Bungie--If matchmaking is already implemented, then just think of this post as an idea for some possible "Halo 3 PC" or something. Or if matchmaking isn't complete yet, then I hope you'll consider this.

I always thought it would be a good idea to have dedicated servers rather than matchmaking. Why? Several reasons. But before I begin...I would like to let everyone know that I am a hardcore console gamer, so even though I prefer servers over matchmaking, I am not biased towards computer gaming. And now with my idea:

First off, implementing servers into Halo 3 would get rid of ranks. Why? Simple. Imagine two people are Live friends. Imagine they both are on a server that is blocked by a password, thus giving them time for boosting and whatnot. Tons of cheaters would use this to their advantage, would they not? Therefore, if servers were implemented, then ranks would have to be completely forgotten.
I don't think anybody would mind, though. I mean after all the damn signatures I see that say "a rank is nothing but a digital number next to my name," you'd think those people wouldn't care about the fate of ranks. So let's just remove them if we're gonna have dedicated servers. Also, removing ranks for lower a modder's morale, and would give cheaters nothing to accomplish by cheating. It would make things ten times more fair.

Secondly...dedicated servers would make modding useless. I'm not exactly sure if this works the same way, but on halo PC, modders can only use their mods on a server they're hosting. Therefore, in a dedicated server-based online game, a modder couldn't just join another server and plague anybody else's fun. His cheating toys are restricted to his own space, no one else's. If Halo 3 had servers, I imagine the same rules would apply.

Third...quitters, betrayers, and delevellers won't be a problem either. Delevellers are pointless right off the bat, because there wouldn't be any ranks in the first place. Betrayers would also be rendered useless IF Halo 3 were to adopt Halo PC's banning system; the Halo PC rule on dedicated servers is, if you betray too much in a given amount of time, you are temporarily banned from the server you're playing on. And as for quitters...so what if they quit? Playing on a server is an open game; anybody can join or quit whenever they please. Before you know it, when somebody quits, another person will join.

Lastly...dedicated server lists are not "more difficult" to use than the matchmaking system. Hey--if my 8-year-old brother learned to use a server list, then so can you. It's not hard, people. You click on "Live," then you click on "join game," and click ona server that meets your requirements. Or just fliter them out so you get to pick from a select few. Not hard at all.

What do you guys think? I'm not saying this will change Bungie's mind or anything....just asking for opinions here.

Don’t get mad if I flame you because you cannot spell, or because my three year old has better grammar and etiquette than you.

Unless they have already done someting like this I would say yes its too late, they have been working on Halo 3 since Halo 2 shipped, so unless we want an unacceptable game delay I would have to ventrure to say its too late.

ALso the reason I think they do the Host thing is because think of the number of servers it would take to host all the games everyone is playing.

YOUCH!

matchmaking makes halo unique. u wouldnt want to change that

  • 06.29.2006 6:27 PM PDT

you want to control a server browser with a controller.

that would be too hard.

I like MM. You tell it to find a game and you go get something to drink.

EDIT: There is no clicking involved. You are using a controller. I like using server browsers on the computer. It is much easier. But not on xbox. no way.

I see your point, but not every player needs to host a server at the same time. Most people join other servers.

A lot of times, on Halo PC, the player count is around 2500 while the server count is at around 150, because each server has about 8 people playing in it.

I'm really kind of torn on this, actually..

On one hand, I liked the Matchmaking system that Bungie implemented. It worked, and it worked pretty well. I'm not sure how keen I was of the ranking, though.

For Halo 3 to have a built-in server browser, however, would be pretty awesome. I wonder if Bungie would somehow be able to implement both? Maybe the main means of joining an online game would be via the server browser, but then as a side option near the server filters you would also have an optimatch option that would place you in a server that the system chooses based on your game preferences, rank and whatnot.

It's not too hard. Use the A button like three times and you've mastered the server list.

I LIKE SERVER BROWSERS. But only on the PC. Using it on the xbox would be too hard.

Try again. Have you played Halo PC? It takes like 2 minutes to find a host that actually works because they are all behind unconfigured routers and the hosts don't know it. MM doesnt need routers to be configured. I would rather wait 2 minutes letting it find a game than having to find it myself. You want a server browser? Get Halo PC and Halo 2 PC when it comes out.

First off... Halo 3 for PC is a LONGGGG way off, Halo 2 has just recently made it's debut appearance that it will become available via Windows Vista, Hell, even Halo 3 is a little ways off.

Secondly, There are ranked and unranked gametypes in the match making playlists over XBox LIVE. If you don't want to play a ranked game where there may be cheaters, play the unranked... If you want to play a gametype where you can't play it in unranked, play it in the ranked games, and if someone happens to cheats, just quit, it's JUST that simple. Rank doesn't matter right?

Thirdly, you go on about how ranks are so unimportant, so, if your claim is true for yourself, you should have absolutely NO problem backing out of games because of unfair/dishonest gameplay; oh, and all those other crappy situations such as betraying, etc, etc. If the end result of the game means you will lose no matter what, you have every right to quit, and it is logical to do so. There's no bungie handbook that says when someone quits because they're upset that they should be penalized, that's stupid, REALLY stupid, and I can't stress that enough.

