It's Gravemind. She doesn't know it's Covenant, she just assumes it is.

OK, having read through 7 f-ing pages, I can finally post. They don't say exactly who, but there is a secondary, likely dumb AI, for point defense on the Pillar of Autumn. BW - sounds like Beowulf, an ONI AI, who, if is anything like ONI brass, doesn't like Cortana or the SPARTAN IIs very much. However, the captain never said anything about BW... Cole protocol calls for weapon info and the navigational data (mainly Earth and Reach) to be purged, and that shipboard AIs being captured or destroyed is unacceptable. But, I assume that BW was left onboard for whatever reason, because of the lack of mention. The Covenant may have reverse engineered this AI. High Charity is near Installation 04's remains. Even though many Covenant ships were destroyed, there were a few remaining ones, which may have had the reverse engineered AI. It is reverse engineered, thus just as powerful, unlike the copied ones. And the programming of an AI is not determined by the original, it is determined by the copied/new AI's individual programming. Kalmiya is Cortana's sisiter AI. NOT Deja. She was the SPARTAN's teacher. Oh, and Cortana is not the image of Halsey, as AIs choose their own image (I think Cortana is supposed to Aphrodite, a Greek goddess of love. Not sure). And the Covenant are not superior technically. Humanity is better at tech (except for Engineers [Hugarok]). The Covenant simply copies Forerunner technology, with a few modifications. Why do you think Cortana used Covenant tech better than the Covenant on Ascendant Justice? By the way, Cortana didn't find that one formidable. She simply had a hard time catching it being that she had all that unprocessed, compressed knowledge from Halo. The familiarity may have been because the Covenant made a copy of the reverse-engineered AI from PoA. The original probably went to High Charity, the Covenant homeworld(?). The Cole Protocol protects things such as force deployment, weapons, etc. as well as Earth, suggesting that the Covenant have little ballistic weapons only because the Forerunners may have considered it primitive and dumped it, leaving only energy weapons for the Covenant to find. As for the Forerunner AI, at first I thought it was a dumb idea, but thinking on it, I don't think the idea is bad. Their AIs may not go rampant... except for one fact - the Covenant would have had powerful AIs much sooner, or atleast known of it, making less crappy ones. And the notion of only just finding it towards the end of Halo 2... I think it won't work. They had a freaking Forerunner ship. I DON'T think they would just leave it alone. They would check it out, explore, become familiar with its controls, etc., and would have found the AI. If it was dormant, the Prophet of Truth would broadcast a call for rejoicing on the discovery of a Forerunner AI.
Now, for those people with their minds set on it being the Gravemind resisting, though I disagree, I will provide a theory for you. Maybe, being that he has captured 2401 Penitent Tangent, maybe through him Gravemind is in the system. The flood do seem to have some sort of technological aspect, being able to manipulate tech organically. Just look at the lumps on the wall - the "Brain forms" as they are called. They interact with the computer systems, as did "Keyes-Flood," which was at the bridge of Truth and Reconciliation. Cortana said that the Flood were potentially repairing the ship, as the Covenant had feared. It is speculated that the Gravemind is an extremely ancient, advanced brain form that has manifested into something larger.
This is not it, I just think taking up entire pages is torture for reader that are not interested.
Oh, and if you think people should stop talking about Halo 3 theories, then get the hell out of this forum. That's what this forum is here for you stupid prick...

There are magical things called "paragraphs". Use them sometime.

I think it is GraveMind, at the end you see High Charity just like in the Truth and Reconciliation, flood all over the place (brain forms) interacting with the computer systems, etc. GraveMind now in control of High Charity finds Cortana and Cortana too is an AI, so he probbably gets more than answers out of her maybe even corrputs her. Just an opinion. But keep this in mind, we still do not really know what GraveMind is and what he is capabale of. I think he might play a pretty big role in Halo 3 and we can tell that he is pretty powerful he could take MC apart like he was nothing, Im still trying to figure out what is his purpose and why?

In the trailer Cortana says..."I have defied Gods and Demons!" Then she says, " I know You" Maybe she defied the gravemind, but part of her systems, or memory were whiped out in the proccess, just a theory, Maybe the Formidable structure is the gravemind!?!?

I wonder if this is aimed at me, most of this information is repeated over and over through itself; use some paragraphs please, it's boring and annoying to read through. If it is aimed at me then why.. I asked a question and I get the biggest pile of OMG thrown at me! I'll leave this forum only if the entire population of people on here turn into people like you. BTW with all that information came only ONE good thing, the fact that I know it isn't a forerunner AI anymore, if Im guessing the presence is anything like the AI cortana encountered on the ascendant and justice, then it would speak in religous terms; which 343 GS doesnt, he is effectivly a forerunner AI, only pyhsical.

To play or not to play....

Cortana definately states the AI was inside the forerunner ship. More than likely the AI is some Forerunner AI. It was also something to do with the launch sequence as this is what Cortana was trying to stop when she encountered the AI. The Forerunners are well veresed with AI and have created many, many forms of AI the most obvious being the Sentinals and Monitors.

In the trailer Cortana says..."I have defied Gods and Demons!"

That statement might mean more than you think... The Gods being the forerunners AI and the Demon being the Gravemind. So she might come out on top however she aquires a hell of a lot of data in the mean time and possibly becomes corrupted by something and as such changes a little bt into a sort of supreme intelligence. She might even become a sort of Forerunner.

On another though tangent... Perhaps Forerunners are not organic beings as most people suspect. Maybe the Forerunners are a supreme AI construct/s in the form of the Arc or within the Arc. Maybe they are still there. I admit that this theory is a bit extreme but it also make s a bit of sense.

No it wasn't aimed at you... that last part was aimed at people who flame others for speculating. And that whole thing about Gravemind - I was just putting something up there for people who refuse to believe anything other than the possibility it's Gravemind. It wasn't supposed to be an OMG or a flame or anything. sry :(

oops forgive me :) I thought it was aimed at me and I was like wahh! :'(

hehe, I like the idea that it is gravemind leaking into the system.
Cortana says at some stage in the game, "They didn't expect an infiltration from the inside

maybe they did? maybe they laid an artifical trap there

It can't be Gravemind. Because the presence is originating from inside the ship. And don't go saying whether Gravemind teleported himself aboard. It's either Covenant or Forerunner, which I think the latter.

Ok so quik summary...

The formidable AI came from inside the forerunner ship,
It could not have been the gravemind because the ship took off on its way to earth, thus leaving the gravemind on high charity.
Cortana obviously didnt recognize it. There for it was most likely not origanating from the pillar of autumn, however, sum evidence suggests otherwise.
The Forerunner ship was nothing more than a giant power generator for high charity.(Dont know what that has to do with anything, but...)
And Cortana obviously has a great deal to do with gravemind, as seen after the credits in Halo 2. No one knows what, but we know she has defied Gods and Demons!!

WILL SOMEONE PLZ TRY TO TIE ALL THIS TOGETHER!!??!!??
