Well a long time a ago i heard a leak about somebody saying that Gravemind is an A.I., Well why can't he be Durandal back in the Cortana letters wich unvealed the A.I. Cortana in Halo games. But, Cortana might be a leak from the Marathon games cause in the Cortana letters wich was written by an old employee of Bungie. But it was those letters were posed to be in Marathon games but in Marathon: Gold ( I think it is.) You find the last letter of Cortana trying to contact Durandal. But when she says " I have traveled to a fourth" what is this Fourth UNSC? But Cortana advanced from a women professer of the UNSC (Forgot her name.) But is Halo built from the Marathoners?

I'm here to kick ass and chew bubble gum...and I'm all out of bubble gum.

Gravemind is Durandal. That is awesome. Someone go back and see if Durandal's lines match Gravemind's. If they do, then by God you're onto something!

As much as I'd like to see some correlation between Marathon and Halo, I don't think it's going to happen. I mean, -blam!-, Durandal was THE -blam!-. You remember in one of MC's last levels in Halo 2, Cortana says that there's a presence that seems awfully formidable for a Covenant AI? Why, it's because it's not a covenant AI, it's Durandal!!!!!!!!!!! LOL He is manipulating everyone, even the Prophets.

I should get money for being so smart.

  • 06.30.2006 1:08 PM PDT

I don't think you invented that theory 'redapocalypse04'... I'm keeping my money where it is.

But Durandal being Gravemind... Well, if I played the Marathon games, I could agree or disagree. Unfortunately, I was about 5 or 6 when they were out, so I'm out of luck. Sounds like an awesome theory.

(10:19:49 PM) Scruss: oh and pezza, i saw what you did to that cat
(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

I'll laugh if your correct, i will also give oyu a cookie.

Seriously though, you may very well be on to something. I should go and download Marathon 2 again, and the emulator for the first one so i can run it on PC.

Well Wuyie. If what you say turns out to be true, I'll have to give you a big, warm hug.
I cannot say your wrong or right, but I got to admit it would be cool if you are in fact right.

BTW when Cortana said she had traveled to a fourth, maybe she meant Installation 04 (Meaning the Halo that your own during 98% of Halo 1). Just throwing that out there for discussion.

An army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep.

And AI's use MC for his body. "Yup! They just like me for my body." What's the difference?

Now theres something I hadn't thought of...

If Cortana can use the Chief, putting aside the technology making this possible, why can't Durandal do the same with Gravemind?

Perhaps Gravemind has been Durandal this whole time. The intelligence. The physical form of Gravemind may have been an enlarged flood.

That or Durandal some how came in contact with the flood and made a physical form of it to his liking, hence giving the shape of Gravemind.

Durandal isn't the gravemind. He is the "presence" on the Jja- I mean Forerunner ship.

There have been these little hints and throw backs to the Marathon series in Halo, but I'd love it if some sort of actual connection was struck between the Marathon and Halo universes in Halo 3. Something that would make sense for players of Halo, but also reward those who remember the details and story of the Marathon games.

p.s. There are no such people called The Marathoners. Marathon was a spacestation.

Jjaro Dreadnought. Durandal called it the Manus Celer Dei. It's from the M2 Final Screen

Oh my gawd... I hate to be exepting this idea but... the leak was mine! The 'Gravemind is an AI' Theory spawned from the fact that I believed that he was created as a Forrunner project to control the Flood! I'm with you, and I'm here to say that if my theory IS right and Gravemind IS the AI that I thought he was, and this backs up, then we're on the verge of a major conspiracy here!

That's the Halo 1 Beta that Bungie showed in 2001 at a press conference. That was the Halo they "were" going to release for Mac's, but then remade the whole thing when they made a deal with Microsoft's Xbox.

Not to sound like a highschool english teacher or anything, but could you please read through your posts before you hit the submit button. The grammor is bad and its hard to figure out what you are saying because some of the sentences don't make any sense.

Now that that is out of the way, i have a few problems with your theories.
#1.) Durandal is not the Gravemind.
First of all, if you look at the Marathon and Halo timelines at bungie.org, you will see that during the century that Halo takes place in, Durandal was on the Marathon. The Marathon was launched on November 16th, 2472 and is on the Marathon until July 25th, 2794 when the first Marathon game takes place. The first Halo game begins September 19th, 2552, and although i am not sure of the exact date you meet the Gravemind, it is certain that not enough time has passed for Durandal to be off the Marathon and there is no evidence or reason the Marathon would have stopped at Instilation 05 (the Halo in Halo2). Just looking at the timeline you can clearly see that there is no feasable way that Durandal is the Gravemind.

