You face an opponent who has never known defeat, who laughs in foreign tongues at your efforts to survive. This is Reply suicide.

"Oh Molly Connoly ruined my life, I thought the world should know."
Say Anything - Every Man Has A Molly

I would conjecture that Cortana THINKS it's an AI. This is why Cortana betrays you at the end... answering the Graveminds' questions... She realized it could hack into her systems (or already has) and is prepared to give it EVERYTHING.

Evidence of this?

Look all over High Charity and you'll see Flood growth coming out of the WALLS. Like it's growing ON the tech or even ASSIMILATING the tech!

Need any more proof?

When the autumn crashed, there were two AIs on board. Cortana, and her "sister" AI, Deja. Deja was never taken off the autumn, which means the covenant could have taken her. Later, In the book "first strike", Cortana encountered a covenant AI. When She Finally wiped it out, going to the central code, She found it awfully familiar. Therefore, It is a high possibility that the AI Cortana discovered is Deja, or a copy of her. I found that somewhat relevant to this topic

No, Cortana's sister AI, Kalmiya, is back on Reach with Dr. Halsley. Deja was the AI that helped train the Spartans. When the PoA crashed, the only AI left was Cortana's subroutines. There is some dispute as to how 343 GS gained access to the records of Earth, although the Cole Protocol may have not called for the expunging of data regarding humanity's history, rather only navigational data.

Well, there were several other AIs on the POA. There was an unamed AI mentioned in the Fall of Reach, and there was an ai called "BW" who was aboard the POA. Did they get deleted?

No, there were no other AIs on board the PoA after it left Reach. Only Cortana.

This is off topic, but do you people really think the books have anytihng at all to do with the games. The games I highly doubt will relate back to things in books and will be/are a completely independent entity unto themselves. With that in mind, it is fruitless to search for answers in books that don't necessarily have anything to do with game. I don't know Im not certain but I just dont see connections between the books and games.

THANKS. To clarify, the books are based around the games. The games are not based around the books. Get what i'm (and Col Forbin7) saying?

It's not surprising for me if Cortana mistakened a Forerunner AI for a Covenant AI, since the Covenant's technology is based off the Forerunner's.

I think the Forerunner Ship(I also believe this ship is The Ark in question)has living intellegience aboard. A Forerunner AI. Perhaps the foreign presence is the shipmaster. If it's protocols are to initiate the launch sequence, then it would undoubtedly try to stop Cortana from messing everything up to delay the launch.

Neither is the case. The books and games are canon to the Haloverse storyline. That is to say, neither are based off each other, but they are complementary.

Are they? I'm quite sure that the Haloverse "storlyine" wasn't even made until after Halo1. Therefor, the first game is it's own story NOT based of the Haloverse, but is the begining.....OK, you win......

Bungie already had at least 50 years of Haloverse lore in place before Halo: CE came out.

Wrong.

"We finally have an AI," he remarked to Hikowa.

"We've got more than that, sir," Hikowa replied. "Cortana is running teh shakedown and supervising Dr. Halsey's modifications to the ship. We have a backup AI to handle point defence"

With slipspace travel and all, time travel is very possible. That one AI was sent back in time (ilovebees) and was stuck in the year 2004. Also, spartan 458 was sent back in time also (DOA4)

The Halo Story Bible was created and in use during the production of Halo. It was used to make sure that the game and book had the same story.

Interesting, I hadn't read the ship-to-ship transmissions. As for the backup AI, it was not a "smart" AI, nor was it ever brought online. Although those transmissions make me think there may have been a stowaway named Beowulf....

Yes, that's what I've been thinking. The BW AI was also mentioned in the Cortana letters, but those aren't canon.

It was on the Forerunner ship, not High Charity. My Guess is that the Forerunner ship is really a Jjaro dreadnought called Manus Celer Dei

This would mean that the AI aboard it would be...

Give me a D...

Do you really think so? Not being a Marathon player, I really think it would alienate some of the Halo fan base. Isn't this AI supposed to be as old as this (the next) universe? (I'm not exactly familiar with Marathon so please correct me on this if I'm wrong).

Of course, if I was a Marathon fan, I suppose seeing one of its main characters come into Halo would be an exciting prospect. Should I become a Marathon player?
