Subject: Why keep the flood alive?

Lets Boogie

Once the forerunners used the Halo's to starve the Flood, why did they keep some alive? Wouldn't it have been better to finish the job? That way future generations would not have to worry about some flood menace at all.

Soon to be breaking news:

US Coast Guard prepares for massive rescue mission after Iranian fleet sinks off shore. Reports say a small thunderstorm caused most of the ships to simply...fall apart.

To study them. They came from outside the galaxy.

The Flood were very much familiar with Forerunner tech. In fact a rogue Forerunner AI, Mendicant Bias, was "converted" to the Flood's cause. He could've sent the Flood into the Halo Arrays just before or after the Rings were fired.

Except that the flood still exists, outside the galaxy, so they kept some sample to study them, to try and find a cure.

If not a cure, at least a more effective way to combat them. We've learned to counter strategies and not repeat horrendous mistakes of the past BY learning about what caused them and how to better counteract them. The Forerunners were, literally, the most advanced civilization in the galaxy at that time, and some random parasite from outside the Milky Way comes in and almost kills them off faster than the Reapers did to the Protheans in Mass Effect. The only reasonable options for the Forerunners was to shoot themselves in the head in order to keep the Flood from taking over their brains. The only REASONABLE option.

Of course some Forerunner scientists would isolate some Flood spores for study. These things need to be studied thoroughly, partially to counter and possibly even cure another Flood outbreak, or vaccinate a Flood outbreak, or at the very least, find some way to destroy Flood on a massive scale that doesn't involve glassing planets and leaving entire populations to die.

Hey, now!

This is officially either the greatest or worst thing to ever happen to Star Wars. I'm going with the former.

Hey, uh, if you like vs threads, then check out this little group right here, if you have the time. It's pretty fun, just hop right in.

The forerunners are scientifically brilliant but retarded in every other regard.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

All the Flood samples are kept for a simple purpose that is given by Guilty Spark in Halo 2:

"This mining facility predates Installation Alpha by several hundred years. It was retrofitted to research possible offensive and defensive measures against the Flood. Indeed, I designed and oversaw the construction of this facility's various outbreak management systems."

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

Canon has us believe otherwise, but this is the true reason. (Jokingly).

To study them, they were hoping to find a better way to kill them than using Halo.

Wait dont forget about ancient Humanity they had war with the forerunners AND fought the flood at the same time the forerunners werent the most advanced they were practically the same with ancient humanity and remember this ancient humanity actually FOUND some sort of cure ....... untill the forerunners destroyed everything hooray for forerunners :)

It makes you think doesn't it? If the Flood came into our galaxy from another, what else can come into our galaxy?

The Flood could've come into our galaxy because it was going extinct, for lack of a better word, in it's original galaxy because a more powerful race learnt how to fully combat it.

We still don't know who buildt the ship that cotained the Flood powder, right, maybe its only way of surviving the trip between galaxies was through that powder?

Exact science, is not an exact science.

Ebola exists right now in a lab somewhere safe and sound.

That's why.

If that's a true and accurate quote, then that certainly contradicts what we know about Chakas and Guilty Spark in the Forerunner Trilogy.

Edit: Or perhaps not, because although it would make very little logical sense, it's possible that Spark's involvement can be explained that the "outbreak management systems" were put into place LONG after the mine was constructed. It's a cop out for sure, but it's the only way to fit in canon.

Edit 2: Ah, I kept skipping over the "retrofitted" aspect. So I suppose it wouldn't be a cop out after all.

Eh no, the Forerunner Empire was still miles ahead of both Ancient Humanity and the San 'Shyuum empire. Humanity did not discover a cure, the Primordial pretty much confirms it, they were just deemed worthy cause they sacrificed 1/3 of their population to test said cure.

"They were little less advanced than [Forerunners]" - Cryptum. Forerunners had mastery of slipspace, but aside from that Ancient Humanity wasn't far off the Forerunners at all.

Ummm... go read the second book in the forerunner trilogy. There is no cure. It was nothing but a test to see how many people we would throw at the flood with the "cure". Hell it wasn't so much a cure as it was a bio-weapon.

Have they demonstrated any significant feat of technological advancement? have they made a shell that is 300 million kilometers in diameter and then turned it into the size of a football?

Regardless of anything above, the Forerunners beat them in any possible aspect, compare the 20,000 worlds humanity had with the 3,000,000 words the Forerunner empire had, even if they were "equals" the Forerunners would still win, even with the help of the San 'Shyuum (the ones responsible for actually doing something against the Forerunners by making weapons that actually worked) they still would lose.

I'm bringing in hard evidence, a quote that states concretely humans were 'little less advanced' than the Forerunners. You're blabbering conjecture.

It's implied Ancient Humanity was fairly new on the scene compared to the Forerunners - we first surfaced 200,000 years ago. Going by how long it took from our reseeding to the Ark to the point of an industrial revolution, I'd say it probably took Ancient Humanity roughly the same time to reach the level of a space faring race - just shy of 100,000 years.

At most, Ancient Humanity was spacefaring for a few thousand years before our war with the Flood and Forerunners. The Forerunners have been spacefaring for more than 25,000 - that's how long ago they built the Capitol. There are probably more accurate statistics if someone wants to look.

Thus, it makes sense that the Forerunners have more worlds. They were at it for longer than humanity. We haven't seen anything from Ancient Humanity on the level of the dyson sphere, but we haven't seen much of Ancient Humanity's peak might at all, save for a few visions of Charum Hakkor.

I think the flood is just a species that take over and evolve a host body. Humans consume and minupilate(cant spell lol) the food we eat to convert them into energy for our own use. So i see them as just another lifeform like elites, grunts or jackels, not zombies. There cant really be a cure for something that isnt a virus. the only way to kill them is firepower or make peace with them. ( im prolly wrong in so many way to some peeps but dont hate just tell me nicely)

They are just another species, just one that acts in a viral manner and should be treated instead as a plague to be eradicated.

The only reason the forerunners were unable to just squash them out of the galaxy with one power-armored boot is because they didn't realize how great a threat the flood was until they were getting their grubby little tentacles down the forerunners' bastard throats.
