To further support the theory that the Flood may have been a failed attempt by the Forerunners to achieve immortality, I present this quote from the Transcript to High Charity:
"TRUTH (over loudspeakers):

The parasite did not defeat the Forerunners, and it shall not defeat us.

GRAVEMIND:

Arrogant creature! Your deaths will be instantaneous while we shall suffer the progress of infinitude!

So even when everyone else is dead, the Flood will still remain?

Well the Gravemind certainly seems to be immortal.

So what motivates the Flood? If they will still remain after everything else is dead, why should they care about anything else. Based on Gravemind's comment, it almost sounds like he wishes they [himself, the flood] could die.

They do seem immortal, since they've been around for how many years, since the forrunners left without food and survived?

  • 06.30.2006 1:54 PM PDT

The Flood are the Chosen ones.

They have the biology to outlast any other species. They are a species destined to continue after all else is dead.

They are the chosen race.

Just like cockroaches, but they hurt a bit more.. and dont eat your pizza

You know i rememeber hearing about the exact same story line a few times... like an Alien species that can adapt to all of its surroundings, making it the ultimate living creature.. the perfect evolutionary being...

oh wait.. that was in... 'Aliens' annnd the movie 'Evolution' with Molder from x-files

And ironic too, if that were the case.

They can't be immortal if the way to beat them was killing their hosts. The combat forms should eventually rot away. The flood would have to be a virus to be immortal, not a parasite. Without a host.. the parasite dies.

AHA! Maybe they are, for lack of a better word, cursed? You know like the pirates in Pirates of the Carribean? That is really streching it, though.

Biologically cursed by questionable Forerunner genetic tampering?

ouch.

Maybe the Flood are pissed because they can't die. If unwanted immortality wasn't bad enough, take into account that they have to be ugly, decomposing freaks. Maybe we got it wrong all along; perhaps the Halos are not meant to stop the flood or kill them off, but rather as a form of universal euthanasia, to kill everything so that it does not have to suffer the way the Flood must be suffering for eternity.

If you were starving for eternity but couldn't die, wouldn't you call that suffering?

camboy, good idea but a little bit of a stretch..... btw flood just lie dormant when there isnt food

  • 06.30.2006 3:12 PM PDT

Dont be angry, I'm obligated to whip your ass; if I didn't you wouldn't be getting your moneys worth.

The flood arent immortal, and need a food source to survive. So, kill the food source and the flood cannot spread and thus they wipe themselves out. Enter the halo's purpose.

Here is why the flood on halo installation 04 (and elswhere) didn't die over the 100,000 year gap between the fireing of the halos and the events of halo 1:

Okay, to start, you have to notice that the flood seem to only be found on the halos. Now, I read somewhere awhile back (I'm not sure when or where) that the halos were built both as a last resort weapon against the flood, and to research the flood.

If the halos were fired at any point in time, which we know for a fact that they were, it is likely because the flood was spreading, and by that I mean that it somehow got off the halos, and to somplace else. Assuming that that is in fact the case, then, shouldn't it stand to reason that because we still find them on the halos, then they should also be found elsewhere?

Not quite. I personally don't think that the flood are immortal, but rather that they have been preserved on the halos, possibly so they could be resaserched under controlled conditions. The halos, like other forerunner structures, was built to last a LONG TIME. For many many minllenia. They are obviously still fully functional at the time of the halo games.

If I'm right, then the flood we see in the halo games have been in suspended animation all this time, and that is why they still are alive. As for gravemind, I really don't know...

Umm, I don't remember GM EVER saying that. And if you're referring to that gravelly voice over the HC loudspeakers with Truth, that would be Tartarus talking.

Good point, but then where did the Flood on Delta Halo come from? No one seemed to release them like in 04, and what about Gravemind? Was he in suspended animation just as he is in Delta Halo? It would seem he has been quite aware for a very long time.

Nope that was Gravemind. Tartarus was already off to Delta Halo to activate the ring. Play it again. You'll notice Tarty and Gravy have distinc voices.
