Subject: Getting into the game industry?

Hey, I am an aspiring writer and looking to follow through with my passion for games and to pursue a career in the field. I am looking to go to school for a degree in either game design or the more prominent one being creative writing. I am looking at Full Sail University due to the convenience factor of it being an online school and me being a father. Through research I have found mixed reviews and wanted to get the opinion both of Bungie and anyone in the community who has dealt with this school. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Chance

Don't judge a book by its cover, unless it has bacon on the cover, then it is a good book.

mind if I take up some ad space in your thread?....you don't? thanks man.

I am wanting to become an animator for a video game company, but I have really no "art talent" when it comes to drawing things. how important is that when it comes to animating. Also, what is a good way to learn how to animate if you have zero experience

...a challenger approaches

I, like yourself- Chance, am looking for a position as a writer in the video game industry once I have completed my degree at the university I'm attending. If the position comes down to it, I may see you in an arena for a fight to the death.

Good luck, chump- I mean- Chance.

Is there a position for 17 year old kid who lives across the country and goes to school and doesn't do anything but post on the forums sometimes but still gets paid because he's a pretty cool guy? If so... can I get the application?

OT
You should probably write something first, actually complete a novel, even if you think it's pointless.
Try to come up with a really amazing, original idea, then do your best at writing it.
Personally I don't think I'll ever make money by writing, but after several years (and a Google Docs folder full of crap)I finally have confidence in my writing skills.
It's the old Thomas Edison "1000 ways to not make a light bulb" idea :)

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”

Mind if I also take up some ad space in your thread? You do? Oh, umm...here's $20. Good? Okay, I'll continue.

I am pursuing a career in Security and Risk Analysis focusing on information and cyber security and was wondering if any security experts in the games industry could shed some light on their work. I am not asking for technical details, but rather means to an end--how can someone like me become someone like you?

Should I actively pursue certificates outside of school, and if so, which ones would be most valued in the games industry? How does security differ when working in the games industry than in other businesses? I do not expect to land a job right out of college working in security for a game developer, but where should I start? How might a college undergraduate like myself gain meaningful experience in the field? Most professionals that I have talked to have recommended consulting as a great way to enter the field as you gain a lot of experience in different settings in a relatively short period of time. Do gaming companies often hire consultants to perform security audits?

Also, hi Urk, nice to see you back.

The name's Ian, Game Designer at Whisper Game Studios, very off-and-on Bungie.net visitor and avid Bungie fan overall. Message me if you wish.

I've been secretly working my way into the industry. Slowly but surely. Met a few Bungie celebs and others in the industry (not in my field of choice really, but something interesting nonetheless). As for writing? I tried that path to begin with. I learned it was more a hobby than anything. I'm 19 now teaching Game Design at a teen tech camp at University of Miami. Key to get in the industry is know your stuff and know your people. Connections are the golden seal I believe to getting in the industry. Unless you're a child prodigy. In which case, just stick a product out there and you'll be snapped up faster than a $100 bill out in the open.

Best suggestion for you now, go to as many conferences (NOT conventions) as you can and meet up with as many people as you can and maintain those contacts. Other than that, it's all just being good at your work.

Thank you for the advice. I have been looking at conferences and would attend if I could afford it. Most are out of my area, and the ones that I could get to are expensive (S4, which I really wanted to go to, charged nearly $1000). I have been talking to some people at Penn State and I'm trying to get a school-sponsored trip, but I am not too sure that this will happen.

XBL Ambassador, Graphic Designer, Maker of Halo panoramas and full 360 degree views. Halo Panoramas

If that Graphic Designer position is still around when I graduate from Full Sail in January, I'm going to apply. Even if I don't get chosen I will at least know they gave me a chance to make a go for it.
