Ok, I participated in the discussion (it is primarily pronounced mee-yole-neer), but what does this really have to do with Halo 3?

I think that the length of this thread and multitude of different yet quite similar pronounciations proves that no one here really knows how to pronounce it. Except me. And I'm not telling. =p

The "j" makes a "y" sound!
THE "J" MAKES A "Y" SOUND!!!

It's Norse for god's sake not American! They can't even say "j" up there. It's like how the French can't make the "h" sound from "hat", they always say " 'at"!

OK, so it's settled, no more posts: THE "J" MAKES A "Y" SOUND!!!

J usually doesn't come after M, so I think it's a silent M or silent J (probably silent M)

I looked for it in Wikipedia and compared phonetic of each letter to other words:

[Mjølner]

[M] like in "Much"
[j] like in "Yes"
[ø] like in "Hurt"
[l] like in "Leg"
[n] like in "Now"
[e] like in "Day"
[r] like in "Read"

so MJOLNIR sounds more like M-yel-nay-r

Does any body care about the fact that I did some research and told you what was the actual pronounciation? Stop debating about the Y/J thing and read this.

Nah, people would much rather be stupid/stubborn and pronounce it the way they want to. Good work, though.

I did some research on this a while back. All I really had to do was go to a bunch of comic books websites with Thor fan forums on them, and there was at least one topic a piece on each of 'em asking "How do you pronounce Mjolnir?". The unanimous decision for them was to pronounce it "Mee-ole-ner", or "Mee-yole-neer"(like how many of you clever people are pronouncing it now), both would be accepted. Since it's the same word, and not an acronym for anything (it's a project name, not an acronym, guys), that's how I've always pronounced "MJOLNIR" in conversation.
