Subject: Who else hates Del Rio?

He's the most annoying person in halo history:  21%

I like him:  14%

Why does he even exist?
He talks like his tongue is duck-taped to his upperlip; he thinks that he is the greatest captain with his big, mighty ship; and every order he gives cris-crosses chief's plans to save humanity!

I hate him and i would certainly add him to my top ten of the most annoying game characters.
Who else feels this way?
If i was the chief, i would pay some elites to r*p* Del Rio up in his *ss.

Once More Unto the Breach

I think that Del Rio was necessary in order to show that Spartan IIs are a thing of the past in the sense that Spartan IVs have in a sense "taken over" as most iconic supersoldiers. Cortana tells Chief that they replaced him in one of her bouts and by the end Chief starts to believe it. Lasky and Halsey are really the only people who still think that Chief is the best.

Most iconic? Hell no. By the end of the War, II's are legendary. Nobody even knew the IV's existed.

As of the current date, yeah the IV's are being mass produced but are they really all that famous? What have they done (in public knowledge) to make them famous? II's exterminated entire armies.

Notice how Commander Palmer hesitates when Del Rio asks her to arrest Chief? Yeah, she's smart. She doesn't wanna mess with that.

No offense, you're an idiot.
MS is the last serving s-II he is not even a threat and saying that he isn't as good as the S-IV's is retarted.
If the S-IV's are so good, why didn't they stop the Didact? Infinity had hundreds of S-IV's aboard.
But no, it was the 41 year old S-II who did everything, it was he who fought alone against Storm's forces and the Prometheans at the same time.
And by the way, if S-IV's are so good, why did they need training from S-II's?
If more S-II's were still in service or if even John had Blue team with him, they would have prevented everything, the Didact wouldn't even have been awakened. Blue team would certainly kick every S-IV's *ss.
I would even think that S-III's could beat the S-IV's.

I thought he was a lovely chap, and it's a shame Laksey and Palmer were too treacherous to do the noble thing and arrest the insubordinate Master Chief.

Hopefully we'll play as him in Halo 5.

Gee whiz, it's almost as if 343i wants you to hate him.

His purpose was to be hated by the player and he did a damn fine job of it I think.

At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

That's what I thought too.

The Infinity was filled to the brim with military units worthy of being classed as Spartans, and yet Chief was the one that had to roll upp his sleeves, what? How did the Covenant infantry even come close to the ship? The Infinity had Mantes, Scorpions, and who knows what else. (On the other hand, why didn't the Covenant ships just glass it a bit, they were in range?)

Of course, Chief went to Infinity because he hoped that it might help save Cortana, but that does not explain why it should be crawling with Covenant. What were the other Spartans doing, playing Spartan Ops?

"Her hull's intact, mostly."
"Something tells me that's only because the Didact wants it that way."

Not sure why the Didact wanted Infinity undamaged.

He wanted to scan it for information on humanity and possibly the location of the composer. He was so confident in his superiority over them that he assumed they would be unable to fight back effectively.

That is true, I always assumed that there was a reason for not ripping through it like he did when he grabbed the Composer, instead of just hovering around, that's why I wrote "glass it a bit" (heat up the roof where Chief stood or something).

I thought they were all strangely passive, it felt that everything happened mostly because of gameplay purposes.
(Especially the Didact; he hates humans, and yet he repeatedly ignores Chief, whattt?)

Whoa. Totally read that in Prophet of Truths voice.

OT: He's not a good Commander. Far too arrogant.

This doesn't make sense.

I didn't like Del Rio, but I think thats what 343i wanted. Not only did cortona or lasky have respect or belive in him the, spartan IVs did too. They new what he has done and know who he is.

Brains beats brawn get used to it

Fear the Red Comet

Variety is the spice of life.
Long live games.
Death to all fanboys.

Del Rio's purpose in Halo 4 was just to serve as contrast and give way for Lasky having the role of Captain, nothing more. Thursday War basically had it set up for Lasky to succeed Del Rio just based off the oozing amount of compliments Parangosky had for Lasky over Del Rio. All 343i needed left was the reason to kick him off. Since 343i didn't want to outright have Del Rio killed (probably in part because they didn't want hostiles breaching that far deep into the Infinity in the titular level) they had him replaced due to making the stupid decision to abandon a Forerunner treasure trove.

Because let's face it, despite Lasky saying how Fleet wasn't too happy that Del Rio abandoned the Chief, the higher ups were likely more pissed off that Del Rio let the Covenant have free reign to Requiem's treasure trove of Forerunner tech, and for failing to make an attempt to stop the Didact from attacking Earth.

Agreed. I think how 343i got rid of him was very well done though.

  • 11.19.2012 12:42 PM PDT

He's made like that. They need a generic, unlikable character in their story because 343 couldn't do any better.

I think the same too, if you give a S-III a Mjolnir armor Mark 5 or 6 he'll be similar to S-II (if you count training and augmentations) so we can conclude that S-III can beat S-IV without too many problems.

Are you sure? I thought that too, but then why would previous-class Spartans (such as the remaining IIs) be encouraged to join the Spartan IV program? That way they're being downgraded a lot, which seems counter productive.

Yes! And when Chief towers over him and growls: "No, Sir" he looked so pathetic and it was brilliant.

We should know better, because we are better.

I was fine with him. He acted reasonable for the most part. He was right to ask Chief to hand over Cortana. Emotional connection aside, Cirtana was a clearly Rampant AI currently plugged into the most advanced ship the UNSC had. What if Cortana was plugged in and she had an episode just like she did in the Lich? That could have easilly meant the death of Master Chief if it wasn't for the fact that Chief has more plot armour than Marneus Calgar being written by Matt Ward.

Getting out of Requiem was also a smart move. The Infinity was outnumbered by the Covenant by a large margain and they were trapped in a world with an angry Forerunner. The former would not have made a large difference, but Didact's warship shrugged off all of Earth's defense fleet. Infinity itself could only hurt it when Chief took out the cannons allowing Inifinity to get close. If Didact wanted Infinity dead, and if they stayed and chased after him, it would probably make the priority list, the Infinity wouldn't be able to do much about it.

Also, biased poll is biased.

"Bs: Blame stosh for all of your BS!"

I don't like him because he disrespects the Chief almost irrationally like Silva did, but I understand his viewpoint. He wants to make sure he's in command and that rogue variables like MC/Cortana aren't ruining precautions made to ensure the survival of Infinity. Regardless, I thought it was hilarious when you knew the Chief could snap him like a twig and that no one would really care since he's the MC.

I'd never thought I'd see a game where the Chief would disobey a direct order by someone of higher rank than he is when Del Rio ordered the MC to hand over Cortana.

Not too mention that when Del Rio ordered for the Chief to be arrested I bet that Chief had had enough at the point and was thinking "Try it".
