Subject: A question about the Flood!

When a man sees his end he wants to know there was some purpose... to his life.

I know that the flood was released by accident by the forerunners a long time ago, they then subsequently fired the Halo rings and took refuge on shield planets throughout the Universe. My question is, if the rings were fired a long time ago by the Forerunners and killed all sentient life within the galaxy including the flood... why are the flood still on the rings "at all" starting with Halo CE... shouldn't the ring be void of sentient life and the flood?

Note**
I am reading the novels and I am currently on "Contact Harvest" so if my question is answered in one of the later novels I apologize.

Hope to hear back from someone soon!

Actually your are wrong.

The humans unleashed the Flood.

They combined a strange substance they found on a ship floating in space with these things that were like dogs.

It eventually evolved into the Flood.

IT was sent by the Precursors.

Also I must add. For all we know every galaxy outside of the Milky way could be infected...

Reach for Halo!

It just kills the food sources. Not the flood. The flood is a breed all their own...

and also this...

Ok! so then why were the Forerunners wiped out leaving all of their technologies behind?( I know some survived on Shield planets) I thought it was because they fired the rings and retreated to the shield world to contain the flood? am I wrong? why else would they fire the rings and hide on shields planets so long ago? because of the flood! so if they fired all of the rings and killed the floods food source, why didn't all of the flood die out on the rings in that galaxy over the thousands and thousands of years?

The forerunners did not take the flood serious until it had absorbed and assimilated nearly there entire civilization.

They also basically did a massive rage quit and suicide themselves. Aside from a few.

I personally think the master builder is the ancient evil.

Awesome! I can't wait to read the forerunner saga, but still. why were flood left on the ring after the forerunners fired them? I shall figure this out one day.

The humans unleashed the Flood.

If you want to get technical, actually the Forerunners unleashed the Flood. It simply evolved into what we know it as when Ancient Humanity discovered it.

The flood were kept on the ring as research in case the threat ever came back from outside of the Milky way.

Declan.S.J.Murphy

yes. there was some space dust wich was flood spores or something, and when they put it on dogs it improved their behavior. then they started mutatating, and becoming aggresive, and became the flood all over again. read the forerunner saga

I just bought the books so far from the Forerunner saga and I'm starting them real soon! hopefully this will clear all of this up. I just want to be 100% clear on everything before Halo 4 comes out so I can enjoy the campaign a little more.

Thanks guys!

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

This is actually one of the better question one can ask about Halo. It is far to often dismissed as a technical detail, one that should be overlooked because the intent remains the same.

Silencium might solve all the problems I am about to list, or just address some of them; give reasons for why it is as it is, casue right now, how the Forerunner handled the Flood is just sloppy and unfathomably inefficient, if one applies any logic on the matter. They're not at all on the level of their supposed intellect.

Here are some simple examples:
-If the Flood were able to survive within a Forerunner structure such as the Gas Mine, what's to say they didn't survive in caves or other Forerunner structurs; areas that were sheltered from the blast?
-Primordium reveals to us that the Forerunners have a device that is able to speed up the course of time within an area. This means that they could have checked how long it takes to starve a Flood spore.. I'm not going anywhere in particular with this point...
-If the Forerunner can index a human being, how come they didn't just index the Flood instead of keeping them in a lab? Or is the Flood spore too complex? Don't tell me it's made of patricles that are smaller and less readable than atoms...
"Deep in the bowels of Installation 05 things have gotten a little out of hand. I hope you packed extra underwear." ~Map description of Cold Storage. Is the plot written clumbsily just to make a Flood outbreak possible? Even if this map description or level in general isn't canon (is it?), Flood outbreaks happen too easy.
-And what if the Flood came back from outside the galaxy, how would they know?!
-Why did only fire the rings once, why not through a period of ten thousand years? And have a couple of trillion sentinels scan the galaxy. Make sure it starved. It is as if they aren't taking it seriously. "Fired? Oh.. Done! I'm going to bed.." ~The Didact. (only a joke).

I'm having a really hard time accepting that a teir 1 civilization could be as disorganized as they are made out to be as an excuse to drive the plot, but as I said, Silencium might bring answers for of all of that, give reason for everything, just make it fall in place, but right now, their protocols and choises don't make much sense.
