Subject: Oh popularity, how you annoy me...

Well one of things that annoys me is when people constantly strive for popularity. It, to me, is one of the most annoying things in the freaking world. People should not care what other people think of them or who "knows them". I am a strong believer in not caring what other people think.

It also annoys me when people talk about how popular and or "cool" some people are. Just last sunday I was talking to a friend of mine who was talking about how there is like a "chain of popularity." I don't mind talking about it every once in a while but it drives me nuts talking about it to much.

Then you have people who hate popularity so much that anything that comes across as it they complain about.

But not just in real life, but also on the internet, and not just on the internet but here. To me it is one of the most annoying things here on Bungie.net.

I feel like there is a large focus on becoming popular, and just talking about popularity in general. It is funny since I am making this entire thread about how I hate talking about popularity. Honestly, I don't understand the point of caring about it especially on the internet.

I mean really, is that something you are going to brag about to people? "Well I mean sure, you might be able to dunk a basketball while doing a back flip. But hey, I'm popular on Bungie.net! So come at me bro."

I just find it is stupid, and I think it is stupid that I felt like this thread. Oh well add another stupid thread to my list of stupid threads I guess..

Dear tomorrow, Find some sensibility, Respond to emotion.
Dear Politician, Define sagacity,
All chances of survival are beginning to diminish.
Comedy is no excuse for our own blasphemies.
Mass media, Mass pessimism, Mass Denial.
My television tells me to panic, but I don't think I'll listen.
The apathetic force us to persevere, with their backwards priorities.

Is popularity not an incentive for good behavior? At least here on Bungie?

@spaboolly

That's odd... I could have sworn I graduated high school years ago.

But really, it is human nature to want to be well-liked and respected. Sometimes that gets contorted into this belief in popularity. Just ignore it. People will either learn humility, or come to realize that surrounding themselves with fake friends (real life or virtual) has no substantial value.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

No one should "strive" for popularity. Those who I would consider "popular" are the ones who have done something significant and have gained some recognition or have been around for a while and/or have an interesting posting styles/content.

And remember, being "popular" isn't always a good thing. You could known for something not so positive.

Key

To not care what others think of you is ignorant. It's almost as ignorant as it is to place an exaggerated importance on being popular.

Also, if you say you don't care what other people think of you, you're most likely lying, even if you say you're not. The likelihood that you actually have absolutely no feelings or ounce of care-juice in your care-cup for what other people think is far outweighed by the chance that you're most likely just saying something like that to seem not-so-self-absorbed. Because, apparently, people conscious of the fact that they, along with almost everyone else, enjoys attention and cares about what other people think are self-centered.

Take all of that, relate it directly to BNet, put an OT at the beginning of this, and I'm done.

While yes everyone has a little of caring what other people think. Well, at least at some points. I find it stupid to have that be one of the things that motivate people's actions in real life and on here.

No, I personally do not care about how others perceive me here on B.net. What I do care about, as others should as well, is how others respond to what I have to say. Sure, your perception of someone could potentially alter your response to them, but the way you alter your response to your perception of me really doesn't matter.

If I did care, wouldn't I need some type of verification? Some way to know how others perceived me?

While I strongly disagree with "you shouldn't care what other people think of you", I'll agree if the parameters are online on a forum.

Being popular online is meaningless in value, but some people meet friends online, and popularity usually helps/comes from that.

I understand this, but this would go for people doing really something cool, in arts or something interesting, not just writing in a forum and pretending you're better than others. That's just sad.

I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

On this site, it doesn't really mean much.

I've always agreed with following by example. I don't like the fact that mods posts don't have the option to report. Why should an individual be given the right to ban spammers when he/she spams himself? Off topic posts are considered spam, right?

OT: In my opinion, if you strive to be popular and make it a "goal" then you will more than likely earn a the title of being "obnoxious" or other similar adjectives. If you are destined to be one of the popular members, it will happen. Just don't try.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I have taken nothing the OP said as truth. He clearly wants to be Mr. Popular!

Step One: Agree with anything a mod says

Step Two: Be a member longer.

Step Three: ????????????

Step Four: Popularity.

Popularity is not always a good thing. Most of the popular people are the most hated people. Individuals that strive for popularity are weak and insecure.

I'm not sure if your being serious or not but this topic has been brought up many times. Using the report button to report mods would be useless, seeing that they manage the report queue.....not to mention I can see people getting on Alt's and trolling mods through the report button. If you want to report a mod there is a way, you can PM a master mod or DeeJ or Achronos if I'm not mistaken. I just thought I'd let you know.

Posted by: VerachiI may have sounded a little more serious than originally intended but it's not a joke. And I'm aware of how to report a mod. I personally don't see any need to. Foman is an excellent mod and was obviously selected for a reason. Besides, sending a message is so inconvenient.
