As the veil of lunacy descends, as past and future blend and shuffle, one image appears and flickers through the landscape, wraithlike. It is the Hatchling, the Newborn, walking the path of corruption, a lone figure shining in the toxic shadows. She comes dressed for war, and her wrath is terrible.
The shotgun's problems are not due to lag, but I think it does have to do with latency, there's a difference. Every game has latency, it's what people call 'host advantage'. Lag is when some of your data packets are lost in transit to the host's Xbox. Latency happens because when people connect to the host, it takes a certain amount of time for your Xbox to send the data packets to the host's Xbox (since the host's Xbox doesn't have to do this, it seems like they fire faster, more accurately, etc). This is inherent to all online games. Bungie compensated for it in Halo 2 by making the auto-aim the way it is. Dedicated servers have everyone connect to a server so that everyone has the same amount of latency. We all know how easy it is to tell who has host in a shotguns game because they can magically kill you from eight miles away yet you have to be point blank to kill them.
In Halo 2, the CPU keeps track of every bullet fired. When you fire a shotgun, there is a set number of pellets that are fired and they all have a trajectory. My theory is that in an online shotguns match, there are too many pellets flying for the xbox to keep up with and so sometimes when a shot is fired into another player the game doesn't register it as a hit even though there is a graphical reaction. Once again, I don't know for sure but I really hope it gets fixed.
p.s. My connection is not the problem. Not every problem is due to lag.
