Subject: Contributions to XBOX Live by Bungie.

Ive been a member of Xbox Live since 2004. I was reading the wiki on Live and I noticed there were no shout-outs to Bungie. This struck me as odd because I recall them playing a large roll in creating many features we currently enjoy, like a friends list, host migration, and the true skill matchmaking system. Can someone please correct me on this? Did Bungie not make these? And if they did, can I get a Bungie affiliate to pop over to the xbox live entry of wiki and tune it up?

Bungie did not create true skill. Microsoft did.

Bungie made the Friends list and Party chat system first.. right?

  • 11.16.2012 1:48 PM PDT

See my memory is a bit rusty. But the friends list bit is what actually made me ask. Because I'm around 300% sure they made it, then Microsoft adopted it for the 360. but I wanted to confer with others lol. The wiki makes it out like Microsoft made it from the beginning which I know is BS.

Not sure why this matters, to be honest.

Ever hear or read something that Jarred a memory, but you just couldn't quite put your finger on it? Couldn't recall an actors name that played in a movie and it bothered you until you couldn't take it anymore but weren't in reach of a device that could get you to your favorite search engine? Its like that. There's nothing more at stake here than a burning question that even the strengths of Google can't answer, so knowing that Bungie is awesome enough to listen to their people, I went to the source of the matter. As far as the wiki tune up, well that's just a bit of company pride. ;-) Does this answer your question?

Bungie said they made it. It must be true.

Hi there! be sure to click that homepage link!

>Host Migration

That's debatable OP, on CoD, it's annoying as hell but sometimes it's useful as it can reduce lag.

Anyway, Bungie needs a mention anyway!

Go on.
Do it.

Well Bungie is one of the major reasons LIVE and XBox became successful, Halo CE was a huge contribution to the original XBox and without Halo 2 there would have been zero point in even getting LIVE. From what I see, Bungie was a huge, if not the biggest contributor (next to Microsoft) to LIVE in the last decade.

Agreed.

Thats like saying uber nerf armor lock because like 20 percent of the community hates it. Oh wait..................

If there's anything that bungie has contributed it is their unparalleled AI enemy design, Bullet magnetism, and their spawning system.

The spawning system more than anything. Every halo ran on the original forum. It has been stepped on, chewed up, and spit out. It's one system they could always start with. Something they could stand on.

Halo 2, made Xbox Live successful.

Halo definitely gave xbox live a huge push up. Think of what Live would be like now without halo, and the other multiplayer games who just couldnt get it right.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

I don't know what is true or not, but they do deserve some sort of shout out.

...which can't really be said about my Deviant Art Page however.

I remember Xbox Live for other games and didn't understand what it meant. Then I played Halo 2 and saw everything they put in that way and thought, "Wow, THIS... makes sense."

Halo 2 was my connection and my start to anything Live.

If what you say is true OP, then my curiosity moves to the man who originally brought that idea up before the game released and everything hit the showroom floor. The one guy who first went, "Maybe we can keep track of friends," and everyone else was like, "YEAH! That will be an awesome idea!"

I played Xbox Live for around 14 months before Halo 2 launched. Before Halo 2, Xbox Live "enabled" games were mostly limited to Optimatch style custom game servers browsers, without matchmaking, trueskill, advanced stat tracking, host migration, skill ranks, DLC or regular updates.

Arguably the most popular and revolutionary franchise on Xbox Live before Halo 2 was Rainbow Six (3/Black Arrow). These games introduced a clan/squad system that involved skill based tournament play. They had ELO and stat tracking (KD ratio, ELO rating, playtime etc). Then just before Halo 2 hit, Xbox Live 3.0 was launched, which included a whole host of new features. These comfortably coincided with Halo 2's new friends list, clan system and message system.

When Halo 2 launched, Xbox Live exploded in popularity. Halo 2 was a massive catalyst in the creation of a seamless online gaming experience for millions of gamers worldwide. It integrated and refined features that were previously fragmented or poorly implemented in other games. It made perfect use of peer to peer hosted matchmaking and host migration (which really inspired the next generation of games to take on a similar model - *ahem* Call of Duty, Gears *ahem*. Ranked matchmaking made the Xbox a viable alternative for people that wanted something similar to the competitive thrill that PC gaming offered.

Would I be so bold as to say that Bungie established Xbox Live (as many other hardcore Halo fans would argue)? No. The Halo franchise didn't establish Xbox Live. There were many moderately successful games on Xbox Live before Halo 2 launched (Rainbow Six, Project Gotham 2, Crimson Skies, Counter Strike - and more). But it's definitely fair to say that without Halo 2 - or Bungie, Xbox Live would be a very different place today, if it existed at all. Xbox Live was a fledgling gaming service propped up by a computing giant that was inexperienced in the realm of console gaming. Today it is arguably one of the biggest, most accessible and most successful gaming communities on the planet...

Bungie definitely helped lay the foundations of the Xbox Live service we all know and love today. And for that I am grateful.

Just drink a beer and everything will be ok

Apparently, Bungie invented (or at least were the first to use successfully) the WASD key configuration for PC. In Marathon I believe?

Quote from Confucius

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.

I wouldn't say Bungie made Xbox Live what it was but I say it kickstarted it and probably refined what simple Xbox Live is.

Integration on in-game servers, chat, messages into 1 global streamlined service

Thanks Wizzie, I believe you and I are on the same page. I appreciate the candid reply.

According to this, data from Halo 2 was used to develop the TrueSkill system, so Bungie contributed in that way.

Bungie definitely vaulted Microsoft into the arena of console gaming with Halo 2. They deserve at least some credit.
