Why would Bungie not want to house such discussion on their site? It seems that many things worth discussing are thoughtlessly prohibited here. That isn't good policy.

Why and how did you then agree to the conditions of your membership if you thought them incorrect or unacceptable?
Why do you think that people actually read them?

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

You're correct. I interpreted your usage of "agree" as being synonymous with "comply". My mistake and my apologies. As long as a member is compliant with the terms of the agreement (which is the term I got focused on) then their opinion of the terms is irrelevant.

But to consent to an agreement when you do not agree with the conditions... that's not much of an agreement, is it? It's more of a resignation to comply, not a consent to agree.

Well, you can use whatever terminology you like. Hopefully, the rules will be relaxed around here in future. Of all the other online communities of which I've been a member, none has been so overbearing concerning what its members can and cannot discuss as this one. Heck, I've even known fundamentalist Christian ones which are more relaxed.

He may not want to pay, but he does because he is agreeing to comply with the US government, I still don't see how paying taxes goes against his statement.

I see what you're saying, and I may be partially wrong. However, I see the complaints about the rules here as recommendations for change. If looked at from that view, then the taxes argument works. While you agree to follow the rules (pay taxes), you still feel that there are better ways to run the forums and the rules can be adjusted (political adjustment for lower taxes).

No one was arguing that there shouldn't be people who complain about the rules.

Unless Recon thinks the government shouldn't tax the public to generate revenue, I don't see a parallelism. Just because you don't enjoy it, doesn't mean you disagree with it.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

Let me just post a section of the rules outlining whether or not we should talk about illegal substances on Bnet.

3. Play nice, don't be a jerk.

- Use common sense. This is a video game developer's website. Keep your posts on-topic and "safe for work". The further you stray the more you'll tempt a ban.
- Respect your fellow members, or at least tolerate them publicly. Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated, even if they probably deserve it.
- "Spam" is prohibited. (What counts as spam?)
- Do not post about any illegal substances or activities.
- Do not post false information or mislead other forum-goers. Yes, even if it is funny.
- Do not post spoilers or even pretend spoilers without clearly marking them.
- Do not bypass the profanity filter. (Helpful Link)
- New threads should encourage a discussion among the community; please be mindful of that when you create threads.

I am not sure you are aware but if Bungie allows illegal things to start going on there is a possibility that the site would be shut down due to illegal discussion and other things. People could plot all kinds of illegal things if Bungie didn't enforce legal discussion only.

Again, it's not illegal to discuss what sort of recreational drug use ought to be legal.

I think people are questioning the sense of these rules. It isn't that they're unaware of them. Incidentally, I don't know why talking about whether, say, the use of can.nabis should be legal is not "safe for work".

I can see where you're coming from. Usually, when someone says something that's not "safe for work", many people automatically assume: drugs, murder, extortion, etc.

Even where I used to work, we were taught to keep it professional. That meant no talking about anything illegal, keeping a mature vibe and being an overall good person. Many of the things that were told to us in training was common sense: Don't insult others, don't do anything illegal, etc.

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

We are on a website for a video game. There is no need. It is also discussion of illegal activities.

Discussions of illegal substances invariably leads to "well I partake in the substance, legal or not" which is a post about committing a crime, endorsing criminal activity, or supporting/encouraging illegal activity.
What if you live in Amsterdam and you talk about smoking pot? Or is it because Bungie is an American company we can't post about committing activities which are illegal in America? (serious question)

Not all discussion on this website concerns video games. Given your title, you should be aware of this by now.

What do you mean by "discussion of illegal activity"?

Because they're agreeing to them and they're still viewable after accepting them. It's your fault if you don't.

Perpetual Ninja in training.

"If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe."

DMH

Los Paranoias

It goes more like this for Bungie:

They want to give us what we want, because it makes us happy, and keeps us with them. They also want to look good while giving us what we want. So, to do this, they make rules for us to follow. The rules are pretty gray, and sometimes we can bend them, so for the most part, it isn't all that bad a situation.

You see, the thing is, they had to make a couple rules that would make sure they didn't look bad. Now, of course, these rules can't be part of a "gray area" type situation like a lot of the other rules. It just wouldn't work, because these rules are going to make sure Bungie doesn't get into any sort of trouble with the law.

One of these rules pertains to illegal drugs. Bungie is smart, and they know that anyone who is seriously into illegal substances are associated with trouble (for the most part) and are also very VERY smart. These people could use their forums as a means of communication about selling or buying, what is good product and where to get it.

As someone who grew up around this world, I already know that Bungie would be at terrible risk, solely due to the fact that this web site acts like a social networking site. So, Bungie, also taking note of this, decides that, "let's cut our losses, and not risk ANYTHING at ALL, and ban discussion of any illegal substances."

This goes along with the "better safe than sorry" approach any serious business should take when letting the internet dictate how this business appears. Now, I know, it's unfair, because when you were 12 or 13 you made an account, and now you really like it here, and ever since Jimmy down the street smoked you up with a J, you feel like you know everything about wide clef kush. But, you don't.

This is Bungie Dot Net. If you can't get it in your head at this point that here is not the place to discuss these things, they it's probably best that you leave. I don't see it ever changing, and I completely agree. I don't wanna talk about this stuff with you dopes, you all know jack -blam!- about it anyway.

To summarize, Bungie has a name to withhold in the public eye, and they can't have that stuff cluttering up what the public sees. Also, talking about the legalization of illegal drugs is considered political, and that's also against the rules, because THOSE topics always end with someone else breaking ANOTHER rule about being respectful to other users.

So, put your big boy pants on, and go find another place to talk about all that Jazz. If it's too damn inconvenient for you, you must not have wanted to talk about it all that badly in the first place.

  • 11.03.2012 9:32 PM PDT

Why is the tone here so damn hostile? My question was already answered on the first page.
