From the Halo Story page here.

"Unable to harmonize with and thereby commandeer his nervous system, due to its erratic behaviour as a symptom of Boren's Syndrome (p.243, FS), the Flood simply passed him over. The only apparent trace of his pseudo-infection are bits of dead, non-infectious Flood DNA, from which some intact gene fragments have given him a kind of regenerative ability (though whether these leftovers are a result of the parasitic invasion or Johnson's eating the little bastard for the inconvenience is unknown ;) "

I think this is the biggest hint that humanity will figure out not only how to defeat the Flood, but also use them to our advantage.

yeah, we should have some kick ass fight scene where we send the flood against all the new covenant, on their home worlds and everything.

Well, no one lives forever...yet. But that's where the regenerative aspect of the leftover Flood DNA comes into effect, maybe the disease acts like a vaccine against infection, but the leftover Flood genes heal someone enough to counteract the mortality of the disease, ya follow?

i believe the forrunners built the flood looking for immortality, but it either only worked for certain people, or it went horribly wrong.

You need to read First Strike. While it is possible, it's an incredible longshot.

  • 06.28.2006 3:44 PM PDT

Do you feel what I feel, see what I see, hear what I hear?
There is a line you must draw between your dream world and reality

could use Johnson to create some kind of vaccine of sorts

first there IS no covenent home world cortona was going to over load amberclads reactor and destroy it (it was over run by flood)

Also it would take a pretty long cutsceen to tell how they used the flood to make everybody emune and have reginitative properties

Sorry missed this is the first one
but mabye thats why he was invincible in halo2? hhmm...

Or in my case, re-read it? At this point in the story, I think anything is possible. Who would have thought Johnson survived after the first game, and yet there he is.

Well, in any case, many of the details as to what really happened and how Johnson escaped from the Flood on 343 Guilty Spark will finally be revealed in the graphic novel coming out next month. Perhaps that will shed some light on it.

How do you know there's no Covenant homeworld? They could have many worlds, like the UNSC did. High Charity was a Holy City, like a huge spacestation of sorts. It's unlikely that its the only place the Covenant inhabit. Oh, and I like the stuff you put at the bottom.

And another thing. Cortana never detonated In Amber Clad's fusion reactor, even though Tartarus activated Delta Halo. Doesn't anyone think that's wierd? I think there may be some ulterior motive for Cortana staying on High Charity.

The thing is, Johnson's nervous system is degenerating. That's the reason why the Flood couldn't assimilate the nervous system.

If we were to give every human being Boren's Syndrome to protect them from the flood...

a.) We'd all end up dead soon enough due to neural degradation
b.) we'd all end up dead when the hivemind of the flood decides to just kill us off since we're bio-incompatible.

Getting back on topic, I think Sgt. Johnson's circumstances are unique and it would be pretty difficult to replicate them for every living human being in the galaxy. However, because I don't really know how Bungie plans on ending the story arc, there are many possibilities. Plus it wouldn't be very fun to the player if suddenly the Flood were simply no longer a problem.

THose are all good points, but you are missing the interesting little part that mentions that the left over Flood bits from the infection form that tried to infect him was actually regenerating him. That could be implying that not only is he infection-proof, but he is also in remission.

Well, you have another good point, but this only helps protect against infection forms, you would still have to deal with all the other pre-infected Flood warriors. Plus, no one said that the infection forms couldn't still kill you, they just wouldn't infect you.

So, once his nervous system regenerated completely, he would then be vulnerable to infection.

A ticking time bomb!

Unless... the combination of Flood and disease acted as a vaccine, therefore he can be cured and infection-proof.

LOLZ, I can see the next trailer now:

Cortanta: I am your sword. I am your shield.

Sgt. Johnson: And I'm your key! Now stick me in and turn it, double time!

I got to this, and didn't feel like reading anymore. If you didn't know.. Sgt. Johnson is god. He never dies... he can't... hes to.. erm... badass. He's the coolest in the halo universe so he's untouchable.

You think it got what it takes to be..?.

God forbid you send me one of those I was checking for cool gamers and saw you messages too, I will scream to the top of my lungs and smash this damn screen/BlackBerry to pieces! You've been warned -_-

I think Johnson will more likely turn into a combat form. Sholdn't he be a lieutenant by now?