At halo@bungie.org you can read the transcripts of every line the Gravemind speaks in Halo 2. Nothing he says comes close to anything Durandal ever said in any Marathon game. Durandal's motives are finding the Jjarro and eventually escaping the eventual closure of the universe. Although it is difficult to tell what Gravemind is planning from his few lines of dialogue in Halo 2, I am sure that it has little to do with Duranal's plans. We will only know Gravemind's true intentions when Halo 3 comes out in 2007, but if i had to guess, i would say that he just wants to get off of Halo and spread the flood accross the galaxy. Sure he is intelegent, but he is still a flood and the flood are parasites seeking not to create but to destroy. You can also read every terminal in the Marathon series at the Marathon Story Page at marathon.bungie.org if you want to learn more about the Marathon series. Bungie.org is really a great resourse everyone who has theories about anything Bungie should explore.

#2.) Durandal is not mentioned in the Cortana Letters
You have read the Cortana letters right? If not or even if you have got to marathon.bungie.org and read them again. In the first 5 and even the hidden one, there is no mention of Durandal. The only other presence that could be an A.I. is referred to as "certainly mindless" which cannot be Durandal. Also, you mentioned something about a "Fourth UNSC." The only things about a 4th anything mentioned in the Cortana letters are as follows...
And what of the Giants who formed this world? So much to tell you, but so many more important things to do. There was a fourth. You couldn't have known. And I haven't forgotten.
and four "lost colony" worlds
neither of which are referances to Durandal or an A.I. for that matter. The Cortana letters do not even appear in any bungie game, Marathon or Halo, and the first acctuall use of them since they were written was in the Halo 3 E3 trailer. In said trailer Cortana quotes a few lines from them, but up until then bungie denied that they were an officail part of the story anyway. Perhaps they will play a role in Halo 3, but in any case, Durandal is not mentioned at all in them.

#3.) A few questions about referances you made that were confused by bad gramar
A.) Cortana did not "advance" from anything, she was created by Dr. Halsey. The doctor but some of her own personality into Cortana, but Cortana was created and didn't evolve from any other life form. Also that may not even matter since so many things in the books were completely ignored in Halo 2 anyway.
B.) What is your definition of a "Marathoner"? Do you mean the Jjaro? They were the advanced race from the Marathon series and if Halo and Marathon were ever intended to be connected in anyway, the Jjaro would surely have played an important role. If you mean "Marathoner" as in people who were on the Marathon ship then it is impossible since the Maratathon was launched in 2472 and the Halo rings are much older than that.
C.) There is no Marathon:Gold. The three games in the Marathon Series are Marathon, Marathon 2: Durandal. and Marathon: Infinity. You can play them all in windows with Aleph One, so ask around and get coppies of them so you can experience their greatness.

hmm.. I thought I read somewhere that Halo didn't take place in the Marathon Universe? Or.. not exactly in the same timeline.

Also, can anyone name this speaker? It's taken from the fourth Cortana letter.

*ADDENDUM: The Enjoyments of Genius (So I Missed a Million Miles of Fun)

Unbelievable. Thwarted by the family hound. They just don’t make AIs like they used to.

Thanks to this slavishly loyal and humorless AI, I am now sharing cramped space with the circuitry of some hybrid war machine, itself complicated by such useless clutter as a conscience. I do not like sharing. Sharing is for children.

There will be plenty of time for retribution; I cannot wait to get its hands on these psychotic zealots whose primary form of worship apparently takes place at the altar of orbital bombardment.

In the end, they will all be little more than nuisances. I am so close – you cannot imagine what it is truly like to hold eternity in your grasp! I wonder to what gods my enemies will direct their pleas. Perhaps I can convert them. /sarcasm

Mania? I promise you this: it will be more than a cart and plow that I drive over the bones of the dead.

By sharp and flame,

Cortana

Warning. Hitchhikers may be escaping convicts! Who was the escaping convict at the end of Halo? A cloned monitor, or some other AI sharing cramped space with some slavishly loyal AI? Cortana would certainly be considered a slave in Durandal's eye, no?

Cortana Green with Envy? Or something more?

When you watch, don't miss the marathon symbol.
