So wait, that squidgy defenseless 'mush' grows into a hard-ass beetle?! Awesome.

I am intrigued OP. How long to they take to become max level? Can you keep this updated?

Mother of God, those are adorable. Rhino beetles, eh? I'll look into it. I already raise and breed mantids.

A fellow insect keeper :D
What species do you keep? Do you keep local US species or exotics? I have some species of various types of bugs, but the main 3 are mantids, stick insects, and now beetles.

Man, they're pretty darn huge.
Are you gonna sell them later or something?

Dont want to count my Dynastes hercules septentrionalis before they hatch but if i have males and females and if they breed with enough offspring then hopefully.

Here is most of it, there are 2 large and 1 small fish tank out of the frame along with my bearded dragons viv. I had to send a photo of most of my collection to to program about exotic pet keepers, i might be on it :3

Normally that desk is clear aside from large plastic tank and the netted one on top, thats my PC desk, i just had to move most of the collection there to demonstrate how many i had for the photo. Its a bit old and some new tubs and tanks have been added since, they normally go on the bottom bunk, its converted to a giant shelf type thing with the dragons viv :)

For a big species i think the average is 2 years, some smaller ones take under a year i think.

Here

Bearded dragon! I had one a few years back, but it got sick and died. Those things are amazing.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

nope, nope, nope...

Inappropriate. Went a little to far with the butt hole tearing.

How long before they become beetles?

Thanks :)
Progress is slow with these, the first photo is from September and the other is from earlier today. I've got a few other species currenly growing aswell.

Dicronorhina derbyana layardi
Been after this species for years, always wanted some, currently got 13 grubs which look like they'll be pupating soon, heres what the adults look like.

Mecynorrhina torquata
These are real monsters, pretty hyped to keep them, got 6 larvae young larvae. Keeping them individually in seperate tubs and to keep track of their progress easier i've named them after the 6 direwolves in Game of Thrones :3
Heres the adults.

Eudicella schultzeorum pseudowoermani
That photo their is of my adults. I originally got 23 larvae, ended up with 10 males, 10 females, couldnt ask for a better result. They were the first success that kicked me off to get try more. The adults died off around the same time from old age, still got one, but their larvae are growing now. Here you can see the last adult along with some of the current 100 larvae, most had already burrowed down during the photo and i had already sold and trade another 100.

There's also a couple of others although i dont really have enough to breed, they are all from the same Pachnoda genus, it was pretty nice to see the diversity between them.

its wasnt scary...its just...abnormal

you should name one socrates and give him leadership over the others, and a second in command named ben, but ben isnt allowed in the room!!

  • 11.16.2012 12:01 PM PDT

I feel like an idiot for never knowing that's what beetles look like when they're young.

  • 11.16.2012 12:03 PM PDT

Most awkward moment to get a boner.

Anyway, they look pretty gross.

Always wanted rhinoceros beetles. It's just they live such short lifespans. Most adult beetles do, anyways.

Still may consider getting some, though.
