It most likely is Gravemind. He hacked into Halo and High Charity, and made a pinpoint slipspace jump inside High Charity. In fact, that jump was impossible. Cortana needed all the sensors on an advanced Covenant ship to jump in an atmosphere. Gravemind did it with a broken-down cruiser.

Cortana would have said its an AI, because she didnt know a living creature could be better with computers than she was. Gravemind initiated a "100,000 years war" with the sentinels, even though all his combat forms were probably dead. He grabbed the Monitor, and was probably only contained because infection forms suck against sentinels. Then the Covenant show up, and in a few days at most he decimates the Forerunner machines, the humans, and takes the holy center of the Covenant Empire. The man is a genious.

It probably does has something to do with 2401 Penitent tangent being corrupted by gravemind.

I like all of these ideas very much, Im just reading 'first strike' and encountered a peice of storyline. Cortana is having trouble dealing with the tricks 'another presence' lays out for her in the covenant network; she assumes it is an AI, but feels annoyed that she of all people cannot deal with it; she isn't on full alert because she has so much data from halo taking up her other commands, maybe it has something to do with 'the bloated feeling' she has from the consumption of data, that she feels threatened by the other AI, that it could manevuer around her again?

well, she managed to outwit it in the end?

be good if it was arampant forunner AI, and it started this great journey malarky, thinking it was a prohpet or something.

otehrwise, i thinkit was gravemind: remember cortana is operating from high charity, where the flood have infiltrated.

Lets refer to our Conversations of the Universe pamphlet if you all will. In it, Cortana has a conversation with another AI whose complete name I'am unaware of, for in the book it has Cortana's name shortened to "Cort". The other AI is named "Solips". (Correct me if I'am wrong, I don't have the book on me right now, I'm going by pure memory.) I have wondered who "Solips" is. I would actually like to point this question to opog. Perhaps this is the unknown AI? Please note that I have not read the Halo books, yet, nor played Marathon. (Although I would very much like to, I do not know where to get the game.) If there is some information on this AI I do not know about, I would like to be informed.

All in all, I thought the "Solips" AI possibly being the unknown AI on the PoA was relevant in this topic.

Solipsil is an AI Cortana spoke to about the Spartan project in the Conversations from the Halo 2 Universe booklet.
The "unknown" AI on the PoA is probably Beowulf, as it is referred to as BW.

To play or not to play....

Hmmm.... This is something I have thought about a few times myself.

This AI was within the forerunners ship. Probaby some sort of forerunner AI. The Prophet of Truth may know how to navigate this AI. The Covenant technology has largely been reverse engineered from forerunner technology so it is logical that some of their computer systems and AI would be very vaguely similar though far less secure and advanced. Hence Cortana may be mistaken in believing it to be a Covenant AI. It may actually be a Forerunner AI.

Makes sense as it was on a Forerunner ship.

This AI may be what brings the Prophet of Truth back to Earth. The AI may have been installed on the ship when the ship was given to whatever race got the ship in the first place. The idea being to use the ship to take this race somewhere they could live and survive then set the ship on auto pilot with the AI returning it to the Arc (there are various reasons not to give the ship away). However the Forerunner ship was not returned the Covenant used its engines as a powersource. Somehow learning how to turn the AI off.

When the Prophet of Truth activates the AI returns to the Arc with the Prophet of Truth and the Master Chief on board.

Soooo.

When Cortana tried to tamper with the launch sequence of the Forerunner ship the Forerunner AI fought her attempts and succeeded due to simply being more advanced. Cortana could not outwit the superior AI with the limited time and resources that she had. It is only logical that she would fail.

(just a few ideas)

Oh and it can not be the Gravemind because the Gravemind was still on board High Charity after that little forerunner ship launched and was back entering Earth orbit.

The AI is probably a Forerunner AI protecting the forerunner ship from her trying to access its systems.

"formidable" because it is so strong. She can't beat it. Cortana is normally a great hacker able to hack just about any system she finds. But this one she is having no luck with. Hence it is formidable. Not to mention Cortana only has a few minutes to act. No real problem normally but this AI is not a normal AI.

That was in reply to Alexanders question right back on the first page of this thread he asked "Why formidable".

i dont understand what you mean V101.

If Gravemind is on high charity, he can affect cortanas attempts to acces the ship (because she herself is on High Charity).

The launch protocols are probably not to do with the ship anyway, chances are, its a high charity system to disconnect the link to the ship (thats what MC flies down).

And yes the space ship flies to earth, doesnt mean there is an AI on board.. not as if your car has an ai does it =p

Why would the Gravemind want to stop Cortana from preventing the launch of the Forerunners ship? The Prophet of Truth is going to the arc to Activate the Halo's this is something the Gravemind doesn't want to happen. If anything he would be helping Cortana stop the launch sequence.

Unless the Gravemind knew that the Masterchief would make it on board and wanted the ship to leave. Then the Masterchief could save the day.

I would imagine that any forerunner ship has some AI on board. The two Halo installations had extensive AI constructs all over them with one main monitor in charge. I just thought it would make sense that an AI was on board the Forerunners ship. The forerunners seem to like using AI and they always seem to be very strong AI.

Anyway it is an interesting debate :)

i don't feel like reading through your forum poops through my dial up connection so i'll just give you my piece of mind.

Gravemind had 2401 PT attached to his body. Great. That doesnt really prove anything. BUT! he did obtain his super cool transporty warpy powers that 343 Guilty Spark had in Halo. So aparently Cortana, being a dumb broad and all, was like "okay, there's something pretty freakin' enormous around here. and it's got some AI so it must be smart"

HAH!

i just thought of something.

Artificial Intellegence. Gravemind was just a normal flood ngga until he got some AI. that's why he's so gnarly at knowing things.

anyway, i'm pretty sure it's just silly ol' G-mind.

three words
screw you jackass
I am thinking it is a forerunner AI who is more advanced than Cortana, and fought her off the launch sequence; thats why the cheif only just made it inside the ship

Hmm.. It might not be an AI, we assume it is because it is in the network, and not many living things get into it that fight back; other then AI consiouses < sorry for spelling

If its a Forerunner AI located on the ship then this is likely that this AI will jump across to the MC's mjolnir suit for Halo3 to be his assistance and supplier of sarcastic comments.

I think it's most likely a forerunner construct
or 2401
or Durandal
or HAL

Gravemind could be hiding Flood on the Forerunner ship. The shorter its docked, the less chance they will be found. Then when Truth and his people hide inside the Ark from Halo's blast, the Flood can conquer them and raise their descendants as food. There wont be anyone else in the galaxy that could stop them, so the Flood can raise an empire easily.
