If you play Halo and you have no idea what a mod is, you need t o kill yourself.
A mod can refer to one of 2 things here.
A mod is a shorten word from modification. Making changes to the game for better, usually for Halo CE. Let's say you would like your AR to shoot FRG's missles. All you do is crack open HMT and look for the FRG's metadata (preload) and then copy it to the AR's data. Now you will pwn, just make sure everyone has the same map you do. A mod can also refer to a system mod. Usually found in the Xbox topics. There a certain modchips out for Xbox's (none for 360) that will manipulate a few of it's prime features. What people can do online is found an .iso image (which contains all of the game's data and crap) and copy it to a disk. Now, most Xbox's will read it as mixed media disc, but with a modchip you can download the game to a new hd, or have the Xbox read the image. Oh ho ho it's good to be a pirate :D
Another use for the word mod is Moderator. Someone who overlooks the regular crowd and makes sure they are in order. Mods can edit posts and banhammer and crap, but they are supposed to make sure no one is getting out of order. I would recommend you don't piss them off.
Couldn't have said it better myself, RoXaS. Also, mods can also refer to computer cases. And mods seem to be very different from the Xbox user to the PC gamer. For PCs, modding usually means manipulating the game to expand game content, whereas for Xboxes, modding usually means manipulating the game to gain an unfair advantage over others, AKA cheating/hacking.
