I'm not entirely sure but from what I have heard Halo was going to be a 16-bit side-scroller not and FPS. Then with the capabilities of the Xbox they were going to overhaul the project completely, making it a third-person tactical shooter out of it. Finally they settled on the FPS we know and love. That is some of the original concept art from the side-scroller.
