"A cat will blink when struck with a hammer." -George Carlin

I posted this on HBO a couple of weeks ago (and then accidentally in the wrong B.net forum a couple of minutes ago), but I was holding off on posting it here until I had finished Halo 4 for fear of spoilers.

What does B.net think of the Chief's cooking skills?

I'm either a fool or an inteligent man, depending on how sleepy or angry I am.

I originaly made an account on 07.27.2007 but I wanted to link my GT and made this account. Don't forget your passwords!

Just saw this locked thread in the Community secion. Good work! I am impressed.

It was all hand-animated in Maya. I found a Halo 3 Beta Spartan model some time last year and then modified and rigged it myself since I couldn't find any decent Master Chief rigs online. I also built and lit the set all from scratch.

By the way, I put the rig in the HBO thread in case anyone wants to use or improve it (the fingers are weighted pretty badly because the pose of the original model made it hard to line the joints up right).

I won the Star. With this on Week 18.

Epic winz.

In space, no one can see your shame. The utter beauty of the stars and galaxies will leave you lost in the desolate wasteland of rocks and dust, and that, children, is why astronauts are crazy people.
On a side note, I am a grammar & vocab-friendly guy. So don't assume I'm a smart ass if you get into a complex argument with me...

Amazingly done.

Hey I am a big Bungie fan ever since I played Halo 2. I love the series, I love Bungie. I have made a few Bungie logos in my metal shop.

How did you make animation so fluent?

I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

Get this man a job now!

Edit: I have an idea for you next video, OP. The Chief tenderizes meat with a gravity hammer.

Edit2: You should also post this on Waypoint.

You totally can! Animation is a really cool mix of stage acting, dance, sculpture, and puppetry. The technical stuff can be a tough barrier but, once you get it, you can focus on the artistry. It's like drawing. Learning how to use a pencil is easy. It's the stuff that comes afterward that's actually hard.

If you're really interested in learning about it, see if you can find Character Animation Crash Course by Eric Goldberg or The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams in your library. Other required reading, though I don't know if you'll be able to find it in a library, is The Illusion of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston.

It takes a lot of self motivation and self-critique. Going into a project, you have big dreams and hopes for it (it's going to change the world!). During it, you hate it more than anything you've ever worked on. By the end, it's usually worth it. But you have to be just a bit more naive than the average person in order to start in the first place.

Lots and lots of time. Watching it over and over and over and over trying to pick out the little things that don't work or that don't feel good and fixing them. That's another thing if you're interested in being an animator; plan on listening to the same piece of dialogue thousands of times during the few days or weeks you're working on a shot.

Haha, thanks man. If I can find more good out-of-character Steve Downes clips, I would like to do more :)

And I did post this on Waypoint, but got no response :/ Oh well. I'm glad you guys are much more receptive!

While I'm not an animator myself, I have massive respect for this art form. I'm in a digital art major in school which leaves me around artists a lot of the time and I just wanted to say that it's really refreshing to see a talent such as yourself take the time and reply equally to everyone's response. Your attitude towards your craft is very inspiring and you deserve more attention for your work.

Great work, keep it up!

Wow, inspiration really goes both ways. The response here has definitely made me want to work even harder. I guess that's why we get into art fields, right? To watch other people enjoy the stuff we make?

Where did you get the model?

Early last year I was trying to find a Spartan rig. It took a lot of digging and, while I never found a good rig, I did find a pack of the Halo 3 models and textures that someone had ripped from the beta. I found out later though that he hadn't intended to release them publicly, so I'm not sure if I should rehost them.

The rig that I used for the video, I built myself by first modifying the model topology so that it could be weighted better, and then by doing the actual rigging. Lastly, I modified the textures to work well with a general lighting setup. Since I couldn't ever find a good rig, I decided to host mine (Louis Wu is mirroring it here (right-click, Save As, .ma format for use with Maya) at HBO) in the hopes that other people will be able to find it and use it. Or, even better, that they can fix the problems with it :P

I used to want to learn this stuff but crap happens. My kids, on the other hand, have really shown an interest, and I'll be looking into these recommendations for sure.

Thanks!
And great work as well! I had a good laugh.

It's probably a quality you used intentionally, and I mildly like it, but there is too much shaking after movement. Chief looked like he was trying to do the robot.
