Bansheeownz, I already know your views from previous posts *correct me if I'm wrong*, but I disagree with starting with a weak, biased weapon, namely the SMG.
I agree that weapons need to be equally balanced, discluding power weapons.
However, starting with a close-range weapon promotes weapon whoring and luck through the spawning system. Because you start with a close-range weapon, you're not going to fair well against someone who's decent with a sniper or battle rifle if they spawn nearer to one.
It also biases your personal choice of weapons towards a single one, creating a disadvantage and advantage for different people, from the start! What I mean is, somebody may personally like close-ranged weapons more than long-range weapons, and vise versa. If you start with a biased weapon, you're shifting towards one side's specialty.
That is why I suggest (and always have suggested) starting with an all-around nuetral weapon, one that is equally good in every situation, but not the best in any.
The pistol from Halo 1 filled this position, although it could be argued that it was overpowered. While I personally disagree with that, a 4-shot pistol would work just fine as the "balancing" weapon I described.
/rant over. Feel free to rant back. :)
