During the fall of Reach, John, Linda, and James(?) went to destroy the Circumference while the remaining spartans went down to Reach's surface to defend the Super MAC generators. Whilst playing generator defense in firefight, I had a random thought. What if the generators that you must defend ARE the Super MAC generators? Think about it, you ARE a spartan, and you ARE on reach, even though there were no Spartan III's.
