Subject: The saddest thing in Halo

Pity Humanity in Halo isn't something worth fighting for. Well, at least that's what I would think when deciding whether or not I want to risk my life for it.

How very misanthropic. I'd say it's instinct to preserve your own species, and if a situation arose where I had to destroy humanity or an alien species where every individual epitomises the best qualities in life, I still wouldn't even consider destroying humanity.

Hating your own species just seems like the popular thing to do these days, as if it qualifies you as an intellectual.

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

I said "In Halo". Humanity in the Halo fiction is little more than a corpse, on its way to joining the Imperium of Man. It just doesn't know that it is dead yet.

I see no reason, other than emotional reasoning, to preserve a species simply because it is my species. That wouldn't factor into it at all. It is something that I don't see questioned an awful lot in sci-fi and it is something to question in our own society: Are you fighting for just your nation, or are you fighting for something that transcends that, such as Human dignity, the sanctity of life, Justice, Human Rights, etc?

Humanity in Halo though has become something of a tyrannical, parasitical and xenocidal imperialist state and it is not something that I would want to see preserved at all. Species doesn't matter in the slightest for me. Why would anyone want to fight to spread that? Obviously pre-Halo 3 it is in my best interest to fight, but after it when Human isn't a mark to be killed I don't see why, especially when there might be other places that aspire to more.

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

In other words, if the Flood truly is a test, humanity, as it ir right now in the Haloverse, would fail.

Without diving into the books, I guess I would have to say that the ending to Halo 3 was pretty sad for me. It wasn't sad in the sense that it made me boohoo because the player knows what really happened, but it was incredibly sentimental if you've been a fan of the series since at least 2006/7 and it was sad for me that the trilogy was coming to an end.

Although it's not exactly sad, I do find most of the Rookie's ventures in ODST to be very emotional and sensitive. The fact that you're playing a character who's reserved, yet completely separated from the support of his team can be pretty trying and tense at times, not to mention the environments and music done for that game was so flipping phenomenal. Marty is just a straight-up baller with his music and I think there is no OST I revisit more than Halo 3: ODST's because it's so sentimental and emotional.

Saddest: Halo 3's ending.

Emotional: Halo 3: ODST as the Rookie.

Finished Halo 4 and nothing compares to Cortana's death. When Laskey says they're humans, not machines, John realises that it took a 'machine' to make him understand that there's really no difference - life is life, organic or artificial. That's what Cortana meant when she said 'figure out which of us is the machine' - that neither of them really are. A soldier can seem just as mechanical as an A.I, but when the battle's over, that all falls away and humanity's all that's left. Cortana's death is tragic, but the silver lining is that for the first time it makes John realise how truly human he is, represented thematically at the end by the removal of his armour and thus, the exposing of that humanity to the world.

In a time where the Forerunners threaten to destroy humanity, realising that's what you are is going to be more important than ever. A reason to fight, and a reason to live.

nicely put

I always tried to save every single marine for some stupid reason... ofcours it never actually worked out.

Mostly felt sad in halo 2, poor marines dieing from flood..

Same! I love having a squad to fight with. My favourite game for this is Halo 3.

Saddest death? Johnson, no doubt.

I was too excited to be saddened by Cortana's death in Halo 4. That will probably change.

This sig will Self-Destruct in 3.... 2.... 1.... Thank you for your time. Cookie?

I'd have to agree with the OP that Keyes's death in Halo Anniversary, with the Terminal context and whatnot, was possibly the most poignant death.

Though seeing Spark's slow descent into madness after the firing of the rings was also kinda striking. He's always this annoying little fairy prancing around and generally making things bad for the player, and then you realize that you're the first human interaction he's had in millenia upon millenia.

Kinda depressing in retrospect.

Expressing my strong liberal views without shame. Favorite quotes below:

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."
"One starts to live when he can live outside himself."

Johnson's death in Halo 3 was heartbreaking, as was Cortana's in Halo 4.

Every death has a meaning to it, a certain story. That's what I like about Bungie.

  • 11.14.2012 8:02 PM PDT

I agre OP. That terminal was really an eye opener to see what it was like to be infected. It took me back to the book, The Flood, when Jenkins is mutated into a combat form. I seriously felt bad for the guy and the fact that he just wanted to die so bad, really got me. I guess that's why he's one of my favorite characters.

Jenkins overall story and Johnson's death were the saddest moments for me. Though I was quite sad for the chief.... ya know.. for losing that thing...

  • 11.14.2012 9:16 PM PDT

I originally read this in the Halo novel The Flood and it did really have a saddening effect even then. But I would have to say the saddest moments are the Spartan deaths to me. Especially Sam.

  • 11.15.2012 11:04 AM PDT

1. Kurt's death
2. Cortana at end of Halo 4 (used to be Keyes)
3. Keyes terminal
4. 343 Guilty Spark terminal (where he basically starts going rampant and leaves his installation)

Humanity hasn't finished it's test. Master Chief's encounter with the Flood is the beginning.

Cortana's Halo 4 journey, and the effect it had on 'Chief. It was brilliantly executed.

I was moved by Reach's teaser trailer, especially the part where you hear desperate servicemen radioing in on the increasingly hopeless situation. The music really underlined how futile the war was.

  • 11.16.2012 7:40 PM PDT

Survive until the red dawn rises, when we have spilled the blood of our enemies.

So many good characters in the Halo universe died. Each ones death had a brutal impact on me. Jorge's death got me especially. Because he sacrificed his life in hope to save Reach, and Reach fell anyhow. SGT. Johnsons death got me too, I loved his dry sense of humour. Ah! Darnit... so many awesome characters dead >.<

It is very sad. Its so hopeless its one of those situations where they would do ANYTHING to survive as a species, even if that meant fighting hopeless battles.

And what came out of that War, a scared, desperate species willing to create wars and kill many other species to survive... its not really pretty. Kilo-5 makes me dislike Humanity's attitude.

A competitive players main goal is to win.
A casuals main goal is to have fun regardless of whether that results in a win or loss.
It has nothing to do with individual skill or knowledge, it has to do with the reason you play.

Johnsons death was really moving. When you see the blank visor of the Chief looking at Johnson.... I can almost see the pain on the Chiefs face just through the way that helmet stared down.

Noble Six' death was also pretty sad, just because it was so tragic and brave and stupid and gutsy and defiant.

That Reach teaser was amazing.

all you guys are making me teary eyed again....thanks :D

@PISTOLSQUIRREL I got chill bumps reading that haha! Halo 4's story and dialog was brilliant.

OT, if I had to do a top 5, it would look like this:

1. Cortana Halo 4
2. Keyes Terminal
3. Jorge (Make it count)
4. SGT. Johnson
5. Sam (Fall of Reach book)

Read Fall of Reach or First Strike, kinda sad when some of the Spartan II's die.
