Per Audacia Ad Astra

I have noticed the dwindling activity of Aerospace.

You all remember this, right? The cool new program by which Bungie would lend AAA-class development resources to smaller devs?

Yeah, so how's that going?

The website is as it was at launch.
Last Twitter post was on November 18, 2011.

Your thoughts on the cause, Septagon? A slow stream of incoming submissions to vet and support? A temporary shift in priorities as Destiny nears completion? Or a lackluster start with the first game that has them reconsidering if this is a worthwhile endeavor?

Please discuss and thank you.

Definitely a fair weather program.

I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

I like mine. The orange and grey go together and the fabric feels nice.

Surely if Bungie Aerospace was slightly more involved and in touch with developers trying to get their feet off the ground, then we would here more news and have more content?
Why don't we have Aerospace developers giving us updates on some kind of feed if Aerospace was still alive?
The lack of anything since Harebrained studio's Crimson makes me think that Aerospace kicked the bucket months after its release.

This section of the leaked bungie contract with activison should clear this up:

Licensor's studio/development personnel shall be exclusively dedicated to working on the Products
during the Development Term (the "Exclusive Period"); provided, however, subject to the further
restrictions set forth in Sections 8.4 and 8.5, Licensor shall have the right to utilize no more than
seven (7) employees (but excluding any Key Members) and no more than ten (10) contractors to work
on and operate Bungienet (unless any Product is in a state of Critical Risk, then the immediately
foregoing numbers shall be reduced to no more than three (3) employees and no more than three (3)
contractors), (ii) no more than the greater of five percent of Key Members and one (1) Key
Member, and no more than the greater of five percent of other empioyees and one (1) other
employee, to staff, fund and operate a prototype team for a future Licensor action-shooter interactive
entertainment software product tentativeiy known as "l\/larathon" ("iVlarathon"), no more than ten
percent of the Key Member resources and no more than ten percent of all other
employees after the achievement of at least Three Hundred Seventy Five Million Dollars ($375,000,000)
in cumulative Operating Income to continue to staff, fund and operate a prototype team for Marathon or
otherwise engage in work on other Licensor projects or business activities, (iv) no more than twenty five
percent of the Key Member resources and no more than twenty five percent of all other

Basically it says that employees can only work on destiny, marathon, and bungie.net. It makes no mention of aerospace, which leads me to believe it is dead.

Nice find! That certainly seems damning for Aerospace.

However, it's worth noting here that Aerospace, IIRC, was registered as a separate company (here's the filing). Depending on how the ownership structure is set up, Bungie Aerospace Corporation may not actually be a part of Bungie, LLC -- and only Bungie, LLC is party to the contract, not Aerospace.

It doesn't look good for Aerospace, but it's not yet a certainty that it's been doomed.

Key

Here's what's going to happen:

They're not doing anything public with Aerospace until Destiny is RELEASED. Not announced. Released.

Then, once it's been out for a month or two, they're going to come out with this new game they've been working on with Harebrained Schemes. They'll have all this success from Destiny, great reviews coming in, and then once the gaming industry is still wobbling from the first hit, they'll jostle 'em some more with this gruesome upper cut to the jaw that is the second Aerospace game.

But this game isn't going to be an iPad exclusive. It's not going to be an anything exclusive. It's going to be on the iOs with different versions for iPhone and iPad. Likewise on Android. It's going to be on Steam, and XBLA, and PSN, and available on WiiWare with "localized" controls for each that make sense and don't ruin the game. It's going to be the biggest indie release since Super Meat Boy.

The promotions are going to be something like "From the team that brought you the [obscure stat about Crimson sales] game Crimson. Here's _________. [catchprase/tagline]". And it's going to be widespread. It's going to be featured on all it's mediums' respective front pages.

Then, by the time those two hype trains even begin to fizzle into the negative direction as far as sales go.... BOOM!

Comet #1.

Well they funded a not very fun flash game copy... so I can understand why it isn't very active...

+1 for you good sir.

I think it's going well. I also think that when Bungie went dark, everything went dark, so public activity went to a minimum.

There is no greater catharsis than arguing on the Flood.

It's funny thinking back to how far people blew it up. Then again, we don't have much of a better idea with Destiny, now do we?

I think the problem is that Aerospace was revealed to the public and the possible developers at the same time. It seems that Harebrained Schemes were the only ones who knew about it. So with Aerospace revealed a year and four months ago the first game(s) will probably come out in the next six months or so.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

If I remember correctly, Bungie or urk sent out a tweet saying that it was still up and running and they were just not ready to announce anything yet. Hmm, sounds familiar . . .

The mail sack is open guys, this is the perfect time to hammer it with Areospace-related questions.
