Recon I know the ninjas can't go anonymous.. but then I must say to myself can you really call yourselves Ninjas?

I keed.

Maybe they do. Who's to say that Recon and DMB don't have another account where they do their venting without having to be bombarded by the rest of us.

But isn't part of being a ninja being a deadly-killing machine of the shadows? Normal posters don't do that.. often.

I’m glad to see the amount of discussion involved about this topic. I just checked this thread about 8 am this morning and there were only about 17 replies. Now only about 3-4 hours later there are over 70 replies. Good thing, good things, muzzle muzzle.

This idea was never intended to promote prejudices and superiority complexes in any way. I can see that this is a concern by most of your comments. Yes, some may feel that it wouldn’t tremendously, positively contribute to the bungie.net community. However, I believe that the freedom of choice involved with this idea has not been given due consideration. What I mean is; members choose their class. If they want to be considered a “Fan-boy” or “Casual” and know what the repercussions may be, then that’s their choice.

Let’s face it. We can’t avoid prejudices. We see it even now. Users may be biased to another user because of certain ideas they have. If a person chooses to be that way they are only hurting themselves. Additionally, the thought of classes to identify ourselves would give us opportunity to understand how to respond or react to certain users based on the class they chose. For example: If you are ridiculed by a “Flamer” then you may not choose to pursue the debate if you are a “Casual” forum user. On the other hand, if an “Intellectual” sees fit to bring up a vital point in the discussion involving a “Flamer” then he can do so.

I know that this may all be relatively unnecessary, but you’ll be surprised how much identity is important to individuals.

I must continue my work now. I look forward to reading further comments when I return.

The Casual.

The Flamer in second.

Skillet was here and referred to himself in the third person.

It's amazing...I was just thinking of Trigun when I read Recon's post one page back. And he's right! Vash is cool.

Now to get back on topic...I think the idea is cool. but you could also encorporate this into your own groups...right now. All you have to do is change your group's ranks. And if you would want to go further...simply make several ranks under these diffarent "catagories" only make them all with the same powers and then have members choose when they join.

A few reasons.

Additional accounts are not encouraged.
It would be a bad example to set.
If the purpose was to misbehave, then choosing us as a moderator was a mistake.
If we did misbehave, we would be risking attack from The Soul.
Too much effort and trouble.

For me, if I am going to be judged, I am going to be judged for who I am and what I do, as myself. I cannot imagine having an alternate personality online.

I'm not saying you guys would be the ones making the zomg bungie is teh suckz type threads but let's be honest, people see that white text posting frequently they go flocking to it like poo on velcro. I figure it's gotta be hard to be scrutinized every time to you post, let's face it, you guys are mini celebrities on this site and anomanitity(however the hell you spell it) can be a blessing.

Hmm, well the mods do ban people. I guess that could be interpreted as killing right? And I doubt most people see the bans coming, so I guess that could also as be interpreted as coming from the shadows... right? lol.

But seriously, ninjas (and not just the forum kind) seem to be making a comeback in modern culture and society. I know a tons of smaller organisations (mostly at Uni -- like Safewalk, etc etc), who view ninjas as the epitome of coolness. Ninjas become their symbols, yet there is nothing ninja-ish about them...

It's almost as if the term 'ninja' is becoming a universal constant for something. I'm just not sure what that is exactly.

anyway, I really think the class idea would be a bad idea, now, as for changing "member" to
"awesome ninja-like epitome of coolness". That, I am all for.

I always say, being in the Bnet forum is like being borg. Newcomers are assimilated into the 'collective' with little hassle, and few individuals stand out to ruin the feeling of 'community'.

If we started having lots of crazy titles it would be like everyone said; there would be too much division among the forums.

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement
We're barely, we're just a collection of cells
Overrating themselves

Upon giving this further thought, I've changed my mind. Lets make roles. Sure it will divide us, but that should work out better in Bungie's long term goal of conquering the world.

Think about it, its not the large unified army that conquers you, its the little groups constantly picking at you until you no longer have the energy to defend yourself.

Only then will Bungie rule the world.

Good heavens no! I don't think that there is any such thing as a "simple member".

