I just got finished with The Fall of Reach and loved it. I want to read more definitely, but I've heard that the next novel in the series, The Flood, is basically Halo: CE in text form. I've heard there is some backstory to it and wanted to know if it's okay to skip The Flood and move right on to First Strike. From what I've heard The Flood didn't get great reviews and I'm not much of a reader in general so this book probably won't be able to keep my attention. (I have played Halo: CE so I know the story from the game) Is it safe to skip The Flood and move on to First Strike?

I wouldn't skip The Flood if I were you. It is a great book. Introduces new characters and it tells the story from an Elites perspective on how he wants to get revenge on a demon that is on the Halo ring.

The Flood, while being a good book, is not necessary for the Halo lore.

Unlike the other Halo novels, you won't be missing too much.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

The Flood has fantastic backstory. It really adds even more depth to the amazing story that Halo CE had.

That said, I still think it's a skippable read as there are other more important novels in line (First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx, Cryptum, Glasslands...), but I wouldn't forget about it. Read it when you have the time eventually.

@Spartan Okay good to know, looks like I'll be skipping it.

@Spider Chief My friend told me that it includes a story of that Elite that wants to kill Master Chief, like how he set up that room in the Silent Cartographer with the Hunters then the stealth Elites. While it probably is a cool story, it's just a backstory and if I had the time I would read it but I just want to read about the main Halo lore that I do not know.

Yeah. Skip it, and come back to it at a later date.

I'd focus on the Forerunner Trilogy (Crytptum, Primoridum, Silientium) and the Kilo-Five trilogy first. But you MUST read Ghosts of Onyx before you start the Kilo Five trilogy (Glasslands, The Thursday War, and a book that will come soon).

So to get ready for the Halo 4 story...
Cryptum
Primordium
Silientium
---------------------------------
Ghosts of Onyx
Glasslands
The Thursday War
To be announced.

You can swap the order of the chunks, but the books within those chunks must be read in order.
