Who do you think in one sense 'owns' the threads.

This got me thinking after someone started a thread about something or other, and it descended into a huge argument about something slightly different. Hundreds of people got involved, and the OP changed the topic title to 'mods please lock'. Many people complained saying the discussion going on in the thread was not his, and he didn't have the right to try and end it.

Where do you side on this?

Welcome to the town of "Diligence." I'm Mayor Due.

I vote other for Bungie in the most literal sense.

But, the OP's topic takes precedence over random topic changes should it not? Giving them ownership.

Also, was the thread a question that can be answered with a yes or no?

Was it asking for opinions on a specific issue?

Just satisfy OP, is the moral of the story. Once the OP's needs have been satisfied regarding their query or whatever, it's pretty much open season. Let the discussion evolve I say. Ownership transfers to the masses.

How did I do OP? Are ya satisfied......

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

The Black Chapter!

Noone owns it. Legally, of course, it is the property of Bungie, along with everything on their servers. But in the sense that the question was intended (so far as I can divine) threads aren't owned, any more than the air or the sun. They just are.

I would venture to say that, after the OP makes the thread, the community owns it, and has all rights to do what they please. Bungie can't own a thread, all they and the Mods can do is lock a thread.

Bungie owns it, you're responsible for it.

Legally, it's a whole other issue.

Per Audacia Ad Astra

The ownership of a topic belongs to those who reply perfectly.

  • 11.08.2012 10:16 AM PDT

Get over yourself - drink vodka!

just like the people of the united states own our nation

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

The term "own" is tricky when we're talking about characters on a screen.

The OP clearly creates the topic, but the community is who decides (by their interaction or apathy) what "happens" to the topic.

I don't know whether anyone can "own" a discussion. Certainly, other than post/ignore/report, the non-ninja members don't have any direct "control" over the fate of the topic.

I'd say that we're each responsible for our responses. If we post, we're responsible for what we type. If we report, then we're responsible for that action. If we ignore... well, apathy and silence speaks more loudly than any shouting.

If we're talking about forum features though? I wouldn't be against the OP having the ability to "report" their own OP and that automatically collapses the OP, puts the topic into the report queue and flags it as a "lock requested" type of report.

Far easier than editing the OP and re-titling it to "please lock".

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

We have no rights, ownership therefore would seem to lay with the website. However, idealistically, I would say that the community should claim ownership over the threads posted here. No thread is owned by the person who creates it as we all contribute and read it if we choose. Without the interaction from others, the thread would be pointless.

The community adds meaning and purpose to threads, and because of this I believe that if ownership were to be questioned, that the question be dropped as we do not "own" threads. We "participate" on the forums by posting and replying to threads. I do not believe "ownership" is important.

^This, a pretty well stated answer. But there's not really ownership of a thread, just the creation of it and how it's kept alive.

  • 11.08.2012 11:01 AM PDT

Per Audacia Ad Astra

Those that generate discussion value in the topic have more ownership than any other user who interacted with it.

Ultimately, Bungie owns the website and everything on it.
