Straight up.
Halo 3's were fun for their time. There is absolutely no disputing that. However, they ultimately became incredibly dull in both quality and quantity. By the end of 2009 (besides customs dying with Modern Warfare 2's release) customs became nothing but the same thing from Ghostbusters to Predator. Fun gametypes for the first few times, but in the end so dull. Fat Kid became so predominant it just wasn't and still isn't fun anymore.
Now fast forward to Reach where there are hundreds of unique customs to play that are fun and much more fast paced and cool. Slide is a favorite of mine for Infection. Then there's the Insane gametypes like Chess. Offering a whole new round of custom games fun and stupidity. Armor Walkers was another favorite that I loved more than so many others. I haven't even scratched the surface with stuff like CTF or Slayer variants. So much potential that people were never able to get into. THAT is the bad about customs. It took people with real coordination to get others to play in big lobbies.
In the end population was what changed customs for the worst.
Halo Reach has superior custom games. Fact.Halo3s custom games are amazing and the somewhat limited forge got people to think of crazy creative ways to make a map.Halo 3 also had 3 forge maps sandbox(which was 3 in its own) foundry and avalanche creating a huge variety of feels while every Halo Reach map is made on forge world which results in maps feeling all like plastic after a while.
