The j is pronounced as if its a 'y,' i heard Joe Staten (the cinematic guy) pronounce it as 'myolnir' - M-YO-L-NIR - Mjolnir, and i've also heard it said like that on numerous other occasions for different tv shows where they reference the greek gods etc.

This is where a lot of mis-transliterations/translations/pronunciations come from, the letter "J". (Like "Jehovah" coming from "YHWH")

If ever you see a "J" anteceding a consenent in reference to anything norse, pretends it's an "i".

Njord, god of the sea, is sometimes spelled "Niord". Mjolnir is "myol-ner", or else Njord is really "Nuh-Jord".

It's pronounced exactly how its spelled. Why? I would imagine that Norse writing isnt identical to our own Phoenecian lettering so when people with Phoenecian lettering did discover this word they had to convert it to an easily pronounced form. Just keep in mind there are no silent letters and every letter makes at least a small noise.
Take for instance King Thutankamun (Tut)

Just dont make it sound all bastardized American English and you should get the Idea of what it sounds like

EDIT: Damn...the guy above me seems to know his crap

I say it Muh-Jol-Near

Does the marine at the beginning of Halo 2 say it? I think he only says Mark VI.

I pronounce it "M-gol-ner" but I think the correct pronunciation is something along the lines of "M-yul-neer." But hey, I could be wrong.

The way its meant to be said. Meh-jol-near

Well then, do you know exactly how Mjolnir was first spelled?
It was with an "i".
(Kinda like what happened to Y'shua)
Y'shua--->J'shua---->Joshua--->Josh
Also
Y'shua--->iesus--->Jesus (latin "Hey Zeus!")---> Jesus (English "Jeez us")

It's that lowsy "J".

I looked for it in Wikipedia and compared phonetic of each letter to other words:

[Mjølner]

[M] like in "Much"
[j] like in "Yes"
[ø] like in "Hurt"
[l] like in "Leg"
[n] like in "Now"
[e] like in "Day"
[r] like in "Read"

so MJOLNIR sounds more like M-yel-nay-r

I don't think it matters whether you pronounce the J or not.

I take Latin in high school, and one of the first things you learn is that the romans didn't have a J (I know, It's norse, don't freak out. For a long time all of Europe spoke Latin and Greek.) I am not sure, but I think the Norse language ,whatever language they use, uses romance characters. If that's so, the J didn't exist when they named Thor's hammer. It was spelled Miolnir, but that doesn't indicate how it was pronounced. The romans spelled Jerusalem like so: Ierusalem. however, they still pronounced it with a "J" sound.

interesting, but if memory serves me right the Special edition DVD for Halo2 Bungie pronounced mjolnir several times. i believe it was pronounced like this:

Me-ol-ner

I don't have the DVD anymore so if someone could look this up it could clear the entire thread off the que.