Being temporarily banned for killing someone so many times? Er, I will agree, this sounds logical, but you'd be surprised how many times I've been betrayed in a game on accident where my team still won. You've also got to take into consideration that there are bugs that cause you to "suicide" and "betray" someone when you don't mean to, the freak glitches if you will, which is most likely the reason bungie did not implement this already.

In the end, dedicated servers would just be stupid, plain and simple. Halo 2 is one of thee most unique online multiplayer games with it's party system as it is, and bungie has done a fantastic job. Changing it would only take apart what they've built upon the first two games.

LASTLY, the biggest solution to cheaters... Play some game on XBox LIVE, send some friend invites, and makes some parties. It's not hard to do, and it will save you from all the betrayals, suiciders, cheaters, etc; from coming on your team. Add a bunch of people on your list that play your gametypes, and send some invites, that's the best thing you can do to avoid cheating.

Enjoy the game for what it is, and quit trying to change what it is.... Everyone points out the imperfections, but people don't realize that Halo 2 really is a great game. Every game has its flaws, but c'mon? Give bungie a break.

I seriously doubt Bungie will get rid of their pride and joy match making. Im not a fan of it all. I like to choose maps/gametypes I like, I dont want matches/maps I dont like shoved down my throat. Matchmaking sacrifices Choice. Everyone keeps saying Server lists are too difficult to use. Not true at all. It gives you more choice. Just chose from a list of maps/gametype you like, than press search A server list will appear. Click on a server from the list and you enter the server. That's it! It only takes a few seconds. Matchmaking takes minutes.

I'll list the disadvantages I find on matchmaking followed by the servers advantages.

1. Quitters - For matchmaking once someone quits, they are gone the entire match. Which leaves one team at an advantage another at an disadvantage the entire match. This just leads to more quitting on the team with the disadavantage. (can you blame them?)

For servers if someone quits it's no big deal. Someone will take their place or the host will force teams even. (You can even vote to force teams even.)

2. Lag - BTB lags 1/6matches. What do you expect when bungie uses the gamers connection? It's inevitable to to get connected with someone who cant host that many people

Servers are ment to hold alot of connections. You can see if the host has a good connection when you see it in the list of servers. Therefore, very rarely do you go into a game lagging.

3. Bridging/standby- Users try to minipulate the connections to make them self host, and when they are host using standby.

With dedicated servers this is not an issue.

4. Having to put up with jerks, betrayers, etc- You know those jerks who dont betray you, but they do everything they can to annoy you. You mute them, but they still shoot at you, get in your way, etc.. You have to deal with them the entire match.

On servers the host can just kick them out, or you can vote them out. Problem solved.

5. Choice - Currently on matchmaking you have basically no choice. You click a playlist and you are forced to play maps or gametypes you dont like. This leads to quiting. It takes forever for matchmaking to find a match. The average matchmaking wait is anywhere from 30 sec-1minute. In BTB it is not unusual to be waiting 5 minutes for a match! It takes far too long to create your own match and invite players. What if you dont have a good enough connection to host 16 players? Too bad? No choice!

On servers you can see a list of servers which show what gametype and map they are playing. You can filter all kinds of options. You are not forced to create a custom match, and wait for people to answer your invites. Just filter the servers based on what gametype/map you like, press search (takes only seconds to search) and chose a server. Just 3 simple steps. No waiting at all. The longest you have to wait is 10 sec.

6. 16+ player matches (could've gone with lagging, but it's a big enough point to get it's own category) - How the heck is Bungie going to leech off gamers connection once there are 16+ player matches? They will have to use dedicated servers.

That's all I can think of now. There are probally alot more. For those complaining about about elite players being on servers with noobs. That happens now anyway. You really think if another elite player is on your team, that the other elite player isnt going to own the noob? That's silly. Plus with derankers, flawed ranking system, The matchmaking Rank system isnt a good determiner of skill. Especially when it comes to team based games. You are going to get owned by a better player no matter what. That's part of the fun of gaming online, you wouldnt improve if you didnt. This is not communism, we shouldnt be forced to play with equals all the time.

We should at least have both. Maybe Matchmaking for ranked, server list option for unranked. Best of both worlds.

I think that if Bungie is going to keep matchmaking, which they probably will, then they shouldn't show people what rank they are. It would cut down on the number of people cheating simply to raise their rank cause they see it as some sort of accomplishment. The ranking system that is in place is a great idea just don't let people see what it is.

"Have I played Halo PC?" Yes, I play it 2-3 hours daily, actually. I have no problem finding a server. I just pick a random one and have fun, because all the gametypes kick ass.

Everyone who knows what dedicated servers are would want them. Most kids here are 5-15 and would not know any other online games besides H2. Because they have no idea what dedicated servers are, they would choose MM. This thread is pointless.
