Ok so I have been thinking a little bit about what we know so far and I have a theory of my own. What if Bungie are planning for the campaign to be a co-op play experience only?

Ok don't flame me yet. Lets look at what we know already, or think we know anyway

Online Co-Op play is the most requested feature for the next game
There has been a lot of speak about BOTS
Rumour has it that there are going to be 4 spartans - (dots in the visor?)
A story was leaked that Halo 3 was going to be a MMORPG
The new engine will be able to cope with LOTS of enemies on the screen at one time.
Bungie is a company that develops real next-gen games
halo2 is the most successful online console game ever.
Xbox Live is the future.

Putting all this together, I have a feeling that the campaign will see you team up with 3 other Spartens, either through Xbox live, or offline with BOTS.

Some levels will require you to all stay together to slay the massive flood or covenant forces, which will be far greater nin number than in a single player experiance. Other levels may require you to split up to do different tasks at the same time on the same level.

The first Halo game was applauded for its squad based play. The problem though when you look back you never really cared if the cannon fodder marines that were there with you for a few minutes then died. If it were mission critical that you look out for your team mates and they look after you, that is what Bungie intended to start off with and I believe what this game will offer.

If they are going to be bringing back the Elite guy, It also would not surprise me to see two separate campaigns running side to side and have a similar setup of 4 elites playing one path in the same sort of way. Some levels may even see the two groups come into proximity of each other and I would expect at least one shootout to the death, maybe as a replacement for end of level bosses.

And what happens when you die I hear you say? Well you would return to the start of the level with a new full squad, whereas your teammates would have to carry on without you one man down.

The Halo2 matchmaking system setup could be used, allowing for parties to be formed, friends and enemies to be made.

For those without xboxlive I wouldnt think you would have to worry. Bungie is giving off the impression that it is developing some clever ass AI for the game. I believe this is the reason why.

Multiplayer does not have be just be about fights to the death and controlling the hill. Multiplayer should be more about having fun and an experience with other like minded people. Even if this little theory is a load of crap, I admit it is more a figment of my imagination than any real facts, but you have to admit, it would be pretty -blam!- good!

That would be sweet, but only if the spartans were like Johnson from Halo 2. So they can't die. I think it would end up being more of an escort mission if not.

The evidence you have provided is not nearly enough to suggest a co-op only campaign. you menioned that you have thought of this from "what we know already", however we dont know to much at all

ok, i read your whole post and that is the shi-ttest idea i have ever heard and i'v heard people saying that the last level should be mc running through a field covered in flowers killing flood with a daisy shooting crossbow.
your trying to turn halo into another brute force, a good game i'll admit but totally not what halo is about, halo is about you beeing the last surviving hope for man kind, the last sparten, only you can save earth.
so your idea is totally crapp.

(spelling mistakes are diliberate so they dont get blamed)

Firstly, 'we kids' don't only read the first line, but if it's too long, bugger it. Secondly, what about the people who don't like co-op. Hmmm? Ever thought that other people might actually - GASP! - not like what you like! I know it's shocking but it's a possibility.
Sorry but i like flaming people.

I don't think anyone who has replied so far has actually the mental capacity to read the entire post let alone process it!

But anyway, interesting thoughts Teh Spankz0r - that really would be pushing the envelope. However I'm not sure that people want their envelope to be pushed... in the case of Halo anyway. As the biggest gaming franchise about and the flagship of the xbox series and microsoft's gaming in general, would it not be the ideal vehicle for pushing towards a next-gen play style? Or, for exactly the same reasons, would it alienate fans too much?

Only a couple of things I'd disagree with - Halo squad based play, those marines were cannon fodder in my opinion. You couldn't get them to do anything you wanted, sure it was fun keeping them alive, but they are some of the earlier examples of friendly AI. Also I really don't think a bunch of spartans will be returning, don't ask me why, I just don't!

Great post though.

lol

Rumour has it that there are going to be 4 spartans - (dots in the visor?)

The dots in the visor are just flashes off the light. We know this because: the size of the flashes arent constant. And the placement isnt constant too. It looks too much of a flash then an 'incoming message beeper'.

A story was leaked that Halo 3 was going to be a MMORPG

Leaked - meaning its not offical my friend.

Putting all this together, I have a feeling

Just a feeling? That isn't enough evidence that this will happen though.

And I could, but I dont want to, go on. This isn't a good theory, sorry mate. Theres tons of holes/flaws in it.

fair enough, i did read the first line and hit reply but now ive read it

i feel the same way but would like to add something else

that elite guy has a name - the arbiter

i wouldnt start calling people kids when you dont know the title / name of one of the main characters in the game

Why? Surely a kid is more likely to know it.

Bungie cant do that because if they did ppl who got the game with no xbox live couldnt play campain then the game would be unplayable

So, you didn't read it either then? It said pretty clearly offline would be with AI bots.

Ha ha ha. Cheers RK for stucking up for me I felt like I was at school again and everyone had started picking on me. Boo Hoo.

But anyway, I know it's a flawed but fun idea but I still wasn't expecting that much flaming lol.

OK then looking at it with a fresh set of eyes then, I still think there should be a strong online co-op element in the game. Its true that most people do want this feature in the game, sorry to all you guys that like to play with yourself no pun intended.

So how about this then for a cut down idea.

4 player co-op play.
An option to be able to be able to increase the number of enemies as well as difficulty for online co-op.
Ability to play co-op with Bots if they are already developing them for multiplayer

That way the single player would remain the same as its going to be but we would still have the ability to play the game the more socialble way.

By the way, I say again, I'm just speculating. What were you expecting. I dont know -blam!- either just like the rest of ya :op

All you idiots saying,"Why play teh Halozorz 1f 0nly y0u can 0nly plyad with y0 fr13ndzorz!??!?!!!111!!?!". Actually read his post, because that's the exact same thing I thought until I read the part about the bots. And I don't think bots should be invincible. They should be slightly smarter than the enemy depending on the difficulty you set is on and have shields and health as you do.

  • 06.29.2006 6:37 AM PDT

Hated by many, confronted by none.

I don't think you're right. But it would be sweet to play 4 guys co-op over Live.

The idea is great.

You + 3 friends online, or You + 3 bots offline.

It makes perfect sence.

However, I think they will make Halo 3 more "original style" in that it is mostly on your own. I recon they might take the route of splinter cell and have two campains, single and co-op. That would work pretty well.
