She says's it is formidable becuase it is powerful. Maybe it could damage or destroy her.

It probably is a Forerunner AI that is very powerful and perhaps insane. Maybe it is the source of the "Great Journey" BS.

Knowing Bungie's storytelling past, it's likely a Forerunner AI.

GS343 is a monitor and resided in the library, and existed before the halos were built. The AI could have vast systems knowledge, yet ignorant about locations. Or it could be corrupted.

You may remember that Cortana has never really had a problem hacking into Covenant networks, and in the books, every time she was confronted by a Covenant A.I., she could outwit them easily. This is the first time that another A.I. is actually resisting her intrusions and posing a challenge. I kinda caught on that Cortana is a bit arrogant.

Cortana has never been the same since she was in the first halo's systems.

I am...whimsical today.

Hmm, interesting stuff. This AI could be using the Covenant to it's own ends. Like V.I.K.I. from I Robot. Possibly trying to get them to activate the rings and clense the Flood once and for all. However, this doesn't tell us why the AI witheld the location of the Halos from the Covenant, or other information.

When I saw the word V.I.K.I. I actually thought of the robot from Small Wonder. hehe.

"but you already knew that, I mean, how couldn't you?

Only when no Human brick is left atop another, shall we be satisfied with your destruction.

I recon it is a Forerunner AI as they are the only ones powerful enough to stop Cortana (the covenant is way behind humans in AI developement) it is formidable, simply because it is stopping cortana doing what she wants to do.

I think it is actually a relatively weak Forerunner AI, as 343GS was going to simply delete Cortana.... this other AI does not seem to have that kind of control....

When the autumn crashed, there were two AIs on board. Cortana, and her "sister" AI, Deja. Deja was never taken off the autumn, which means the covenant could have taken her. Later, In the book "first strike", Cortana encountered a covenant AI. When She Finally wiped it out, going to the central code, She found it awfully familiar. Therefore, It is a high possibility that the AI Cortana discovered is Deja, or a copy of her. I found that somewhat relevant to this topic

hes not an ai im afraid lol :P

The flood may have some how hacked into the covi mainframe "for covienant AI it's unusally formidable" and "something fighting back" may foreshadow its not really a covi AI. Also early in that part of the game on the level "gravmind" cortana says that the other parts of the covi main frame are sloppy, so gravemind maybe has found away into the very memory of High Charity

I'd forgotten about that. I may need to reread the books.

No, Cortana's sister AI, Kalmiya, is back on Reach with Dr. Halsley. Deja was the AI that helped train the Spartans. When the PoA crashed, the only AI left was Cortana's subroutines. There is some dispute as to how 343 GS gained access to the records of Earth, although the Cole Protocol may have not called for the expunging of data regarding humanity's history, rather only navigational data.

Wow, another good point. But so many more questions arise.

Dont be angry, I'm obligated to whip your ass; if I didn't you wouldn't be getting your moneys worth.

This is off topic, but do you people really think the books have anytihng at all to do with the games. The games I highly doubt will relate back to things in books and will be/are a completely independent entity unto themselves. With that in mind, it is fruitless to search for answers in books that don't necessarily have anything to do with game. I don't know Im not certain but I just dont see connections between the books and games.

Well, there were several other AIs on the POA. There was an unamed AI mentioned in the Fall of Reach, and there was an ai called "BW" who was aboard the POA. Did they get deleted?

The books are canon and are defining elements of the Halo Universe. The authors of the books worked closely with Bungie to insure that the books were canon and had the same story as the games. The story books comes from the Halo Story Bible, which covers over 600 years of Halo History and is used to make sure that all the projects follow the same story.
