There has been a thread created in another forum that raised an interesting idea in my mind. Classifications for forum contributers. The start of that thread was ICEMAN ASSASSIN

Based on Iceman's analysis of forum contributers in his declassified "Halo 3 Forum Survival Guide," I believe we have something good going here. Similar to the way Xbox Live let's their members choose what gamer "type" they are, such as: Recreation, Pro, Underground, etc.... Perhaps Bungie should consider allowing bungie.net members to choose what class contributer to the forums they are in. Iceman has already given us a base of titles for each class, there may be room for adjustments. However, these titles would be sufficient to start a classifcation for each member to choose from.

The following is what was posted on that thread. I thought this would be a good topic for The Septagon. I have already received ICEMAN ASSASSIN's permission to repost here. It's kind of comical as well so whether or not you agree with the idea of classification, at least you'll get a good chuckle out of these title descriptions.

- The casual: This forum user visits H3 forum when bored. He'll swing by, see whats goin on, then leave to his usual forum. nothing special here

Mating Call: "Read this thread"

- The dedicated: This forum user can always or most often be found in the halo 3 forum. They're active, like to discuss, and sometimes gets into arguements. if you wanna know the ropes, these ppl will (sometimes) be glad to help you out.

Mating Call: "I have a question about the ark and the forerunners....can anyone help me?"

-The flamers: Avoid at all costs. These guys will see a thread and no matter what the topic; start flaming. sometimes its out of humor, sometimes out of spite- if you get in an arguement with one of these, you will be fried

Mating Call: "Read my new theory about this detail in the trailor!!"

-The intellectuals: These are the guys who hang around waiting for a good discussion. they like to play devils advocate and only add fuel to the fire of your topic. respectful, and knowledable, they are always a great addition to any thread discussion

Mating Call: "I would like to discuss the bible's relevance to Halo 3...."

-The die hard fanboy: Stay away. if you should stumble across one of these, you will be flamed if you so much as question whatever idiotic and unfeasible fanboy dreams they have of this game. usually young and not even old enough to have facial hair, these species travel in packs and usually turn a well thought thread into a flame fest.

Mating Call: "Hey, did someone mention there will be no spartans in Halo 3?"

- The Clueless: One of the most abundant species on the halo 3 forum. They will flood in and make a new thread about an old topic that is clearly visible 5 TIMES on the front page. quick to get flamed, these members cant seem to have a long survival rate cuz theyre constantly eaten by flamers.

Mating Call: "YO GUYS, CHECK OUT THIS BEST BUY RELEASE DATE!!!"

-The Clowns: These guys seem to tend to their own. thought they dont travel in packs, if one is in trouble, more are bound to show up. Their humor is great, and often mar a well thought out thread with something so blatently off topic and hilarious, everyone forgets about everything (except the thread creator) and has a good laugh. this species knows how survive the jungle of the halo 3 forum.

Mating Call: "The forerunners were actually african-american jews who lived in switzerland to build the ark for a covenant cook-out!!!.......kosher of course!!"

-The Moderator: The top of the food chain in the halo 3 forum. These members prowl around, enforcing the way of the land. however, their interest lie elsewhere other than whiny fanboys or people who think they're comedians. quick to lock a thread, these predators are known to ban on SIGHT. should you ever come across one..........DONT MOVE............maybe they wont see you..................

Mating Call: "Hey did anyone see that new off-topic thread ICEMAN made???"

so that leaves only one question: Which one are you?

If you feel this would be good for bungie.net please reply with your positive feedback. Thanks.

I'm not sure how such a system would actually contribute to the site. Everyone's either a member, moderator, Bungie employee, or "special member." I don't think further breaking down the member rankings will do anything.

I don't fit into any of those categories.

Well, your thread makes for a good and interesting read (and funny, sort of like how Dilbert Comics are funny to cubicle workers), but beyond that I don't see how it could have a practical application in the actual forums....

Interesting idea though.

Well, it's not really an idea of a ranking so much as it is an idea of identity. Allowing members to choose their own class would give them a greater sense of identity amongst other forum users. Also, it would give forum users an idea of the another users persona, the kind of person they're debating with.

