According to 343 guilty spark, halo kills sentinent life, and they were activated in the past to kill the flood (it was the rings purpose). Then how did the flood survive and how did they become loose again?

We were also told that the Flood cannot be killed, only starved.

Halo was to kill most sentient life. It's kind of like how we had the mass extinction on earth that wiped out the dinosaurs but some critters survived. But this is on a larger scale. Meant to kill most but not all.

Samples were kept on Alpha Halo for study, and the Humans(Or the Covenant, but I think it was the Humans) accidentally set them loose. On Delta Halo the flood were loose for 100,000 years, but contained in the Quarantine Zone. The Presence of Humans and Covenant in the QZ allowed the flood to spread.

Threshold was were the flood was originally discovered, and samples were also kept on the mine after it was converted into a lab to study the flood. The Forerunner may have been able to stop the flood by activating the Halos, but I don;t think they ever found a way to kill it basic form that originated on Threshold. That's why they kept samples for further study.

wow... i can't believe my eyes, people who don't really know what the Halos are meant to do!!!

The halo Rings were built by the forerunner as a worst case scenario, the rings kill the flood's food, meaning the forerunner, and whatever other races were out there. they ended up using it, the flood were then stuck on the halos because the forerunner had managed to keep the contained on the Halo rings.

There are many theories on where the flood come from, some think the forerunner made them, some think they were found by the forerunner, I THINK that they were found on threshold (books say this i believe) a sort of mining colony.

It's too late at night for a true flame fest. We might get up a good argument, but I wouldn't cross your fingers or hold your breath. at least, not at the same time. Makes you real dizzy, after a while.

If you are referring to me saying that the flood was originally discovered on Threshold, I believe it is stated that the Forerunner first discovered the flood there on the Halo 2 LE DVD. There is also a quote from The Art of Halo that backs up the idea that the flood was discovered on Threshold.

just for the record, sentient means that it is any breathing being, while sapient means that it is thinking breating being, capable of standalone behavior

Actually I think sentient mean roughly "self aware" I know that animals and plants are not considered sentient life.

Sapient means, literally, "wise." Trust me, it's a latin term. Sapient, much like sentient, it usually applied to humans alone, i.e.
Hom-o Sapiens

Heh, I got censored. does this count as avoiding the language censor? cause that honestly isn't a swear word. Honest.

sentient- Having sense perception; conscious.

Does that apply to animals? And how could a Halo kill animals and not plants, or humans/intelligent life and not animals? And the flood infect only species worthy of being infected right? well there are a lot of large, powerful animals just waiting to be mutated here on Earth and probably elsewhere, so just killing humans wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.

Well, I think Penitent Tangent (or Guilty Spark, Idk) said it kills everything capable of supporting the Flood. I don't know how the Halos would determine, but let's assume the Forerunners were good at stuff like that. I guess (warning: idle speculation ahead. well, behind too, but it gets worse) you have to have a conscious, self aware mind to support the flood.

I don't know though. Are there any animals on the Halos? there are plants, so we can pretty much assume that respiration isn't the sole deciding factor when the Flood choose hosts. I don't even know if the flood has to retain the lungs in it's human hosts. I've seen human combat forms get pretty torn up, but as long as they don't explode (like when you hit them with a sword) an infection form flood can wake him up again.
