I ask this because it is something that bothers me everytime another Halo game comes out. I always wonder if they're going to let Chief live or die at the end of it all.

I would feel devestated if they killed him, no matter the damn cause. Even if he died for the safety of humanity it would piss me off, HE SAVED THE GALAXY TWICE AND LIVED, it would be hard to justify his death.

The only way I'd feel satisfied is if he comes home alive, a hero, a mentor for the next generation of Spartans and Marines to live on.

But if he DOES die, it has to symbolize something so great that it would be acceptable, and it would have to be done in such a way that the whole saga wasn't a waste to follow him through his journey, that even at the end his death was worth it. There are movies where when the protagonist dies it is better, like Gladiator, but there are movies like Predator where it would suck if Arnold didn't live on.

discuss.

Tell that to Noble Team. And if they end it like that, I'd be pissed. They need to START Halo 4 with that quote though, somehow...

If MC is going to die then I think he should fly a Pelican or some other ship into an enemy ship whilst saying a cheesy one-liner before he collides with the enemy ship. MC dies, fleet stopped, Halo franchise ends.

He should die and be replaced with a protagonist that's actually interesting. Like Thel. Or Dubbo.

Like you said, if he were to die it would have so to symbolise something so epic it would be unbelievable. I could imagine his death as an ultimate tragedy, something the Halo series could use to their advantage.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I would have no problem at all with John dying at the end of Halo 6. IMO that is where the Halo series should stop, hopefully by the end of the next 10 years all the stories in the universe will be tied up so we can reach a satisfying and fulfilling conclusion.

I think in a post-ME3 gaming world, most developers will be reluctant to end their sagas in a way that isn't anything less than Disney-happy.

.

"Happiness is like glass, you might not always notice it but if you change your view and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light."

I would prefer he die alongside with Blue team in a final stand or battle. To me, that is the most fitting ending to Halo.

It wasn't the grimness of ME3's ending that made it bad or spawned (the majority of) complaints. It was the fault of [Casey Hudson & Mac Walters] the thematic and canonical inconsistency, the contrived nature of introducing something totally new in the last 5 minutes, the deus ex machina 9when we were promised there wouldn't be a "Reaper off-switch"), and having all of your choices culminate in absolutely nothing after being told that our choices will significantly impact the ending.

So long as Halo 6's ending doesn't stray away from 'storywriting 101' and manages to do the opposite of ME3 then a grim and grey ending would be fine.

Online Gaming's pretty much like a zombie movie. There are a lot of mindless idiots roaming around but you find some survivors on the way.

He should be drifting in space, to an unknown planet where unknown adventures await.

Emphasis on unknown.

I've changed my mind with regard to John's fate. I want closure but not death. I want Blue Team to reunite as well.

  • 10.22.2012 11:49 AM PDT

With Master Chief alive, obviously.

Only close minded people would think that killing the Chief is the only path he can follow to end his story. Oh, yeah, I forgot "MASTER CHEEF IS A SPARTAN AND SOSIETY CANNOT ACCEPT HIM!!!! REAHC IS TEH BEST HALO EVARRRR!!!!".

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

I think he doesn't need to die, but at least come to recognize his humanity. Also, he should return to Earth a hero, maybe meet his parents (if alive), and finally retire.

His homeworld got glassed so the chance of his parents surviving are very slim.

We should know better, because we are better.

It doesn't matter what I want because Chief isn't dieing. If he dies, Microsoft can't milk Halo anymore. Unless they promote Blue team to the main characters.

  • 10.22.2012 12:56 PM PDT

Halo Saga won't die unless Halo stops making money. But if you mean the Master Chief legacy, how do you want it to end?

Well the way I would see how it would end is that a new faithful character will follow up with the Master Chief along the new trilogy. And he has a huge potential to become as good as the Master Chief or even better. Then the Master Chief would most likely go to a point of no return (MIA) or possibly being killed in some dramatic event that the new hero witnessed.

Then the new hero takes his spot, and makes his armor referenced to the Chief but with more updated technology.
Then the Halo Saga is continued

Edit:
Personally, I think he would go MIA. 343 will probably put hints that teases players that the Master Chief is still alive from the incident that everyone thought he was dead. So no one will know, like no one will know how his face exactly looks like.

I vote for the third option. M.I.A.

Halo 3 is one of the most inconclusive 'conclusions' in the history of video games... The sheer number of plot points left hanging and got introduced in the last mission didn't just make Halo 4 inevitable, it was almost like it was planned.

They could have left it open-ended. Questions like "what happened after that?", "where did the flood come from?", "what about the Covenant?" don't need to be answered.

To have a man who served humanity in combat since the age of 14, that's all he ever has known about life. I say, have him come back and train the next generation of Spartans. He could train the next protagonist in the series and be his mentor.

You'd see Chief's side of humanity while he teaches him.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

I would want MC to find his way back to Earth after killing all the evils, and just live the rest of his life like any other person would. He's had his fair share of war already.