Ofcourse the list of titles is not in anyway a conclusive list. Bungie would create whatever classes they see fit to incorporate in the classification system. This list is simply a good base to generate an idea of what kind of classes to incorporate.

Why does one need a title to describe how one acts on a particular forum? How does this actually benefit the community?

Read about the Forgotten Spartan I Program
Butane: To protect the world from devastation!
sir_brilliant: To unite all people within our nation!
Rainman89: To denounce the evils of truth and love!
sir_brilliant: To extend out reach to the stars above!
SpaceGhostFlyer: Jessie!
Butane: James!
sir_brilliant: Team Rocket blasting off at the speed of light
Butane: Surrender now or prepare to fight
sir_brilliant: Meowth, that's right!

I will never trust anyone whose name is in all caps. And I think that would be a waste of time for peoplw who should be working on halo 3, not making halo 3 fans feel better.

More importantly: How does a title give one a sense of identity?

Only the paranoid will survive!

I see no reason why not to implement it. I mean, if it helps add anything to the site I'll be grateful. It's sort of like the avatars. What do they add? Nothing but a small bit of association between the member and the image. These would be the same. What's the point in having a signature? It helps express a persons unique side. I mean, there are plenty of things on this site that don't really serve a purpose, but the make the site that much better.

EDIT: Hmm. How does a signature give a sense of identity? How does a name give a sense of identity? Well, your name can either be something serious, something only a hardcore Bungie fan might know about, something funny, any of those. They help show who you are. For instance, I could sarcasticly(sp? I'm tired =[) use a title that is completely contradicting my personality to express who I am. Or I could take it totally seriously and put something like "Casual Member". It seems to me like people are trying sop hard to find flaws in this.

EDIT: Edit: And I fail to see how Achronos and the web team doing one small (Well, I assume it isn't that hard compared to some other ideas out there) change such as this would delay Halo 3 at all. If you can prove me wrong, or if Achronos or anyone can, I'll withdraw.

Then we'd have "The Clowns" going after "The Intellects" and "The Trolls" ganking both of them when their backs are turned.

All I'm trying to say is that I believe it would cause more harm than good.

I disagree, although you may have a point. Mabye I just don't want to believe that it has really come to that. Denial roxx0rz.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

He is.

You're right about that. But we aren't talking about signatures. We are talking about a small word that attempts to define people. It doesn't actually help. Besides, if we want a sense of identity, doesn't it defeat the purpose of having multiple people that fall under the same title? If anyone can pick what title they want, maybe someone with no idea of how to carry on a philosophical discussion will pick the name "Intellectual" to sound smart. And to build on DMB's point, we'd have plenty of "class-fighting." "Intellectuals" would probably hold some contempt for "non-Intellectuals," since they wouldn't be as "smart."

It's a self-defeating feature which is more likely to cause harm than good, if it could even provide any good at all.

Y'know It would be interesting if you could filter the forum index by user classifications. I don't really know how we could label every user on bungie.net though. Can't do it by hand and an automagic class labeling script would take some time to develop. I know other forums have classes but their class systems are usually determined by post count...sucky.

Also (sort of off-topic BUT) I always thought it would be cool if moderators could spotlight worthy topics by marking them. That way users could filter the index and just find topics we marked.

What he's suggesting is that the members select their own classification. I do agree that having a member noticed for their good deeds (karma system anyone?) would be a great addition, because I figure the people that would attain a "high level" wouldn't be the type to look down on those below him. But what do I know?

Also (sort of off-topic BUT) I always thought it would be cool if moderators could spotlight worthy topics by marking them. That way users could filter the index and just find topics we marked. That's a pretty good idea. All of the "Threads of Interest" can be filtered to the top...

wow.......i only did this so we could add a sense of "identity" to the forum, as well as get a good laugh?

there are plenty of people who would consider themselves "clowns" of the forum, as well as a lot who would wear the title of "flamer" with pride

i kinda did that thread in the Halo 3 forum as a joke tho, but when i saw people were getting into it, i thought "hey, maybe we DO have something here"

It allows us to form pre-conceived ideas of who people are by thier titles. That way, we can use our Bungie.net stereotypes to decide if we like or dislike someone before we even talk to them.
