If good looks could kill, I'd be a weapon of mass destruction.

Q: Hey, what did Hitler say to the black jew?
A: Get to the back of the oven.

*Some minor spoilers throughout*
*Also, Kind of a Long Read*
*Also posted in Waypoint*

Does anyone else get the impression that the Precursors and or Flood (new/super flood perhaps?) are being set up to make an appearance in the future Halo titles in the reclaimer trilogy?

It seems to me that 343 wouldn't waste their time with the presentation of Precursors in Forerunner novels only to have them present in the saga of the past.

While its possible that the above may be true, and the Precursors are only characters/plot devices to explain the flood and the actions of the Forerunners 100,000 years ago and that they have no place in the current events of the games, the line spoken by the Primordial at the end of Primordium seems to indicate otherwise: [paraphrase] "We are the Flood. There is no difference. In a hundred and one thousand centuries(<possible error on author's part?) unity again, and wisdom. Until then, sweetness." [paraphrase]

So I see this as one of three likely possibilities:

1. The Precursors are, again, only story elements of the past to explain the actions of the Forerunners, and the possible motivations for the Didact now (as in, his anger)?

2. The Precursors/Flood will come into play, but not during the Reclaimer Trilogy. Perhaps following, in an all new saga (assuming Halo continues to do well, and 343/Microsoft has planned that far ahead)

3. Precursors/Flood will come into play in the Reclaimer Trilogy. As hinted by the Librarian that she's "preparing [the Master Chief] for what is to come," but being interrupted by the Didact before she can finish explaining to the Chief, is she perhaps referring to the return of the Precursors? The resurgence of the Flood? Both?

While it's possible she was simply referring to the Didact and the Composer, I just don't hold this as very likely considering Chief already KNEW of the Didact and his threat to humanity. But it seemed like the Librarian (being the Didact's wife and lover [at one point at least]) doesn't necessarily want him killed, just stopped from harming humanity.

So why does Didact want Forerunners back? Why does he want to turn all humans into Prometheans? Why does the Librarian want to stop the Didact from doing so, and genetically ascends the Master Chief?

Well, perhaps the answer is they want/need the means to fight the Precursors/Flood, but disagree on how to do so.

Didact is a Forerunner first and foremost, and has always somewhat opposed humanity, but recognizes the power they represent, so why not use them as forces to fight the Precursors and reestablish the Ecumene?

The Librarian however has always viewed Humanity as special, and perhaps wants to combat the Precursors via other means?

"Humans are the greatest threat to the galaxy," the Didact said [paraphrase]. Now perhaps he's speaking of humanity and its destructive nature. Or perhaps he's referring to the mantle and the fact that they are about to be tested by the Precursors/Flood and he knows they are going to fail, and the galaxy will perish as a result. Hence why the Didact wants the Forerunners to reestablish dominance as he feels the Ecumene will have the means to combat the Precursors and save the Galaxy as they had originally done millions of years ago* (according to Cryptum and Primordium, although this may be contradicted by Silentium in the near future)

This is all speculation on my part, but I hope you enjoyed the read!

Well the Flood is still in the galaxy, so I would assume that it will make a return.

Thanks for the contribution gents, but I was hoping for a little more discussion.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

"You are the culmination of a thousand lifetimes of planning."

"Planning for what?"

We assume at this point the Didact doesn't interrupt [bastard].

"To finish a fight that we could only delay, to defeat an enemy beyond any of us - the Precursors. They are returning, and humanity is their next target for their twisted 'test'."

Something along these lines is what I imagine taking place...similar to Mass Effect with fighting the Geth (commanded by Saren) or Collectors as the front-face enemy with the real threat approaching from the dark.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

When Humans become top dogs of the galaxy and become evil bastards

It will be the grunts who will take the mantle and fight humanity. Spartan Grunt 117 will ensure this. It took many lifetime of planning for grunty chief to make it this far, had he died by the hands of his suicidal grunt tradition of his time, the galaxy will be screwed. As the humans will return.....

*yawn.

Seriously this. The Halo universe has become so hackneyed and boring at this point it wouldn't surprise me if by the end of everything the story just went off the deep end. Not that it hasn't already.

That or humanity will beat the Precursors and find out their is an even greater threat to the galaxy called the Harbingers who made the Precusors eat too many cup cakes and blah blah blah...

That or Durandel escaped the closure of the universe, became a god and created the Halo universe as one big practical joke.

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

Halo might go the same way as the Mass Effect universe did before Shepard resolved everything; an endless loop of civilisations reaching near full tier, only to be defeated by an age-old system. We've already got synthetics in the fiction.. Wonder if they'll fine-tune the rings to only affect them?...

After a story has had its course for a while, it becomes kind of obvious where it is going. It's like a pyramid that builds up to an apex. Once one knows the coordinates, it becomes somewhat predictable. Because of this, writers tend to try and make a sudden twist towards the end, in some sort of belief that the end will be more satisfying that way. I'm not sure about that though, find more pleasure in seeing something through, seeing whether or not my predictions were correct or not.

When Halo 3 ended there were a set of coordinates, indicated by the lead characters and main themes. Now there are more characters and more themes (some of them redefined), this makes it harder to predict, but I'm not sure they won't throw in a twist just for the sake of it.

The point I was trying to make is that the Flood and Precursors are well known factors, and with one more book and two more videogames, chances are they might be so well defined, that the story drives itself towards the end. Unless...
