I don't know about all you guys, but personally, I hated the weapon sounds for Halo 2. They all sucked.
Think about it. In Halo 1, when you fired the Warthog Turret, you scared anyone nearby. Your screen actually SHOOK. It had a powerful, deep, thunderous report. It was instantly identifiable. When you heard it, you thought, "Oh, damn! Get down!" Even if you were just in the same warthog as a firing turret your screen shook a bit, and your controller vibrated. The same is true for the Halo 1 tank turret

For Halo 2, the warthog turret was quiet. It sounded like someone dropping rice on a metal tin. Or a snare drum. It wasn't scary sounding. It was just really fast clicking. When you heard it you laughed. Gatling guns are scary, but it sounded like a can off BB's being dropped. If you were in the ohg when the turret fired, nothing happened, except for the annoying noise. It wasn't powerful, and unlike Halo 1, its report didn't demand respect with armor piercing force. And this is true for all the turrets in Halo 2, they all sound like spilled rice.

The same is true for the Halo 1 AR and the Halo 2 SMG. The Halo 1 AR was versatile, not overpowered, but not weak either. When it fired, it sounded scary. It too was a realistic thundering storm of lead.
The SMG... isn't powerful, isn't scary, and its sound makes me want to stick nails into my ears. The closest weapon to it in real-life is probably the HK MP5, and it has a dull, loud thud, much like the AR did.

The pistol in Halo 1 had a sharp, AR-15-like CRACK when it fired, you KNEW what it was, and you KNEW to take cover, when the rock next to you exploded. The Halo 2 pistol sounded like someone hitting spoons together. Isn't it a magnum? Magnums are LOUD. They can make your ears BLEED. They have a sharp, loud CRACK. The Halo 2 pistol? A weak whimper of a report.

What about the Plasma weapons, yes, halo 1 kicked ass for plasma sounds, Halo 2 SUCKED! Listen to the sounds of them in Halo 1, the PP and PR both had powerful noises. The SOUNDED forceful. They didn't just fire plasma, they SPIT it, like a deady missile, they just sounded more powerful.
What about Halo 2? The plasma weapons WHINED. WAAAH! I don't want to kill the humans! WAAH! The didn't sound forceful, they sounded like a lost kitten!

The shottie is in the same boat, but not as much. The H2 shottie sounded okay. But it sounded very metallic. Like two pans hitting together. The Halo 1 shottie was better, it was very explosive, sounded like a real shottie, and had decent range (as opposed the the Halo 2 shottie, with a range of about 5 milimeters)

Also, the grenades were better, they had a bigger blast radius, and the frag in Halo 2 was painfully downgraded. In Halo 1, the frag gave you a huge, fiery EXPLOSION OF PAIN! Halo 2? It kicked up some dust.

These are my thoughts. Anyone else think the same thing? If you don't compare the weapon sounds, then go fire some real weapons. You'll see.

i agree about the warthog gun, i like H2's tank noise, and maybe the magnum, but in the books the plasma weapons were said to have a "whining" sound anyways, so no big deal there

shotgun, i say louder noise than either of the games so far

it would be hard to power frags up more because of the "no health bar" in H2

Yeah, none of this lame clicking crap like they had for the SMG.

  • 06.28.2006 7:06 PM PDT

well the point is... you dont want your gun to be loud.

you dont want people to notice that you are shooting.

you dont want the enemy army to notice that you just killed their leader.

I'd love harming my enemies to death with butt strokes. XD

I miss the old plasma weapons...they sounded cool, and they did damage. actually, a real shotgun..ummm...cant describe the noise...but trust me, this sounds a lot cooler than a real shotgun. i laughed at the sound of the SMG, its pathetic.

true, but in a video game??

also - some people play with their sound off. then what?

Do you feel what I feel, see what I see, hear what I hear?

I think the plasma-based weapons sound much better in Halo 2. They are deeper and sound more powerful. In Halo they were a simple 'blip' and nothing more.

I do, however, agree with you about the SMG.

and besides, its a game, who cares if it is silent... we want loud cool sounding noises

  • 06.28.2006 7:25 PM PDT

Don't forget that the AIs react to noises in campaign.

Have you ever played Halo 2 in surround sound? My buddies and I would and it is, needless to say, very intense.

And there is phycological impact of a guy with MJOLNIR armor running toward you repeling your shots.

TI like the sound of the new Plasma Weaponry, the sould is suppoesed to whine, the Plasma Rifle was more upgraded than downgraded. As well as sould ITs more sharp, faster fire rate and takes down shields faster, try aiming for the head to kill someone. Kills pretty fast duel weilded.

I agree on the Plasma Pistol, Needler(though not listed). SMG is supposed to be silenced, caseless rounds.

The Assault Rifle didn't sound intiminating at all, it had a unique sound, but for me, it didn't sound real. But the BR55 sounded much more menacing. For the tank? It's machine gun couldn't hit crap in Halo 1, wasn't nearly as damaging, either. It's sounds faster. The actual cannon sounds more rugged. The one from halo 1 just sounded like the impact of a rocket. Or one firing off. Warthog gattling gun, didn't sound diffrent except it vibrated, and less accurate. I find the report of a gauss cannon much more terrifying anyway. Ghost shots just sounded like the old plasma Rifle, same with the Banshee, the sounds in Halo 1 are oddly similiar, they are much diffrent in 2.

The Rocket launcher actually made a noise in halo 2, when it wizzed by your face, good explosion too.

Don't forget surround, sounds much better with that.

I feel the exact same way!
I honestly miss the awesome sounds of all the CE guns.
I wish the would add reports in big canyon levels like coagulation.
I love the CE hog!

The Halo 1/Halo CE hog was terribly bugged. The players would get damage if someone shot the wheel.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, but I thought the SMG had a small silencer? isnt that why its not loud?

The SMG sounds surpressed. It sounds almost like it has a silencer on it, but nooooo... your enemies can still hear that sound like a person quietly tearing up a peice of paper from five miles away...

Also: with most guns you had to turn the safety off with in Halo. In Halo 2, you stored them armed and fully loaded, waiting to take a chunck out of your ass at the least expected moment. More to the point, The Assault rifle actually made a real noise when you cycled the bolt and took off the safety. The SMG, errr... squeaked...

I think they should make the weapons feel and sound more powerful as they are in Halo CE. Halo 2s weapons were a big dissapointment powerwise I mean the smg sounds pathetic when I hear it it makes me think that theres a pathetic little kid behind me shooting at me with a bebe guns so they really need to amp up th poert of thrdr weapons.

  • 06.28.2006 11:44 PM PDT

Dream Theater FTW!!

I think the plasma guns sound WAAY cooler in Halo 2. And I pretty much hated the AR sound.