All of the members of this site are each here for their own unique and individual reasons. But what should cause a member to "stand out" in a positive manner is the exact same thing that causes the negative members to stand out. The individual's actions and statements.

Having special "labels" is just fashion. It allows people to say, "I'm in group X and they are in group Y. They suck and we rock." There's no benefit in such divisions on this site.

Each member has the same chance to be exceptional, or infamous, or to blend in as any other member. But in a text-based environment, words are what we have to work with.

We moderators don't "stand out" because we're somehow "better". I am no better or no worse a member of this fan community than anyone else. I would like to think that I am known and people have formed their opinion about me because of the words that I've put to the right of my avatar, not because of the color of the text or because of words between my membername and my avatar.

I can't help if people chose to judge me on those criteria, but I make it clear that I don't look at them when deciding about any other member.

That's true...but weather you admit it or not...your status as moderator makes you stand out much more than ANYBODY else on this forum. When you were a "member" you were probably known for your posts, name and signature...but not very many people noticed that I'm sure. Now, everybody recicgnises you for being a moderator...with white text and a custom avatar everybody knows what you are now. If you REALLY want to be regular and want to be known for your wisdom (which you obviousely have plenty of) you should convince Achronos to remove your custom avatar and that shiny text and just make you a moderator rank like every moderator in the groups are. This idea would help regular members like me be unique almost as much as you.

Its something that cannot be helped. So until Soul returns to us and is able to correctly moderate the forums, we will continue to have this hierarchy of members. I don't think its really a problem though, just seems like one.

Lets use Achronos as an example: he's a normal guy, works for bungie, and made bungie.net. He has full authority over everything in the website. So is it unfair for him to be just a normal member? Yes, because he has things with the website that he has to work on constantly to ensure it works flawlessly, which is, as we all see, a timeless job.

But remember the first thing i said? Normal guy. Just like the rest of us (well, some ladies too). The only difference is that he's got a special avatar and when he posts somewhere there's a special golden icon. The problem isn't with him, its with the people who act like flies attracted to the light.

The same works for mods. If you see a mod was the last one to post in a thread and its still open, people fly to the thread. Why? Because the mod's hold a higher status, aka, the light. Thus most people are attracted to it because they think its cool in some sort of way.

And in a way, it is. All of the mod's are great with the forums and are, as they should be, a source of information, help, and generally good conversation. They aren't mod's for nothing. Bearing all that in mind, its incredibly difficult to, on the one hand, recognize that they are just normal people too, and on the other, respect them for the fact that they are experienced and generally awesome on the forums.

The dichotomy is hard to appreciate, and even harder to become accustomed too. However, it is a struggle that every member on the forums, including the moderators (although the reasons for that are slightly different and have been mentioned already), bungie.net staff (the online staff), and even non-members.

Few people propose an idea with bad intentions. And none of us think you want to bring down Bungie.net in any way by proposing an idea that could possibly create problems. Regardless, if people are going to ruin something, there's no point in having it. It's the same principle as with the karma system. It's a great idea, but it has the potential to cause a large number of problems.

1) No matter how much anyone may try, no one can be individual just by having a certain title. Just because there are a handful of forum ninjas does not mean they are individuals. They are individuals when they converse with other members in a way that gives other members a slight idea of who that person behind that other computer screen might be. A title doesn't help in any way, shape, or form.

2) I'm more worried with the idea of "X members only." If members want to become part of a group or crowd, and thus be liked by certain people for some reason, they have to become who they are not. Plus many will see it as a status symbol. Especially with a rank like "Intellecual" or "Dedicated Member."

I know that this may all be relatively unnecessary, but you’ll be surprised how much identity is important to individuals.

I would completely agree with that. However, as I said above, special titles do not give people any true sense of identity, no matter how much they may think it does. And they especially don't when there are tens of thousands of other people who have the same title, trying to be individual.

I prefer "wise," personally. It sounds better to refer to Recon's post as his Words O' Wisdom than his Words O' Intellect.

Points well taken Mabian. I appreciate your feedback.

The point you made about "X members only" is definetly a problem I can see happening. Your comments lead me to understand that the problem isn't the idea but the way the majority might abuse it.

sigh...If only honesty, integrity and respect were a common part of all peoples personalities. Oh well, a sad but true reality of life I guess.
