What's that thing in the H3 trailer? Is it the Ark, like every one says? It clearly has Forerunner architecture. So was it made by the Forerunners, or the Covenant? Was non-human life on Earth before we were? How long ago was it made?
Well I geuss no one will no for sure, until the game comes out.

its the ark.

built for the forerunner to activate all the halos at once

seeing as how truth relied on tarters to activate 05 and kill off the majority of the covie, he is on his way to get rid of the rest of the life in the galaxy and have the prophets arise as the only species in the galaxy

One must look at it as a biblical reference.

The story of the ark is that it was used to protect Noah and two of every animal from the flood. They stayed inside the ark for forty days, and came out once the flood had ended.

I think that the Ark is what is used to protect those inside it from the Flood, as every other creature in the universe that can sustain the Flood is dead and therefore uninhabitable, leaving the Flood to die. Therefore, what the next question would be is "How long can a flood stay conscious without calcium to feed upon?"

But piecing this together is useless. It is a lost hope, in all honesty. You won't get far, unless you find that "Halo Bible" they're using for the movie.

I think it's possible the Forerunner could still exist. Methinks any surviving Forerunner is in cryo-freeze. Possibly on the Forerunner Ship(which I believe to be the Ark), the Ark(well, we don't know yet, do we?), or on Earth.

If not in cryo-freeze, then it could be possible the Forerunner is existent in another place in the universe or realm. Just like God resides in Heaven. Since the Prophets want to find the Forerunners' means of transcendence, it's likely the structure they found on Earth is a portal to the Great Journey. There's numerous references that the "Great Journey" is a pathway to "heaven" throughout Halo 2. Maybe the Prophets aren't completely lying, if they claim to have interpreted the Forerunner's inscriptions. Perhaps there is a way to reach the Forerunner's realm, at the cost of the former galaxy passing away through activation of Halo(strangely, I thought of this while watching Titanic, as the priest recites prayers on the sloping deck. "No pain, no sorrow, for the former world has passed away").

Humans have to be the forerunners, ot at least decendants of them. In H2 Mercy says to MC "Earth, to finish what we started. AND THIS TIME none of you will survive". So they tried to activate the Ark before, and kill the Forerunners (humans).
