I can see where your coming from, but as already mentioned when you first play a Halo game your bound to die at some point even on easy, all it takes is one lousy lucky grenade throw and youv'e got a plasma grenade stuck to you.
Obviously the MC isn't invincible so there would be certain scenarios where you would have to fall back because "there are too many of them". But it's a tricky thing to do because of the immense amount of coding and programing required for a game like this. and if the choice thing was only on the last level it sort of negates the whole idea.
Dont get me wrong it is a good idea, but I dont think that it would work as you intend it to, and not many people would be happy with getting all the way to the end only for them to die and fail the whole objective of the game.
Maybe something less extreme, such as the choice of weapon or vehicle or even who you take with you through certain parts of the game.
For example do I tell the Pelican pilot to fly ahead and wait, or do I load up with a squad of marines and drop off further ahead.
