless they pull a Deus Ex Machina out of their asses and he's been "corrupted" somehow.

Discuss please.

I was confused about this too, after reading the Thursday War they seem to be setting him up as a Sealed Evil in a Can.

Which really doesn't jibe with what we've learned about him before.

Especially with the tagline 'An Ancient Evil Awakens'

I think 343 is setting up an old switcheroo. You think Didact is your enemy nope he's just misinformed and angry.

Bam here's your real enemy. Like the Flood reveal in Combat Evolved.

It's really the only thing that makes sense.

The Flood wasn't the real enemy though. They were just another faction that entered the fray.

Er... another faction that entered the fray, that turned out to be the real enemy. The Flood is both the reason and catalyst for everything in Halo CE-3, and the story in general...

Huh. To me they were just another faction ... A more deadlier one granted, but I always saw the Covenant as the real enemy.

Let's get it own!

I see it as all lifeforms vs the flood.
Maybe the flood was created as a test. To see who deserves the Mantle. Whoever defeats them gets to rule.

Not to mention that, in the original from 343 onward, the Flood become the main enemy the player fights, with a few skirmishes with the Covenant here and there. Halo 2 is the only game in the original trilogy where the Covenant are the main antagonists.

Fixed.

Anyway, both the forerunners and precursors were jerks, so this doesn't surprise me.

"point" But still, the knowledge we've already learned about the Didact, points to the obvious, he shouldn't be a villian at all, he's a moral figure, hence "didactic" and would oppose it especially since he upholds the mantle.

Yes because 100,00 years of being trapped clearly leaves a person sane.

And having to bear talking to your wife moments before her death (or so you assume). coupled with killing all sentient life in the galaxy, finding out that your entire belief system is a sham and being stuck in a Flood-infested system for who-knows-how-long is clearly good on someone's mental health.

I thought it was born didact (didact 2.0) who talked to the his wife just before firing halo.

@ferrari:

I dunno, Silentium's summary seems to suggest that Ur-Didact is the one who fires the rings.

Aside from all that, he lived for what, 10,000 years before the forerunner-flood war took place? And he took part in the forerunner-human war, killing millions/billions of people, and he was sane then.

You've got a point, though some people do have limits to how much trauma they can take before snapping, and losing everything you hold dear can have negative effects on a person. Honestly though, it all depends on how they portray the Didact that'll make all the difference, so he might be an anti-villain for all we know.

And yes, I am bad at quoting once the limit is reached.

He hates humanity because they killed his children.

He always disliked humanity, the only reason he didn't erase them from existence is because of his wife, if she isn't there, she can't tell him no.

From reading the blurb on Amazon about Silentium, it still sounds to me like the ancient evil they are talking about isn't 'ur-Didact'

In fact they used the word evil to describe it. When trying to set up a cohesive story and make connections 343 tends to be fairly deliberate about these kind of things. Word choice is important.

"Facing the consequences of a mythic tragedy, one of them must now commit the greatest atrocity of all time
to prevent an insane evil from dominating the entire universe."

Didact is many things but he is neither insane nor evil.

Which is why I agree that he's a smoke screen for the real villain. Precursors seem likely, being the manipulative bastards they are. They could be orchestrating the events of the Reclaimer trilogy, including Didact.

  • 10.21.2012 6:33 PM PDT

Progo, Shrew, Chryso, all are the same.

Who says Didact will be evil? What if he isn't running things and is just a bystander.
I'm still holding out that precursors have something to do with this, maybe they have hijacked requiem. (okay shoot me down now lol, that's just pure speculation on my part)

I agree with you and ajw, aswell as it wont be the ur didact, because we can clearly see that he does infact encourge humans... The only thing i see is that the original didact was sent into cryptum instead of bieing killed.

Glory and fame, blood is our name!
Souls full of thunder, hearts of steel!
Killers of men, a warrior's friend!
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers!
Sons of the gods, today we shall die.
Open Valhalla's door!
Let the battle begin, with swords in the wind! Hail Gods of War!

I thought the Forerunners were sort of "above" things like revenge. We're applying human psychology to Forerunners. Granted, it makes sense.

They should just make an HLG playlist then you guys can hide against each other and see how much fun it is.

The didact is the main antagonist in H4, but I'm fairly sure he's not the ancient evil.

you are a good translator
Idiot can be a hard language to learn, but once you get it down, everything becomes so clear! The whole world will make sense to you.

I'm sure Jul 'Mdama beats you to him and paints humanity in a pretty negative light, especially because they're responsible for the death of his wife and started and insurrection all that good stuff, so the Didact is naturally going to be pretty butthurt that the new holders of the mantle are bullying the Elites.

Librarian should threaten him with no sex. He'll stop and be nice to humanity then.......Unless he finds out Bornstellar-Didact had sexy time with her. That would be awkward.
