How is it that the names of the Brutes are based on Greek gods? Do they coincidentally have the same mythology as the Greeks?

  • 10.24.2012 1:07 PM PDT

I think it's safe to assume that Bungie just had a thing for Greek mythology.

  • 10.24.2012 1:09 PM PDT

yeah but how would you explain such a coincidence? it makes no sense its like saying we find aliens and they looks exactly like humans and have the same language it just would never happen.

  • 10.24.2012 1:17 PM PDT

They should make it so the story explains this like maybe they somehow have human artifacts on their planet that the forerunners put there detailing greek mythology.

Um...Tartarus is the only one >_> Maccabeus is way more similar to the Jewish name/family Maccabes than anything Greek, and actually, the Brute names sound more Latin than anything else...and honestly, who cares? Why is it a big deal? It's just a name, who cares what their name is as long as the story is good.

  • 10.24.2012 1:42 PM PDT

yeah but what they call themselves is important to the story i mean they needed to come up with their names at some point how did aliens come up with jewish/greek names?

They read The Odyssey and thought it was really cool.

We should know better, because we are better.

Brute names are actually made of two parts. At birth they are given a name, let's say Brut, and when they reach adulthood the '-us' suffix is added, so it would be Brutus. Tartarus was originally named Tartar until later in his life.

This. Although some Brutes are known to have "-um" instead of of "-us" as the suffix.

Also theorized that each pack might have a different 'adult' suffix.

Like the region tartarus was born in has packs that use the "us" suffix, while other region brutes have a different one. Or the "us" is the most common.

Possibly. It would make sense.

I do know Elites have an "-ai" suffix as well, but that's only to denote Swordsman status.

Vote for me for a free cookie.

I remember in the Vi Doc 'Et tu Brute?' someone said that the brutes were based on the Barbarians of Rome

What a waste....

Pretty sure there's a whole slew of things for their various classes.

Point is, Bungie liked Greece and the Jews and Rome. And suffixes.

So their names are coincidences within the Halo Universe? Or are names like Brutus and Tartarus non existent within the fictional human fiction within the story?

Tatarus is just a name and so is Brutus. No one in the Halo universe really cares because it's not a big deal. It's just a name.

So yes, you could say it's a coincidence, but a very minor one that isn't of any real importance within the Halo Universe.

I would be a little confused if we found an alien race and they were calling themselves Jesus and Vishnu wouldn't you?

A great Brute became a joke in the Covenant, when he got his suffix it dragged him down. He is: Diabeet.

Except Tartarus is a one time thing. Brutus has the name of some roman guy. Whoop de do.

No other Brutes are named after human religous/historical places/people.
Parabum? Parab is isn't anything I know of.

Obviously it's not important since no one brings it up in the Halo Universe.
