If you think about it, Gravemind seems to be a good guy. When the Chief fell off of the the tower after fighting one of the Prophets, Gravemind was a good sport. There are a few things that would have caused this. One Gravemind really wants MC to win the fight and wipe out the Flood. Gravemind is not as much of the Flood as you think. He knows one of a few things is going to heppen. MC looses, and everything gets wiped out except Gravemind. Another, Master Chief wins, and the fight against the Flood is prolonged. The other Thing Gravemind may think is going to happen, is MC trusts Gravemind enough to listen to advice. How does he tell Chief what to do, I honesltly think that Cortana is being controled by Gravemind, as a median to tlak to Master Chief. Then Grave mind tricks Chief in some way I dont know. I Kinda threw this out there, and It may not make much sense, but try to make the best sense you can out of it.

The Marty Army

Ah, look at the lonely people...

Gravemind used the Master Chief and Arbiter to stop the Halos from firing. It SEEMED as if he wanted to SAVE everyone from being killed, but really, he didn't want everyone to be killed so the flood (and himself) could continue on.

Gravemind has his own agenda. Aside from what the arbiter and master chief agree on, we know they both want the "sacred icon". The arbiter wants it for the great journey, and the master chief wants it to stop the activation of the rings. Neither of them have any input on what gravemind says, or does, and since his agenda falls parallel to that of the master chief and arbiters, he takes advantage of them, knowing that they will see it as an opportunity to fulfill their own agendas, yet still doing the deeds of the gravemind and not realizing it.

It is unclear what gravemind's agenda is. Everyone is speculating on what his agenda is, but in my opinion I don't think there is an agenda as much as a question of "why he sent them" to try to retrieve the icon and stop the prophets.

The point being? If gravemind really want the master chief to stop the prophets and obtain the key, then why would he have sent the arbiter? If at any reason, I'd say gravemind atleast sent the arbiter to better show him the truth behind the prophets and the brutes, as we know that gravemind has one prophet, and one oracle in his possession.

Not anything to go by, but these are my thoughts on the matter.

Does anyone think it is possible gravemind is trying to "Harvest" enough food to last for some time? We know that the flood are sentient, because they began piloting ships and manning vehicles, so perhaps he wants enough to sustain the flood until they develop far enough to take advantage of the Halo installations?

I don't know...

Bungie has a habit of throwing huge plot twists... I could see there be something even more interesting then gravemind, and that he was only leading into that matter.

The graveminds just saving his own -blam!-. He knew he wasn't going to be able to stop Truth, so he saved the MC so that he could do it for him, because he knew he would
