and he didn't have alot ot work with since the game was already out and he had to follow the story line of the game.

and I think this would be better in the Underground.

Subject: Does anyone else think Eric Nylund is a much better writer?

I'm rereading The Flood and am finding a noticeably different writing style from the other two books. I have to say, I don't like it. I feel like I'm a $h177y player playing through the game on easy mode. Enemies die with a lot less drama than in Reach or Strike and the Chief thinks and talks a lot more than he does in either of the other books or the game.
Anyone else feel this way?

I only have one account. Who the hell is x Lord Revan x?

"Look, everybody always figures the time they live in is the most epic, most important age to end all ages. But tyrants and heroes rise and fall, and historians sort out the pieces." -Jolee Bindo

Agreed.

Eric Nylund is a much better writer when it comes to the writing the Halo books.

(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

Yes, i didn't like The Flood as much as i liked the two other books, it just wasn't as good. I hate how he played through it on easy and just wrote down thoughts during the game.

"A butterfly crosses the vast meadow... as a warthog's chain gun roars in teh distance!"

I think people on this website that do fan fics could right better -blam!- then him.

Best. Mod. Ever.

Its tricky. There are aspects of Dietz's writting that I like more, and vise versa.

Ach! Was ist los?

Deitz's writing may be less interesting than Nylund's, but it has fewer spelling errors and outright bloopers.

Nylunds writing was more interesting, but there were a lot of mistakes in First Strike and The Fall of Reach.

This is my own personal opinion, but it strikes me as foolish to read a book to which there is already a game (word for word, sequence by sequence). Granted you get some insight into what lead characters were thinking at key times, and you get an insight into events that were not shown in the game, but on the whole I had to stop reading the book about a third of the way through.

All I could think was "Wait a minute? Why am I reading this? I already have the game!".

SpaceGhostFlyer: Jessie!
Butane: James!
sir_brilliant: Team Rocket blasting off at the speed of light
Butane: Surrender now or prepare to fight

Actually, I enjoy the flood more than first strike. And just as much as Fall of Reach.

It's just, some people don't care for the realism, or knowing what kind of ammunition the Chief is using, but some of us do.

I'll have to agree on that point. After re-reading TFoR, I saw a lot of grammar errors.

Yet Diets calls the SR a "Sniper's Rifle" he does it several times in The Flood and it annoyed the hell out of me!

The few, the proud, the leet.

I read through the flood once then threw the book away. It really ticked me off. If you're going to use another author's established characters/plot, then dont twist or corrupt it. The Flood basically destroys everything that Nylund created.

Lets be honest, None of the books are exactly shakespear are they? The standard is about the same as some of the fan fics. I don't think anyone who hasnt played the game would enjoy them.
Big love,

I didn't enjoy The Flood as much as the other two, but I think there's a reason to it. He didn't have much to make his own since the storyline and events were already completely laid out.

Exactly. Halo 1's story was made for a game, it doesn't translate to a book well.

I'll be honest, deep down, I enjoyed The Flood by Dietz more than I enjoyed First Strike by Nylund though they were both really good books. I didn't think Nylund's writing style was all that much better/different from Dietz though most of you beg to differ.

  • 06.30.2006 5:02 PM PDT

I am certainly glad there is a book that covers the events of Halo1. I just dont like the way it was pulled off. But like I said before, the flow felt like I was still playing through the game on easy mode.

Nylund also seems to focus more on the 'science' side of science-fiction. A lot of his descriptions of technology and evens are much more detailed and concise than what Dietz does.

Now that I'm thinking about it. Why did Bungie/Microsoft decide to switch authors for the Flood? I guess if they were not written in chronological order, it would make sense but if Reach was written first, why change authors for the Flood one and then back to Nylund for First Strike?

I think its obvious, they assumed Dietz was a better Author, but hwen they read and foudn how his writng style was good, but not so In-Depth as nylunds, they decided to have him write the next one

Or simply Dietz didn't want to write another one.

Send me a group invite, and I shall return a harsh reply. Do not invite me to groups. I do not accept. Don't believe me? Look at the list of groups I'm in right now. Consider this your warning.

Also, keep in mind, no matter how much he could have spiced up The Flood, the pictures in your head could never even come close to the actual game. But for the record, I liked Fall of Reach more, but First Strike was the best. And while I did notice some inconsistencies, in Nylund's, such as dates and descriptions of things, I still find his style to be a lot more intense. I'll look beyond the errors, and I still enjoyed Nylund's books more.

I do think Nylund does much better writing; he just needs better proofreading.

its not evn just about his proofreading skills. Its about him being plain wrong about everything. like you think someone would catch onto things like major mistakes he makes.
in First Strike he describes the chief landing on the covenant flagship in a LONGSWORD but then later someone on his team is told to go and check out the PELICAN. Like that is a MAJOR mistake. Dietz is less mistake ridden because all he had to do was play halo.
......On easy, i might add.

You say plain wrong about everything? Examples, please.

And when they landed on the Covenant flagship, there were two UNSC ships. A pelican and a longsword, one after another.

The Flood was good, but I thought it got a little boring at parts because it's essentially a walkthrough of Halo 1 with a few parts added in.
