But it could also show the hardcore dedication for Halo users. Just because you believe you waste too much time on b.net doesn't mean others shouldn't get a post counter. Get over your denial and you'll realize that post counters totaLLy rockS.

I would respectfully disagree.

The amount of "dedication" that someone has should not be linked to (possibly) a flood of high-numbered, low-content posts.

If the quality is there, the persons reputation is known, and it has nothing to do with how many times they have clicked on reply, create, or submit.

A post counter is another arbitrary form of "forum ranking" and it is based on one of the more silly measures. You think that people "boosting" in Halo 2 is bad? Imagine the garbage on this site, all in the name of "getting my rank up".

No, it's not there for a reason, and it's a good reason.

I never said having a post counter to dictate your role would be a good idea. I just like the idea of a post counter to (like Proteon said) see who's been been around longer, versus the kid who got blacklisted earlier today and made a new username to agitate others. And a post does not have to be a long entry to help the cause of the thread out. Sometimes a one word answer to a question is better than a "OMFG yur a n00b that dusnt no nething..." and so on and so forth that we see all too often.

to see who's been around longer?

Whats the "Member Since" thing for if it isn't to see how long some one has been here for?

You've been a member since January of last year while I've been around since November 04. While that's great and all, who has participated more in the community? Will we ever know?

Ok I see Recon et al. have given this thought. I am satisfied. Except I am obliged by moral law to let sparkatus know that brown nosing may not be ranked but does not go unnoticed by either moderators or other members and may have more than it's desired effect.

Brown nosing? Yes, thats it. Calling recon a bajillion years old is brown nosing.

and The post counter wouldn't do anything then cause problems. There used to be one long befoe most of us and there was problems with the "I have more posts then you hahahha" stuff. Or so I hear.

for the record, it wasnt a "rank" i had in mind.

sure "intellectuals" may feel a bit more 'important' than say "fanboy" so i suppose that would be a problem

but in a sea of posters, everyone wants to be heard. that much you cant deny. and when i scroll through posts pretty much all the forum users sound the same (to me at least)

sure, building up a reputation with consistent forum use is good, as Recon said. but i just felt that a new "identity" could add a little more to the forum, IMO

i know its a crazy idea, one that will probably end up with people forming cliques, like

"only post here if youre an intellectual"

or like someone said earlier: "I'm dedicated and youre just casual"

so yeah, i agree that something like this could potentially blow up what little social skills this forum has, but i just thought it was an interesting idea

Well what about a similar five star ranking like from Xbox Live being implemented here? Next to the reply, msg user buttons. This feature would average the percentage of other users who have rated this specific member.

It wouldn't effect the member much, but it would be cool to see how others think of you on the forums.

Example

The stars could work just like the way the rating works on YouTube. You simpy click on a star you think the member deserves, and it instantly shows. And you can only vote once.

and how would they stop you from voting again?

Most IP's aren't static. so you can't do it by IP.

I'm not trying to say it would MEAN anything for a post counter, I would just like to see it as an addition.

Granted its all hypothetical, but I can think of one glaring example of why it wouldn't work. The moderators. Seeing as how they do the blacklisting, Im sure they would get more than their fair share of 0 stars. Averaged out over time, a respected moderator would have a 1 or 2 out of 5 stars.

I can't think of a way to implement any type of system without it falling prey to one fault or another. In the end, I think the people who are dedicated members know who they are and recognize others like them.

I meant dedicated members know who they are and recognize others who are similar.

Most IP's aren't static. so you can't do it by IP.

Or by cookies either, it would have to be an entry into the membership database. Which could bring performace issues into play.

Besides, such a simple system would likely be exploited just for the purpose of ego. You think that Leaderboards were bad? You think that boosting was rampant there? Heh.

Honestly no. If it were possible for the ninjas to simply be members and use their tools anonymously, I would be all for it. The fewer status symbols, the more apparent it is that people are equal. The more we are judged by our actions and statements as opposed to our appearance or other arbitrary guides, the better. IMO.

I know that we ninjas can't go anonymous. That we have to have a higher profile than that. We have to set examples and explain our actions. But the unavoidable separation that brings is a cost that I don't necessarily enjoy. And it IS a cost. It's part of the responsibility and it is not a "perk". The statements and actions of any ninja are there for all to see and are scrutinized by the same community that we are attempting to serve.

It was nice to be able to cut lose, speak out, act up, take time off, and perhaps even play on the edge. Of course I still can do any of those things, but if I do, I am risking more than just my membership. I would be risking and endangering the trust that the community has in us and the trust that Bungie has in the community.

So, the fact that we've got as many members as we do and as few moderators... I think that is wise. By only having two types of members (members and ninja) and as few ninja as possible, it reinforces the fact that we are all members of the same community.

Cookies can be deleted so like you said, that wouldn't work. a submission to the member database would slow down the site and many people have alot ofotehr accounts.

The leader(Cheater)boards were bad. This would be worse. Everyone would get there friends to give them 5 star ratings, just like a car. I wonder if they got a good side impact rating also.

So be anymous you could always have an alternate account that you use to browse bungie and switch to the moderating one when you need it. although, if th other mods didn;t know about it then it might get banned.

Moderators would be 1 star people since they blacklist people. those people would then attempt to get revenge by, give you 1 star. No idea how gratifying that is but ok.

Maybe they do. Who's to say that Recon and DMB don't have another account where they do their venting without having to be bombarded by the rest of us.
